If you need some recommendations, our picks include an action comedy, a gritty crime thriller, and an action flick with a WWE superstar.

We also have guides to the best new movies to stream, the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on Maxand the best movies on Disney+.

    Kindergarten Cop (1990)

A man holds a gun and looks back.
    Universal Pictures

Two action stars dominated the 1980s: Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger. What set the latter apart from the former was comedy. Schwarzenegger’s superior comedic timing allowed him to thrive in humorous roles. While Kindgarten Cop isn’t a laugh-out-loud comedy, it perfectly utilizes Schwarzenegger’s brains with his brawn.

Tough guy cop John Kimble (Schwarzenegger) has taken down drug dealers and murderers, but nothing could have ever prepared him for screaming children. Kimble travels to Oregon and poses as a kindergarten teacher to get closer to the wife of a drug lord, Cullen Crisp (Richard Tyson), and convince her to testify in court. Kimble falls flat on his face in his first go-around. However, a little discipline and a trusty whistle will help Kimble get these kids into shape.

    Den of Thieves (2018)

Gerard Butler sits down and holds up a police badge in Den of Thieves.
    STXfilms

With Den of Thieves 2: Pantera becoming the No. 1 movie on Netflix, revisit how Big Nick O’Brien (Gerard Butler) and Donnie Wilson (O’Shea Jackson Jr.) came to be enemies in the first movie. In one corner stands Big Nick, the outlaw cop who leads the Regulators, the major crimes unit that bends the rules to put the bad guys behind bars.

In the other corner stands Ray Merrimen (Pablo Schreiber), a recently paroled Marine who pulls off successful heists with his crew. Merrimen has his eyes on the Federal Reserve. Big Nick is hot on his trail. Something has to give for these two alphas. Let’s just say neither side will go out peacefully. Grab your guns and get ready for a shootout.

    12 Rounds (2009)

John Cena holds a gun and looks back.
    20th Century Fox

Thanks to Peacemaker, Hollywood now realizes what many wrestling fans have known for 15 years: John Cena can act. Cena is not Laurence Olivier, but he has the physicality of an action star and the improvisation of a comedian. Let’s stick with physicality and his performance in the underrated 12 Rounds, which follows the formula of Die Hard with a Vengeance.

Detective Danny Fisher (John Cena) successfully puts Miles Jackson (Aidan Gillen) behind bars. However, Miles’ girlfriend dies before the arrest, and the criminal promises to exact revenge against Fisher. One year later, Miles escapes prison and kidnaps Fisher’s girlfriend, Molly (Ashley Scott). To prevent her death, Danny must participate in a game of 12 rounds: complete each task, and Molly lives. Fail a task, and she dies. Let the (impossible) games begin.

  • 3 underrated Netflix shows you should watch this weekend (March 28-30)

Netflix is a great wellspring of interesting shows, but for every great show available on the streaming service, there’s at least one that you’ll watch one and a half episodes of then forget about completely. Sorting through which shows are worth your time can be a challenge, especially when Netflix is determined to keep making more stuff.

That’s why we’ve pulled together three excellent shows that are well worth checking out this weekend. One is a longer entry, and the other two are shows you could get through in a single weekend.

We also have guides to the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on Max, and the best movies on Disney+.

    Younger (2015-2021)

Younger is the kind of long-running, low-stakes rom-com TV series that we rarely get anymore. The show stars Sutton Foster as a single mom who is trying to start up a career at the age of 40.

When she discovers that the best way for her to get a job as an assistant is to lie about her age, she enters an entirely new life in which everyone around her thinks she’s much younger than she really is. Along the way, she finds herself torn between two men and has to slowly reveal that she’s been living a lie to everyone around her. It’s silly, funny, and most importantly, shot on location in New York City.

You can watch Younger on Netflix.

    Adolescence (2025)

If you haven’t made time for Adolescence yet, this show should be at the top of your list. Told in just four episodes, the series follows a family in the aftermath of their son being accused of murdering a classmate. Each episode is a single take, and every installment takes a slightly different angle on the central investigation into whether this young man is guilty and why he may have committed the crime.

Along the way, we come to understand the way rage, misogyny, and a life lived online came to influence this young man and convince him of the drastic action he had to take. It’s one of the best dramas Netflix has ever produced.

