Blue Voice raises $6M to guide police officers with AI

Blue Voice, co-founded by Harvard Law dropout David Lawrence, former Google engineer Amit Patankar, and retired Boston police deputy chief Michael Gropman, secured the seed round led by SignalFire and Las Olas VC. The Boston-based startup aims to replace cumbersome 15,000-page physical manuals and unreliable consumer AI tools. According to Lawrence, general-purpose models like ChatGPT hallucinate or provide incorrect answers up to 30% of the time, making them dangerous for law enforcement. Instead, Blue Voice trains its system on department-specific regulations, local ordinances, and protocols to deliver accurate, real-time guidance.

The platform has already gained significant traction, expanding its customer base elevenfold over the past year. Officers at 225 county agencies across 25 states now use the tool daily, with the system answering a query every minute. In addition to legal protocols, the mobile application provides officers with instant access to detailed school maps during active-shooter emergencies. The startup is also expanding its capabilities to help detectives solve cold cases, positioning itself as a direct competitor to private-equity-backed Lexipol.

For practitioners in the field, the tool acts as a decision-support system rather than an automated decision-maker. It points officers directly to original regulations rather than generating freeform answers. In one recent incident, a rookie officer used the app to confirm that a suspect's behavior met the legal criteria for child enticement, allowing him to intervene and prevent a potential kidnapping. In another case, the tool reminded a police chief that an officer could not return to active duty after a shooting without a third-party mental health evaluation. By providing immediate, cited legal boundaries, the startup aims to reduce operational errors and protect civil rights.
