Google Upgrades AMIE AI for Real-Time Video Consultations

Google has updated its AMIE medical AI system to handle real-time video consultations, marking a major step toward automated clinical diagnostics that can interpret visual and auditory cues.

Google Research and Google DeepMind have expanded the capabilities of their research medical AI system, AMIE, enabling it to conduct real-time clinical video consultations. Built on Google's Gemini models and Project Astra, the upgraded system utilizes a multi-agent architecture. This advanced setup allows the AI to process visual and auditory inputs dynamically, enabling it to guide virtual physical examinations and perform diagnostic reasoning on the fly.

To test the system, researchers conducted a randomized study involving simulated consultations. The trial paired the AI with patient actors and compared its performance against a group of primary care physicians. Clinical evaluators analyzed the interactions across several core competencies, including the thoroughness of history-taking, diagnostic accuracy, the appropriateness of recommended management plans, and overall communication quality.

The evaluators assessed AMIE favorably across these clinical metrics, noting its strong performance in simulated environments. Furthermore, the patient actors involved in the study reported a preference for the video-based consultation experience over traditional text-based chat interfaces. By observing physical cues like a patient's gait or visible signs of discomfort, the video-enabled AI mimics the holistic observation skills of human doctors.

Despite these promising results, Google emphasizes that AMIE remains strictly a research system. The company noted that further study and validation are required before the technology can be safely and responsibly deployed in real-world clinical settings. However, the demonstration highlights how multimodal AI architectures could eventually support healthcare providers by streamlining remote triage and virtual care, offering an exciting glimpse into the future of health AI.