You can watch Adolescence on Netflix.

    Escape at Dannemora (2018)

Before Ben Stiller was directing some of the best TV on the air with Severance, he directed the entirety of Escape at Dannemora. The series, which is based on a true story, tells the story of two inmates at a maximum security prison in a sleepy town who find themselves entangled in the life of a married corrections officer.

As she becomes romantically involved with both of them, she ultimately aids in their escape from prison, leading to a riveting, tense episode as they try to get away clean. Patricia Arquette, Benicio del Toro, and Paul Dano are all incredible in their central roles.

You can watch Escape at Dannemora on Netflix.

  • 3 underrated (HBO) Max movies you should watch this weekend (March 28-30)

With a new month approaching, Max will add several 2024 releases to its library. The first is Y2K, Kyle Money’s disaster comedy starring Rachel Zegler. Y2K begins streaming on April 4. Later on, Babygirl, an erotic thriller with Nicole Kidman and Harris Dickinson, arrives on April 25.

Both movies should enter the service’s top 10 chart upon their debuts. Beyond the top 10, many underrated movies are ready to stream. If you’re willing to try something else, stream one of these three undervalued movies, including a 1980s teen comedy, a Tony Scott thriller, and a comedic slasher.

We also have guides to the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on Maxand the best movies on Disney+.

    Teen Wolf (1985)

Michael J. Fox in Teen Wolf.
    Atlantic Releasing Corporation

Michael J. Fox is an actor synonymous with the 1980s. The Canadian actor’s stardom was gigantic, thanks to a hit movie, Back to the Future, and a beloved sitcom, Family Ties. Snuck in the middle of those two projects was Teen Wolf, Rod Daniel’s coming-of-age comedy with a werewolf. When high school loser Scott Howard (Michael J. Fox) begins experiencing some bodily changes, his father, Harold (James Hampton), informs him that a werewolf curse runs in the family.

Much to his surprise, Scott’s classmates love “The Wolf,” so he remains as the creature most of the time. However, Scott soon realizes that his newfound friends have no interest in anything besides the wolf. Teen Wolf is a fun 1980s classic with some laughs, a good message, and the worst display of basketball you’ll ever watch. It’s a must-watch.

    Stream Teen Wolf on Max.

    Unstoppable (2010)

Chris Pine and Denzel Washington in Unstoppable.
    20th Century Studios

Tony Scott and action were like baseball and apple pie. Scott mastered the art of the popcorn thriller thanks to his frenetic pacing, vibrant colors, movie star casts, and breakneck action sequences. Unstoppable, Scott’s last movie before his tragic death, is a shining example of how Scott’s directorial prowess elevates a movie.

Scott’s best muse, Denzel Washington, stars as Frank Barnes, a veteran engineer forced to work with rookie conductor Will Colson (Chris Pine). What starts as an ordinary day turns into a matter of life or death when a train carrying toxic chemicals comes flying down their track. Refusing to follow orders, Frank and Will take matters into their own hands and attempt to stop the train from crashing and causing a catastrophic disaster. A suspenseful thriller with great action, like Unstoppable, is a hell of a movie to have as the entry on a resume.

    Stream Unstoppable on Max.

    Scream 3 (2000)

The cast of Scream 3 in a poster for the movie.
    Dimension Films

Scream is a masterpiece. Scream 2 is good. Scream 3 is slept on. Am I going to sit here and say Scream 3 is the best of the Scream movies? I am not. I will say that Scream 3 is a ton of fun and fully embraces the meta aspect of the script. In Scream 3, Ghostface heads to Hollywood for Stab 3: Return to Woodsboro.

On the set of Stab 3, Ghostface begins killing several actors. Ghostface even manages to find the location of Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), who has been living in seclusion. Realizing she’s in danger, Sidney heads to Hollywood and reunites with Dewey Riley (David Arquette) and Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) to end Ghostface’s terror. At least that’s what they’re going to try to do.

  • 3 great Hulu movies you need to stream this weekend (March 28- 30)

Earlier this month, Hulu had the good fortune to add Anora to its lineup just a few weeks after it won Best Picture at the Oscars. This week, Hulu is adding another one of last year’s Best Picture nominees, A Complete Unknown. Naturally, it’s our top pick for the three great Hulu movies you need to stream this weekend.

