OpenAI forms math advisory group after AI breakthroughs

OpenAI announced the creation of the Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence, an independent body hosted at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. This move follows a series of startling mathematical achievements by an internal OpenAI model, which recently published a solution to the famous Navier-Stokes Millennium Prize problem and resolved over 100 other open mathematical problems across various fields.

The rapid pace of these AI-driven discoveries has alarmed the academic community. Recently, 25 Fields Medal-winning mathematicians signed an open letter warning that aggressive competition among AI labs poses a threat to their intellectual discipline. Despite its prestigious backing, the advisory group has strict limits on its influence.
