Databricks expands India footprint with 250M investment
Databricks is aggressively scaling its footprint in India through a $250 million investment and dedicated internship programs to establish the region as a primary engineering and AI talent hub.

Databricks is expanding its operational footprint in India, driven by a $250M+ investment and plans for a 50% workforce expansion. Since 2022, the company's overall footprint in India has grown +270%, supported by a +350% increase in leadership presence across all business units. The expansion is heavily concentrated in technical teams, where Engineering headcount has scaled by 14x, and Field Engineering & Professional Services (FE & PS) teams have expanded by +260%.
To build out its talent pipeline, Databricks appointed Clara Kurian as its first university recruiter for APJ. Operating out of Bengaluru, Kurian leads the company's inaugural structured India Intern Program, which currently features 51 interns. The program gives participants direct access to engineering leadership through speed mentoring sessions alongside social events. In parallel, the organization is deepening community integration by sponsoring Bengaluru Tech Week and hosting Bharat Bricks Hacks Hackathons across various IITs and IISc.
This expansion reflects a strategic transition from localized backend operations toward establishing India as a primary product development and technical leadership hub. For software developers and data engineers, this shift translates into direct involvement with core distributed infrastructure and applied AI development rather than peripheral maintenance tasks.
For early-career practitioners seeking entry into the AI and data ecosystem, the growing regional hub offers opportunities to assume substantial project scope early. Databricks emphasizes foundational technical competencies, problem-solving mindsets, and adaptability over specialized knowledge of specific frameworks, giving emerging engineers a platform to help build scaling systems alongside global leadership.