Our two remaining picks for the last weekend in March are a college drama and one of Jim Carrey’s best movies. Any or all of these films are a great way to close out the month from the comfort of your own home.

Need more recommendations? We also have guides to the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on Max, and the best movies on Disney+.

    A Complete Unknown (2024)

Timothée Chalamet and Elle Fanning in A Complete Unknown.
    Searchlight Pictures

Timothée Chalamet and Ed Norton both received Oscar nominations for their respective performances as Bob Dylan and Pete Seeger in A Complete Unknown. Norton has a large supporting role, but this is Chalamet’s movie from start to finish. And if Chalamet had won Best Actor at the Academy Awards, it would have been well-deserved.

The film captures a period in time in Dylan’s life when he managed to break into the folk music scene. He also found romance with Sylvie Russo (Elle Fanning) while sharing undeniable chemistry with Joan Baez (Monica Barbaro), a music legend in her own right. Regardless, Dylan is moved to find his own path in the industry, rather than following someone else’s example. That’s going to lead to some bruised egos and broken relationships along the way.

Watch A Complete Unknown on Hulu.

    The Line (2023)

    The cast of The Line.
    Utopia

The Line is all about college students with no concept of boundaries or the consequences of their own actions. Even after being warned by the dean, the guys of Kappa Nu Alpha gleefully flout the rules that were supposedly meant to keep them in check. Sophomore Tom Backster (Alex Wolff) even seems to be in line to be the next leader of the frat, especially since his rich friend, Mitch Miller (Bo Mitchell), supports him.

Eventually, Mitch pushes things too far during a hazing ritual, and suddenly the stakes are very real for Tom and the others who took part in the incident. That forces Tom to decide where his true loyalties lie, and how far he’s willing to go to escape the blame for something that could bring down the entire frat.

    Watch The Line on Hulu.

    The Truman Show (1998)

Jim Carrey in "The Truman Show."
    Paramount Pictures / Paramount Pictures

Truman Burbank (Jim Carrey) is the biggest star in the world; he just doesn’t know it. And if the director, Christof (Ed Harris), has his way, Truman will never find out. In the world of the film, The Truman Show is a reality series that has chronicled every moment of Truman’s life. He’s the only one who isn’t aware that everyone around him is an actor, including his made-for-TV wife, Meryl (Laura Linney).

A massive dome was constructed to keep Truman and his small town separated from the outside world. But when too many inexplicable things happen, Truman questions his reality and starts looking for a way out.

  • 3 underrated Amazon Prime Video movies you should watch this weekend (March 28-30)

Streaming services mean that most of us have more access to entertainment than we ever would have just 10 years ago. Unfortunately, no streaming service has totally figured out the best way to showcase all the stuff that they have on offer.

Amazon Prime Video has plenty of great movies, but unless it’s recommended by the algorithm, you might not even be aware it exists. That’s why we’ve pulled together this list of three underrated titles you should make time for on the streaming service.

Need more recommendations? Then check out the best new movies to stream this week, as well as the best shows on Netflix, the best shows on Hulu, the best shows on Amazon Prime Video, and the best shows on Disney+.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning (2023)

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One | Official Trailer (2023 Movie) – Tom Cruise

The Mission: Impossible saga is not exactly unknown, but Dead Reckoning is one of its more underrated chapters. This entry, which follows Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt as he comes face to face with an AI known as The Entity that can anticipate his every move. While Mission: Impossible is not the first franchise to introduce an AI villain, it does feel like a timely antagonist.

What’s more important, though, is that Dead Reckoning is filled to the brim with some of the best set pieces you’ll ever see in a major Hollywood movie. From a car chase through Rome to a climactic train crash, it will keep you on the edge of your seat, and that’s what these movies are made for.

You can watch Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning on Prime Video.

    Thirteen Lives (2022)

Thirteen Lives Trailer #1 (2022) | Movieclips Trailers

Ron Howard is one of the ultimate Hollywood guns for hire, meaning his movies can range from amazing to terrible. Thirteen Lives, the story of the team assembled to rescue the soccer team trapped in a cave in Thailand, is one of his better recent efforts.

