Meta Tests Robots to Automate Data Center Maintenance

Meta is testing specialized robots to automate physical tasks inside its data centers, a move that could slash labor costs but has sparked anxiety among facility technicians.

Meta is actively piloting robotic systems from vendors like Watney Robotics, Kinova, and ABB to automate physical maintenance inside its massive infrastructure. At its Altoona, Iowa facility, which opened in 2014, the company has been testing a pair of dual-armed Watney robots for cabling work since last June. It is also evaluating Kinova's Gen3 robotic arm for power cycling servers, alongside a separate cable-swapping robot that one worker estimates could replace up to 80 percent of certain workloads. In New Albany, Ohio, at its Prometheus campus, Meta is deploying four-wheeled ABB robots equipped with scissor-lift risers and six-axis arms to reseat hardware parts.

These trials build on Meta's existing fleet of self-driving tugger robots that move server racks and wheeled inventory-tracking bots. However, these systems still face significant technical hurdles. The inventory robot, which also performs failure inspections, cannot distinguish between red and green indicator lights because its camera only captures grayscale. It also struggles to navigate corners and loose cables, requiring human operators to manually steer it between buildings. Furthermore, current robotic designs are completely unsuited for the complex cabling required by advanced hardware like Nvidia's GB300 supercomputer.

For data center practitioners, this shift signals a profound change in the nature of on-site work. While proponents argue that automation will free technicians from repetitive or dangerous tasks, some workers express concern that Meta's ultimate goal is to transition to a lower-paid, lower-skilled workforce acting as "smart hands" to execute AI-driven instructions. Although Meta contends its demand for skilled labor remains strong—pointing to a free training program it launched this year to prepare thousands of workers annually—the broader industry is moving in a similar direction. Microsoft, Google, and Amazon are all actively exploring or deploying robotics to handle tasks ranging from server recycling to replacing faulty hardware racks.
