Meta's Muse App Beats ChatGPT's Early Mobile Growth
Meta's new Muse artificial intelligence app has surpassed ChatGPT's early mobile adoption metrics, signaling that Meta's massive social distribution network could dominate the consumer AI market.

Meta's latest artificial intelligence application, Muse, is experiencing a faster initial rollout than OpenAI's ChatGPT did during its mobile debut. According to new estimates from market intelligence firm Apptopia, Muse accumulated 2.8 million total global installations within its first 12 days of availability. To establish a fair comparison between the two launches, Apptopia analyzed iOS data specifically for the United States and Canada over each app's first 12 days. In this subset, Muse secured 1.8 million downloads, comfortably beating the 1.3 million downloads ChatGPT recorded during its equivalent launch window.
The engagement metrics tell a similar story. Apptopia reports that Muse has attracted 642,000 daily active users in the United States, compared to the 231,000 daily active users ChatGPT maintained at the same point in its lifecycle. Even when isolating the data to iOS users to account for ChatGPT's initial iOS-only release, Muse still led with 359,000 daily active users. This rapid adoption propelled Muse to the number one spot on the U.S. App Store, rising from its initial second-place position. Analytics firm Appfigures also noted that Muse quickly surpassed the 1 million download milestone shortly after launching.
This explosive growth highlights the power of Meta's cross-promotion ecosystem. While ChatGPT launched globally but exclusively on iOS, Meta released Muse on both iOS and Android, though restricted to the U.S. and Canada. Meta can leverage its massive existing user base across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp to drive adoption, mirroring the strategy that helped Threads reach over 500 million users. Apptopia's data shows that more than 95 percent of Muse users are also Facebook users, and 63 percent use Instagram, indicating a highly integrated audience.
For AI developers and industry practitioners, Muse's rapid ascent demonstrates that distribution and platform integration can be just as critical as underlying model capabilities. While OpenAI holds a strong brand advantage, Meta's ability to funnel billions of existing social media users directly into its AI ecosystem poses a formidable challenge to independent AI applications. Practitioners must recognize that consumer AI adoption is increasingly driven by convenience and pre-existing platform loyalty rather than standalone technological superiority.