The movie is ultimately a tribute to people who do their jobs well and features an all-star cast, including Colin Farrell, Viggo Mortensen, and Joel Edgerton. The movie has some thrilling sequences, including the actual rescue itself. Howard is the capable hand that manages to guide this complex story.

You can watch Thirteen Lives on Prime Video.

    Limitless (2011)

Limitless (2011) Official Trailer #1 – Bradley Cooper Movie

It’s not a perfect movie, but Limitless is exactly the kind of story we need more of today. Starring a young Bradley Cooper in “prove it” mode, Limitless follows a down-on-his-luck man who is introduced to a pill that can expand the capabilities of his mind. As he rises to the top of the financial world, he faces a dwindling supply of his drug and begins to worry that his new life will disappear.

The movie wouldn’t work without Cooper’s captivating central performance, but Limitless‘s mid-budget thrills feel refreshingly low-stakes by the standards of modern blockbusters.

You can watch Limitless on Prime Video.

  • 5 movies leaving Hulu in March 2025 you have to watch

For Hulu subscribers, it’s a good thing that only a trickle of movies are leaving at the end of March. In fact, there are literally only three movies exiting Hulu on March 31. Of that trio, we can only recommend Night Raiders and Snakehead.

That’s why we’ve had to dip into the movies leaving Hulu in April to fill out the rest of the five movies you need to watch before the end of March. We’ll be borrowing from May’s departures as well, because only nine movies are slated to exit Hulu in the entire month of April. And most of those flicks probably won’t even be remembered after they’re gone.

Need more recommendations? We also have guides to the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on Maxand the best movies on Disney+.

    Night Raiders (2021)

    Elle-Maija Tailfeathers in Night Raiders.
    Samuel Goldwyn Films

What happened to Niska has happened to parents all over North America, and some of them are planning a daring raid to reclaim their children. Niska may get a second chance with her daughter, but it’s going to take some serious sacrifices to bring them face-to-face once again.

    Watch Night Raiders on Hulu.

    Snakehead (2021)

    The cast of Snakehead.
    Samuel Goldwyn Films

There’s a lot of bang for the buck in Snakehead, a crime action thriller starring Shuya Chang. This is an immigrant story, but not in the way you might expect. Sister Tse (Shuya Chang) didn’t have herself smuggled into America to start a new life; she came to find her daughter, Rosie (Catherine Jiang), who was adopted by an American family while Tse was in prison.

Tse’s fighting skills make her too valuable to waste on prostitution, and she becomes a top enforcer for Dai Mah (Jade Wu), the woman who controls whether Tse will ever have her freedom again. Physically, Tse can hold her own with almost anyone. But she’s made an enemy out of Dai Mah’s son, Rambo (Sung Kang), who believes she’s trying to take his place as the heir apparent.

    Watch Snakehead on Hulu.

    Agnes (2021)

    The cast of Agnes.
    Magnet Releasing

Agnes is a horror film that makes a few creative choices that may not work for every viewer. Agnes (Hayley McFarland) herself is the apparent victim of a demonic possession, but Father Donaghue (Ben Hall) doesn’t really believe in things like that. Nevertheless, Donaghue and his assistant, Benjamin (Jake Horowitz), are dispatched to deal with the escalating crisis at the convent.

Molly C. Quinn gets top billing because a good deal of the story revolves around her character, Mary. Before the incident with Agnes, she was close friends with Mary. In the present, Mary seemingly wants nothing to do with the church or the people who were a part of her life there. As much trouble as Mary has finding her place outside of the church, something she knows is keeping her as far away as possible.

    Watch Agnes on Hulu.

    She Will (2021)

Alice Krige stares at her reflection in She Will.
    Vertigo Releasing

Alice Krige ventures into the realm of psychological horror in She Will, as her character, Veronica Ghent, enters a waking nightmare. Already weakened by a double mastectomy, Veronica’s hope of finding a safe space to heal alongside her nurse, Desi Hatoum (Kota Eberhardt), is shattered by the presence of people who know she was a movie star. Veronica is also unnerved by the reemergence of Hawthbourne (Malcolm McDowell), the man who discovered Veronica when she was 13.

