Brad Lightcap departs OpenAI after eight years

Brad Lightcap, who recently transitioned to leading special projects at OpenAI, has announced his departure from the artificial intelligence firm after an eight-year tenure. In an internal memo shared on the social media platform X, Lightcap indicated he is leaving to pursue a new venture. He noted that he plans to remain with the company for a few weeks to assist with the transition.

Lightcap's exit follows a series of shifts in his responsibilities over the past year and a half. In March 2025, his duties as chief operating officer expanded to encompass day-to-day operations, global deployment, and business strategy. By January 2026, he stepped back from leading enterprise product and engineering efforts, which were briefly assumed by Barret Zoph before Zoph departed five months later. In April, Lightcap officially vacated the COO position to head special projects reporting directly to CEO Sam Altman, with Chief Revenue Officer Denise Dresser taking over much of his previous portfolio.

His departure is part of a larger executive reshuffle at OpenAI. The company recently saw its artificial general intelligence chief, Fidji Simo, leave in July following a medical leave. Additionally, Chief Marketing Officer Kate Rouch stepped down in April due to health reasons.

These leadership changes coincide with a broader restructuring as OpenAI prepares for an initial public offering over the coming year. Company president Greg Brockman has taken charge of product development, and the organization is actively narrowing its focus to core revenue-generating initiatives rather than secondary projects.
