Former Andreessen Horowitz general partner Vijay Pande has partnered with long-time investor Zach Werner to launch VZVC, a highly concentrated venture capital firm. After spending over a decade building a16z's healthcare practice into a nearly $4 billion powerhouse, Pande left the firm last June to pursue a leaner investment model. Instead of chasing dozens of deals, VZVC plans to make only about five highly selective investments per year. Remarkably, the firm employs no associates, choosing instead to run its day-to-day operations using custom-built AI agents.

VZVC is targeting two primary sectors: AI for healthcare delivery and AI for clinical trials. Pande notes that bringing a drug from its first clinical trial to the end of its third trial carries a mere 20% success rate, with failures often costing hundreds of millions of dollars. Because traditional animal models like mice fail to accurately predict human outcomes, Pande believes AI models will bridge this gap. By improving predictive accuracy, AI can significantly lower the amortized costs of drug development and pave the way for personalized precision medicine.

For AI practitioners in biotech, the landscape presents unique hurdles. Unlike text-based LLMs, biological data cannot simply be scraped from the internet, forcing startups to build proprietary, walled-off datasets. However, Pande foresees a shift toward open-source biological foundation models, which he describes as "atlases of biological information" that could democratize access much like open-source LLMs have in enterprise tech. He advises founders, including those at his affiliated startups Genesis Therapeutics and Insitro, to focus heavily on go-to-market strategies, which he warns can be even more challenging than developing the underlying science.