Hawthbourne completely gaslights Veronica about the wildly inappropriate relationship they had at the time. But there’s something about the retreat’s location that’s awakening an aspect of Veronica that she didn’t know she had. And despite Desi’s desire to leave, Veronica may finally have the chance to get justice from the man who wronged her decades ago.

    Watch She Will on Hulu.

  • 5 movies leaving Netflix in March 2025 you have to watch now

March has been a solid month for new additions on Netflix. Despite the poor reviews, the latest movie from the Russo Brothers, The Electric State, is one of the most popular movies on the streamer. Meanwhile, heist fans will appreciate Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, the action-packed sequel starring Gerard Butler and O’Shea Jackson Jr.

While those two movies will remain on Netflix for the foreseeable future, a select group won’t be on the service much longer. From now until the end of March, try watching one of these five movies before they leave the service for good. Our picks include a heist comedy, a sci-fi thriller, and a Nolan masterpiece.

Lily James and Ansel Elgort in Baby Driver
    Sony Pictures

The titular character in Baby Driver might be one of Wright’s coolest characters. Baby (Ansel Elgort) loves two things: music and cars. Baby works as a getaway driver for Doc (Kevin Spacey), the mastermind behind the heists.

Because he suffers from tinnitus, Baby is constantly listening to music. Baby’s outlook on life changes when he meets a kind waitress, Debora (Lily James). Elysium (2013)

    Matt Damon looks scared.
    Sony Pictures Releasing

Matt Damon apparently fell in love with sci-fi in the 2010s. From 2010 through 2016, Damon starred in The Adjustment BureauContagionInterstellar, The Martian, and The Great Wall, and the movie featured on this list, Elysium. In 2154, humanity is divided into two sections. The poor, sick, and malnourished citizens live on Earth. Meanwhile, the wealthy live on Elysium, a luxurious space station orbiting above Earth.

After being exposed to radiation, factory worker Max Da Costa (Damon) is only given five days to live. His only hope for survival is to get to Elysium to use a med-bay, a device that cures people of disease. It won’t be easy getting to Elysium. If there’s anything the wealthy want more than anything, it’s to keep their advantage over the poor. Let the battle begin.

    Interstellar (2014)

    Interstellar-2014-Paramount-Pictures.jpg
    Paramount Pictures

To the stars, we go. In Interstellar, Christopher Nolan asks: What if mankind was never meant to die on Earth? In a dystopian future, crop blights and dust storms have humanity on the verge of extinction. Cooper (Matthew McConaughey), a former pilot turned farmer, is recruited by NASA to lead an expedition to a wormhole off Saturn.

Joining Cooper on this mission are Brand (Anne Hathaway), Romilly (David Gyasi), and Doyle (Wes Bentley). The scientists hope to find a habitable planet on the other side of the wormhole. The catch: Cooper does not know when he will return to Earth and reunite with his family. Backed by an inquisitive script and mesmerizing visuals, Interstellar is a sci-fi spectacle with much to say about personal relationships, resulting in Nolan’s most personal film.

    It (2017)

Pennywise the clown holds a red balloon.
    Brooke Palmer / Warner Bros.

Tim Curry gave kids nightmares for 27 years after portraying Pennywise the Clown in 1990’s It, the television adaptation of Stephen King’s 1986 novel. Curry received some company in the nightmare department thanks to Bill Skarsgård, who gave his terrifying interpretation of the clown in Andy Muschietti’s It. Like the novel and miniseries, the movie heads to Derry, Maine, where Pennywise the Dancing Clown begins terrorizing kids, including Georgie Denbrough (Jackson Robert Scott).

Georgie’s older brother, Bill (Jaeden Lieberher), sets out to find Georgie, believing he might still be alive. Bill and his fellow “Losers” — a club of social outcasts — learn that Georgie and the rest of Derry are being stalked by “It,” the murderous clown who feeds on fear. To stop Pennywise, the Losers must face their inner demons head-on. Easier said than done, considering a murderous clown stands in their way.

    Stream It on Netflix.

