Anthropic Launches Free Claude Seats for Scientists
Anthropic has launched a program offering 10,000 free and discounted Claude Team seats to academic researchers, aiming to accelerate scientific discovery across multiple disciplines.
On August 27, 2026, Anthropic expanded its researcher-focused initiatives by opening 10,000 free and discounted Claude Team subscription seats for academic and nonprofit scientists. Under this new plan, standard seats are priced at $0 per month instead of the regular $20, while premium seats with five times the usage limits cost $15 per month instead of $100. These promotional rates are fixed for 12 months, with annual billing options of $0 for standard and $180 for premium seats. Principal investigators at accredited universities and nonprofit institutes can register groups of 1 to 25 seats, and Anthropic guarantees it will not train its models on user conversations or research data.
Beyond subscriptions, Anthropic is widening its AI for Science credit program beyond biology to fields like mathematics and computer science, offering up to $50,000 in credits for compute-heavy projects. The company highlighted Claude's scientific capabilities, noting that an unreleased research version of the model working in Claude Code raised a lower bound on the fraction of the Riemann zeta function's zeros satisfying the Riemann hypothesis from 41.6% to 67.2%. Additionally, Claude successfully designed protein binders for 14 out of 15 targets.
However, strict safety guardrails remain for life sciences practitioners. Researchers in biology and chemistry are restricted to Opus-class models, as Claude Fable models continue to block professional biology and drug development queries. This restriction follows an August 7, 2026, safeguards update warning that Fable 5 could assist malicious actors by outperforming experts on complex biological tasks. To address this, Anthropic is partnering with the U.S. government to build an access program for its Mythos-class models.
For practitioners, these offerings integrate with Claude Science, an AI workbench released in beta on June 30, 2026. This tool provides a coordinating agent with over 60 curated skills and connectors for genomics, proteomics, and cheminformatics. It generates auditable artifacts containing code and history, utilizes a reviewer agent to flag errors, and connects directly to local laptops, SSH clusters, or on-demand GPUs, giving researchers a highly specialized environment to run complex workflows.
