AWS Integrates OpenAI GPT-5.6 Into Kiro Dev Tool
Amazon Web Services has integrated OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 model family into its Kiro development environment, a move that joint testing shows can slash the cost of coding tasks by 82 percent.

This efficiency stems from Kiro's structured workflow, which translates high-level user intent into technical designs, requirements, and task lists before the model begins generating code, preventing wasted tokens.
While the 82% savings figure highlights cost efficiency, the companies did not disclose any changes in coding accuracy under this setup. For context, OpenAI's baseline evaluations on Terminal-Bench 2.1 place Terra at 87.4% accuracy, Sol at 88.8%, and the older GPT-5.5 at 85.6%. This integration also leverages recent price drops. At its July 9, 2026 launch, Terra cost $2.50 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens, while Sol was priced at $5 and $30, and Luna at $1 and $6. However, on July 30, 2026, OpenAI slashed Luna's price by 80% and Terra's by 20%, followed by a temporary three-month cut of over 20% for Sol on August 21, 2026.
For developers, this update injects frontier-class models into a structured, Code OSS-based environment that preserves VS Code settings and plugins. Instead of relying on raw prompts, practitioners can use Kiro to generate formal acceptance criteria and data-flow diagrams, executing multi-step coding tasks with automated testing running in the background. Following a $38 billion compute deal in November 2025, the companies expanded their partnership on February 27, 2026, with a $100 billion, eight-year agreement. That deal includes a $50 billion investment from Amazon, a commitment from OpenAI to use 2 gigawatts of Trainium capacity, and AWS serving as the exclusive third-party cloud distributor for OpenAI's Frontier enterprise platform.
