OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Mil for Department of War

On August 31, 2026, the Department of War officially deployed ChatGPT Mil, a customized version of OpenAI's chatbot, on its GenAI.mil enterprise platform. Accredited for Controlled Unclassified Information at Impact Level 5, the system is designed to support more than 3 million Department personnel. The tool focuses on chat, files, projects, and custom GPTs to assist with document-heavy, unclassified tasks such as planning, policy, logistics, and administration. By automating these routine workflows, the deployment aims to free up time for critical projects across the Joint Force.

To address security concerns, the system runs on authorized government cloud infrastructure. OpenAI ensures that all data processed on GenAI.mil remains isolated within the government environment and is never used to train its public or commercial models. Furthermore, the partnership includes strict contractual guardrails. The technology cannot be used for mass domestic surveillance of U.S. persons, high-stakes automated decisions, or directing autonomous weapons systems. Additionally, Department intelligence agencies like the NSA are barred from using these services without a separate agreement.

This deployment marks the next phase of GenAI.mil, which launched on December 9, 2025, with Google Cloud's Gemini for Government. At launch, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth declared that the department was "pushing all of our chips in on artificial intelligence" to bolster the force. The platform has grown rapidly, surpassing 1 million unique users within two months and reaching 1.3 million users within five months, generating tens of millions of prompts and hundreds of thousands of agents. The Department also contracted with xAI on December 22, 2025, to integrate Grok models.

For defense practitioners, the integration establishes a robust multi-model ecosystem. While ChatGPT Mil handles unclassified tasks at Impact Level 5, the Department is also expanding its AI reach. It has secured agreements with eight frontier AI companies—SpaceX, OpenAI, Google, NVIDIA, Reflection, Microsoft, Amazon Web Services, and Oracle—to deploy capabilities on classified networks at Impact Levels 6 and 7. This dual-track approach allows personnel to leverage advanced generative models safely across both administrative and tactical operations.