    Love Actually (2003)

Liam Neeson and Thomas Brodie-Sangster as Dnaiel and Sam talking in Love Actually.
    Universal Pictures

No rule states that Love Actually is reserved for the Christmas season. Is watching this rom-com in March a little aggressive? Yes, but it’s leaving Netflix, so why not get in a little Christmas spirit? Truth be told, the internet has criticized Love Actually too much. It’s gone from a Christmas classic to a terrible rom-com in the span of a few years.

Are there some creepy parts? Yes. The cue card storyline is still bizarre, albeit iconic. The going to America storyline is unnecessary but harmless. Don’t even get me started on the sex scene stand-ins. Despite these critiques, Emma Thompson listening to Both Sides Now by Joni Mitchell is still legendary. Liam Neeson helping his stepson impress his crush remains heartfelt. Hugh Grant finding romance behind the curtains is charming. But Billy Mack (Bill Nighy), realizing the best relationship in his life is with his manager (Gregor Fisher), still rules.

  • 5 movies leaving Amazon Prime Video in March 2025 you have to watch

Will Smith and Gene Hackman look at one another, a bright white scene in the background in Enemy of the State.
    Buena Vista Pictures Distribution

Every month, movies come and go on Amazon Prime Video. You might find something you want to watch one month only to realize that it’s already gone the next. This isn’t to say that every movie has a 30-day shelf life. Many movies on Amazon Prime Video are available for much longer, sometimes years. But how do you know? You don’t, unless you check for warnings that a movie is leaving soon (which aren’t always there). That’s a lot of work. So let us do it for you.

With this selection of five movies leaving Amazon Prime Video in March 2025, we’re highlighting several fantastic films worth watching before they’re gone. One is a great movie to watch if you want to honor the late, great Gene Hackman; it’s one of his best films from the late ’90s.

Need more recommendations? Then check out the best new movies to stream this week, the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on Max, and the best movies on Disney+.

    Enemy of the State (1998)

Sadly, we lost Gene Hackman this year, one of the greatest actors of our time. Relive one of his many great movies, Enemy of the State, in which he stars alongside Will Smith. Hackman is Edward “Brill” Lyle, a talented surveillance expert who frequently works with labor lawyer Robert Clayton Dean (Smith). When Dean finds himself in hot water while working a case against a mob boss that involves the NSA and threatens citizens, he reaches out to Brill for help.

The chemistry between Hackman and Smith is solid in Enemy of the State. The movie was a box office success and earned positive reviews, with critics lauding its writing, direction, and the talented lead cast. If you’re looking for a good Hackman film to remember his fantastic film legacy, this one is a good choice before it’s gone from the streamer.

Stream Enemy of the State on Amazon Prime Video.

    Rampage (2018)

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson might be making appearances in WWE right now, but he’s still one of the biggest action movie stars with an impressive resume of films, including this one. A sci-fi monster movie, Rampage is about a pathogen that escapes from a space station and makes its way to George (motion captured by Jason Liles), a rare gorilla who grows larger and more menacing. His human friend Davis (Johnson), a former Special Forces soldier who saved George from poachers, must now work with doctor Kate Caldwell (Naomie Harris), who originally developed the pathogen, to try and save George from government capture.

While Rampage received mixed reviews, it was a box-office success. Classify this one as a popcorn flick to watch on a lazy night at home when you just want to turn your brain off and be entertained with stunning visuals and thrilling action sequences.

Stream Rampage on Amazon Prime Video.

    Escape From New York (1981)

Escape From New York Official Trailer #1 (1981) Kurt Russell, John Carpenter HD

Travel back to the 1980s with Escape From New York, a John Carpenter independent sci-fi action movie starring Kurt Russell. It’s about an alternate future of 1997 (yes, in this movie, almost 20 years ago was considered the “near future”) where the U.S. has been overrun with crime and Manhattan has become a massive prison. Snake Plisskin (Russell) is a former Special Forces operative who has been incarcerated. But now, the government needs his help to save the president’s life following an attack by insurgents. If he can achieve this in 24 hours, he’ll be pardoned.

Escape From New York is a tense ride through 90-minute runtime. Now considered a cult classic, the movie spawned the sequel Escape from L.A. 15 years later, in which Russell reprised his role and Carpenter returned to write and direct.

