On Thursday, users of OpenAI's ChatGPT, Anthropic's Claude, and xAI's Grok experienced sudden service disruptions as all three major platforms went offline around the same time. The simultaneous failures temporarily paralyzed AI-dependent workflows worldwide before the companies managed to restore services later in the day. It remains unclear whether the overlapping outages were connected or merely coincidental.

OpenAI's issues began around 11:00 AM ET, with the company's status page reporting "elevated errors across ChatGPT and Codex." The disruption blocked users from logging in, uploading files, and using features like voice mode, search, deep research, and image generation. This occurred just as OpenAI was teasing its new Astra model. Meanwhile, Anthropic's Claude chatbot, Claude Code, and its API suffered a partial outage due to what technical staff member CJ Avilla described as an infrastructure issue. Anthropic resolved its problems by approximately 12:15 PM ET.

At the same time, xAI's Grok experienced its own downtime starting at 9:30 AM ET across Android, iOS, and web platforms. Users attempting to prompt the chatbot on X received messages stating the model was overloaded. The company later resolved the issue, attributing the failure to an outage at its Memphis data center.

For developers and enterprise users, this multi-platform blackout serves as a stark reminder of the risks of relying on single-provider cloud APIs. When tools like Claude Code and the Claude API fail alongside ChatGPT, developers lose access to automated coding assistants and backend services simultaneously. To mitigate such vulnerabilities, practitioners may need to design redundant systems that can dynamically route queries across different model providers when primary services fail.
