  • 3 underrated Netflix movies you should watch this weekend (July 11-13)

Finding movies to watch on Netflix isn’t supposed to eat up your whole night. Netflix might have plenty of options, but the challenge comes from actually picking which one makes the most sense.

If you’ve spent hours scrolling through the streaming service looking for the perfect movie, then we’ve got you covered. We’ve pulled together three underrated movies that are all worth checking out, each of which will hopefully save you from hours of unnecessary scrolling.

We also have guides to the best new movies to stream, the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on HBO Max, and the best movies on Disney+.

    The Irishman (2019)

Martin Scorsese has often been pigeonholed as a man who only directs gangster movies, and it’s undeniably true that the director has made some great ones over the years. While Scorsese’s career is much more than just gangster movies, The Irishman seems a bit like a farewell to a genre that helped make him.

The movie tells the story of a gangster who, over the course of decades, becomes embroiled in the New York mafia and becomes a close friend of Teamsters president Jimmy Hoffa. Featuring great performances from Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci, The Irishman is a movie about men who do bad things and live long enough to reckon with what they did in their lives.

You can watch The Irishman on Netflix.

The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956)

Alfred Hitchcock made many great thrillers over his career, but The Man Who Knew Too Much is one of his more unfamiliar offerings. The film tells the story of a couple traveling in Morocco who find themselves in the middle of an international assassination plot after their son is kidnapped.

As they work to get him back, these affluent people are pushed to their limits. Anchored by Jimmy Stewart and Doris Day, The Man Who Knew Too Much is not Hitchcock’s best movie, nor is it as bad as some have suggested.

You can watch The Man Who Knew Too Much on Netflix.

    I Care A Lot (2021)

A horrific but frighteningly plausible story, I Care a Lot follows Marla Grayson, a woman who makes her bones by bilking senior citizens out of their life savings. When this schemer comes face-to-face with a gangster who wants revenge on her for the treatment she gave his mother, she has to find out whether she’s cut out to be part of the criminal underworld.

Anchored by an icy but hugely compelling performance from Rosamund Pike, I Care a Lot is a movie about one of the most vulnerable populations in America and just how easy it is to take advantage of them.

You can watch I Care a Lot on Netflix.

  • Check out this great movie before it leaves Amazon Prime Video next week (June 2025)

Scrolling through Amazon Prime Video reminds you both of the number of options available to watch on the platform, and also of how difficult it can be to actually pick something. One of the best ways to decide what to watch is to see which movies will be leaving the streamer soon.

The Aviator is one of the great movies of the 2000s, and it’s worth checking out before it leaves Prime Video. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Howard Hughes, the legendary entrepreneur and filmmaker who dated many of the most famous women in the world in the 1930s and 40s, even as he grappled with severe OCD. Here are three reasons you should check it out:

We also have guides to the best new movies to stream, the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on Max, and the best movies on Disney+.

It’s the moment when Leonardo DiCaprio went from movie star to actor

By the time we got to The Aviator, Leonardo DiCaprio was already one of the most famous men in Hollywood. He’d been in Titanic and he’d already worked with Martin Scorsese on Gangs of New York. The Aviator, though, is the moment when DiCaprio fully unlocked everything that he is capable of as an actor. It remains one of his very best performances. As Hughes, DiCaprio is both mannered and vulnerable, but the way he depicts Hughes’s OCD never feels anything other than lived in and fully embodied. Hughes was a difficult man to understand, but in DiCapiro’s hands, he feels like a complicated but ultimately coherent person.

Cate Blanchett won an Oscar for a reason

Playing one of the most decorated actresses in the history of Hollywood is no small task, but Cate Blanchett proved that she was more than up to it. She plays Katherine Hepburn, one of Hughes’s love interests in the film. Calling her simply a love interest is a huge undersell, though. As Hepburn, Blanchett creates a fiery, independent woman who is driving the relationship far more than Hughes ever seems to be. Although she’s not a perfect visual match for Hepburn (who obviously has a lengthy record of onscreen appearances), Blanchett is so precise in basically everything else that she justifiably won an Oscar for her performance.

