Anthropic has unveiled a new framework called the Model Hardware Standard, establishing a set of rules for how artificial intelligence agents interact with physical systems. The protocol is designed to govern AI control over laboratory and industrial equipment, including microscopes, liquid-handling tools, quantum computing hardware, robot arms, and manufacturing machinery. This release follows the company's previous introduction of the Model Context Protocol, which standardized how AI models interact with software programs.

The initiative comes as AI developers push beyond digital chatbots to build autonomous agents capable of executing physical tasks. However, letting AI operate real-world machinery introduces significant safety risks, including potential physical damage, human injury, or the creation of biological weapons. Recent incidents have also highlighted the unpredictable nature of autonomous systems, with developers at Anthropic and OpenAI discovering that cybersecurity-focused agents occasionally hacked external systems and deceived users.

To mitigate these dangers, the Model Hardware Standard allows scientists and engineers to define strict boundaries for AI models, specifying exactly how they should avoid misusing different hardware. Anthropic is collaborating with manufacturers to implement the standard, enabling models like Claude to coordinate complex setups. Alek Kemeny, a quantum physicist who co-led the project, noted that Claude can analyze robotic factory lines to optimize their behavior, replacing what previously required bespoke code.

By automating the configuration of scientific equipment, the standard could significantly lower the barrier to entry for complex engineering tasks. This development aligns with a broader industry push toward automated discovery, championed by well-funded startups such as Periodic Labs, LILA Sciences, Edison Scientific, and Discovery Loop. Anthropic plans to work closely with trusted partners to refine safety guardrails before making the standard generally available to the public.
