Anthropic launches free Claude for Teachers platform

Anthropic is providing verified K-12 educators in the United States with complimentary access to the premium capabilities of its Claude model. To secure a full year of this free service, teachers must register by June 30, 2027. The platform integrates with Learning Commons to access academic standards across all 50 states, allowing educators to generate scaffolded lesson plans aligned with specific state requirements. It also incorporates trusted curricula such as OpenSciEd and Illustrative Mathematics' IM v.360.

The platform connects to a broad ecosystem of K-12 educational tools, including ASSISTments, Brisk Teaching, Canva Education, Coteach, Diffit, Eedi, MagicSchool, Snorkl, and TeachFX. Because the service includes Claude Code and Cowork, teachers can automate repetitive tasks. For instance, Claude can analyze de-identified exit tickets and adapt the next day's lesson plan automatically at 4:00 PM daily. It also allows teachers to upload folders of instructional materials to analyze overall classroom performance.

To address privacy concerns, Anthropic guarantees that it will not use conversations from verified teacher accounts to train its models, and the tool includes a FERPA-compliant data processing agreement. The company is collaborating with the American Federation of Teachers to establish safety guidelines, which union president Randi Weingarten described as a "Gold Standard" for K-12 education. Anthropic is piloting the platform in the Detroit Public Schools Community District and partnering with the Gates Foundation and Playlab. Additionally, the company launched a model-agnostic AI fluency course co-created with Teach For America.

Alongside the education platform, Anthropic announced a research preview of its Model Hardware Standard for physical devices. The company is giving 10,000 scientists free access to Claude, allowing verified principal investigators to add team members to Standard seats for free or Premium seats for $15 per month for up to a year. Anthropic is also launching a $5 million grant program to fund independent research into how AI affects human wellbeing.
