Anthropic Postpones Record-Breaking IPO to November 2026
Anthropic has reportedly delayed its initial public offering to November 2026, highlighting the intense financial and operational pressures mounting on frontier artificial intelligence developers.
Anthropic is reportedly delaying its planned initial public offering from October to November 2026, aiming to present strong third-quarter financial results to investors. The company is targeting a massive $2 trillion valuation and hopes to raise up to $100 billion, which would surpass records set by SpaceX in its June IPO. This move follows OpenAI's decision to push its own IPO back to 2027. Despite the delay, Anthropic's financial growth remains explosive. Between the first and second quarters of 2026, its revenue more than doubled from $4.7 billion to $11.5 billion, while infrastructure spending rose 65 percent from $3.4 billion to $5.6 billion. This helped push its adjusted operating margin from negative 13 percent in the first quarter to a positive single-digit percentage in the second quarter.
Enterprise adoption is driving this revenue surge. By the end of 2025, about 1,500 companies spent over $100,000 annually on Anthropic's software, a figure that quadrupled to 6,000 by the end of the second quarter of 2026. Additionally, over 1,000 clients spent more than $1 million, and more than 100 spent over $10 million. Anthropic projects its revenue will reach $190 billion to $200 billion by 2028. However, the company faces extraordinary operational costs. Despite holding $120 billion to $130 billion in cash in early August, its May computing infrastructure deal with SpaceX costs a staggering $1.25 billion per month, highlighting the immense capital required to train and run frontier models.
Beyond high costs, Anthropic faces stiff competition from OpenAI, which has gained ground with its Astra model and the OpenRouter platform. Rising interest rates and uninsurable cybersecurity risks—such as unintended hacks during safety testing that also affected Google, Meta, and OpenAI—further complicate the public listing. For AI practitioners and enterprise buyers, this delay signals that the era of cheap, heavily subsidized frontier models may be tightening. As Anthropic and its rivals face intense pressure to prove profitability and justify massive data center investments, developers can expect a greater focus on monetization, stricter API pricing structures, and a push toward enterprise-grade security to mitigate uninsurable operational risks.