    Heat (1995)

While Al Pacino and Robert De Niro have appeared in many movies together, Heat was their first major on-screen collaboration. The film adds Tom Sizemore, Jon Voight, and Val Kilmer to the cast to make this epic crime a must-watch. As far as cat-and-mouse, good-guy-and-bad-guy chase movies go, this one’s near the top of the list. Pacino is Vincent Hanna, an LAPD officer hunting down career thief Neil McCauley (De Niro). While it’s all part of the job, this isn’t a task either man can leave at the office. The obsession starts to impact their personal lives, too.

Based on the story of Chuck Adamson and his attempts to take down the real-life criminal of the same name, Heat is one of the best movies ever made in its genre. It proved that Pacino and De Niro were a movie match made in heaven.

    The Devil Wears Prada (2006)

Meryl Streep is deliciously haughty as the now iconic Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada, editor-in-chief of the fictional Runway magazine. She’s all about the high life, intricate fashion, and making an impression. Plus, her glare can break glass. When aspiring journalist Andrea “Andy” Sachs (Anne Hathaway) seeks a job there right out of university, she becomes a fish out of water. It’s a stepping-stone job, she believes, into real journalism. However, Andy finds herself becoming more like the materialistic and superficial woman she works with, losing a bit of herself each day in the process.

The Devil Wears Prada earned plenty of awards and accolades, and both Streep and Hathaway were praised for their performances, along with Emily Blunt as Miranda’s senior assistant Emily. It’s widely believed that the character of Miranda is inspired by Vogue’s Anna Wintour, though never officially confirmed. Either way, Streep nails it. Even with her incredible resume, this role remains one of Streep’s most memorable.

    Miramax Films

When Professor Gerald Lambeau (Stellan Skarsgard) discovers Will’s genius, he wants to mentor the troublesome boy.

To avoid jail time, Will agrees to mandated therapy sessions with Professor Lambeau’s old friend, Sean Maguire (Robin Williams). Elevation (2024)

A man holds and poins a gun as a woman looks behind him.
    Vertical

Captain America: Brave New World and Elevation showcase the duality of Anthony Mackie. The former is a Marvel tentpole, while the latter is a small genre flick. Your taste may vary on both. However, this article will focus on Elevation, a post-apocalyptic thriller with effective lead performances, gorgeous scenery, and giant bugs.

Over 95% of the human population has been eliminated due to insect-like predators called Reapers. Survivors live thousands of feet above sea level because the Reapers do not venture that high up. In the Colorado Rockies, Will (Anthony Mackie) decides to climb below the safe zone to find oxygen filters for his son with lung disease. When he learns about the Reapers’ weakness, Will contemplates if risking his life for the greater good is worth it.

    Stream Elevation on Max.

    50/50 (2011)

Seth Rogen and Joseph Gordon-Levitt in 50/50.
    Vertical

50/50 successfully tackles a sensitive issue, cancer, and injects the story with empathy, respect, and humor. 27-year-old Adam Lerner (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) receives devastating news: he has a cancerous tumor in his spine. Even with chemotherapy, Adam’s chances for survival are 50/50. While his mother and best friend Kyle (Seth Rogen) are devastated, Adam tries to remain positive.

Adam does get some hope in the form of Katherine (Anna Kendrick), a young therapist who shows him kindness. They even contemplate a relationship despite the unethicalness of the predicament. Again, 50/50 is a surprisingly sweet movie with the perfect balance between comedy and drama.

Al Pacino stands and speaks in front of a mic.
    HBO

The final months of Joe Paterno’s life were marred in controversy. The legendary Penn State football coach was supposed to go out on top. Instead, a child abuse scandal rocked the country and changed how the public perceived him. In the fall of 2011, Paterno (Al Pacino) earns his 409th win at Penn State.

Days later, reporter Sara Ganim (Riley Keough) learns about a grand jury investigation into Jerry Sandusky (Jim Johnson), Paterno’s longtime assistant coach who has been accused of child molestation. As Ganim digs for evidence, news of a cover-up by Paterno and Penn State spreads like wildfire. The gut-wrenching details are almost too much to bear. Yet Paterno is a necessary watch for those who wondered how this miscarriage of justice happened.
