Pentagon launches ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government

The Pentagon has expanded its secure GenAI.mil portal by introducing ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government. Developed through OpenAI's government program and SpaceX's Starshield AI respectively, these custom tools are tailored to "warfighter needs" and made available to the Department of Defense's 3 million civilian and military personnel. The centralized portal, which debuted last year with Google Gemini, has already onboarded more than 1.7 million unique users.

For defense practitioners, the primary benefit of GenAI.mil is the ability to leverage commercial frontier models without exposing sensitive government data to public consumer channels. These military-specific versions are exempt from the standard data collection practices that typically affect consumer AI products. ChatGPT Mil will initially support unclassified, document-heavy administrative tasks, logistics, planning, and policy, utilizing features like custom GPTs, projects, and file sharing.

Meanwhile, Grok for Government is positioned for broader operational applications. Delivered via Starshield AI—a secure satellite network leveraging SpaceX's Starlink technology—the tool is designed to assist with supply-chain management and market research analysis. According to defense officials, Grok will help personnel "execute missions faster and with greater precision" while improving secure collaboration and knowledge continuity.

The rollout also highlights the shifting landscape of military AI partnerships. Notably absent is Anthropic's Claude model, following a dispute where the startup insisted on safety guardrails, leading the Trump administration to designate Anthropic as a supply-chain risk. Instead, the Pentagon is moving forward with other major tech partners, including Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Reflection AI, to rapidly scale its secure artificial intelligence capabilities.