It covers a lot of time without ever feeling predictable

One of the ultimate curses of the biopic is that they can feel incredibly safe, conventional, and boring. The Aviator is never that, though, in part because the man at its center was none of those things. This is a movie that covers a huge swath of Hughes’s life, including a famous period where he locked himself in a screening room for weeks and began bottling his own urine, without ever seeming like a conventional biopic. Instead, The Aviator feels entirely distinct, a movie about a man so singular that, even if you try to make his life into a narrative, it’s the kind of narrative that few other lives had.

You can watch The Aviator on Amazon Prime Video.

  • 3 great Max crime dramas you should watch in June 2025

Max, HBO Max, whatever it’s called. Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming service remains one of the best places to go if you’re looking for a movie. The streaming service has never fully figured out how to make sure that its subscribers can actually see everything available there, though, which is why we’ve pulled together a list of three great crime movies that you can watch now.

Whatever flavor of crime movie you’re looking for, you should be able to find it on this list. Check them out below:

    Public Enemies (2009)

Michael Mann has made a number of great crime films over the course of his career, but Public Enemies is perhaps his most underrated. The film, which tells the story of John Dillinger and the FBI’s quest to bring him down, is equal parts stylish and gritty and a throwback to an era when the most famous men in America were criminals.

Featuring a relatively grounded performance from Johnny Depp and Christian Bale as his capable foil, Public Enemies is a riveting examination of an era in American life when it felt like a particularly talented bank robber could get away with it forever.

You can watch Public Enemies on Max.

Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai (1999)

One of the most unusual movies from a great year for movies, Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai follows a contract killer who operates under an ancient samurai code. His loyalty is to a low-level mobster who saved his life years before, and he tries to do his job with the kind of honor that is absent from modern crime.

In addition to being a brilliant crime thriller anchored by Forest Whitaker in one of his best performances, Ghost Dog is the kind of movie that feels completely impossible to replicate. It’s the only movie like it out there.

You can watch Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai on Max.

    Casino (1995)

In the wake of Goodfellas, Casino reteamed Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, and Martin Scorsese for what was seen as an underwhelming follow-up. Now, Casino is differentiated enough from its predecessor to stand on its own merits, which are considerable. The film follows a low-level gangster who finds himself assigned to Las Vegas as the city is erupting with activity.

After finding early success in the job, he begins to struggle with his ex-wife, his enforcer, and the corrupt politicians that have come to define the city. A harder, edgier, and less funny movie than Goodfellas, Casino is nonetheless a worthy gangster epic.

  • Martin Scorsese says he can no longer watch any movies in theaters

Few directors have spent more time advocating for movies and movie theaters over the course of their careers than Martin Scorsese. In a recent interview with film critic Peter Travers, Scorsese said that he can no longer stand watching movies in theaters, and that includes his own films.

“I asked the maestro why he doesn’t see movies in theatres any more and he went all raging bull about audiences who babble on phones during the movie, leave to order snacks and vats of soda, and keep up a noise level loud enough to drown out the actors,” Travers said, per The Guardian.

“‘Come on, Marty,’ I said, ‘we couldn’t keep our mouths shut when we were kids,’” Travers said, explaining that he had tried to remind the director that bad behavior in movie theaters isn’t new.

“His [Scorsese’s] eyes darkened. ‘Yeah, maybe,’ he conceded, ‘but when we talked it was always about the movie and the fun we had chewing over the details.’”

Scorsese’s stance comes several years after he made related, controversial comments suggesting that the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies were akin to theme park rides. Even as he has continued to make great films, Scorsese has also become one of the leading voices on the state of the American film industry.

The director has been working in Hollywood for 50 years now, and has made classics like Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, and Goodfellas over the course of his careers. His two most recent films, The Irishman and Killers of the Flower Moon, were both partnerships with streaming services.

  • 3 underrated Amazon Prime Video movies you should watch this weekend (April 11-13)

We are living in an era when the number of shows and movies available to us is greater than ever. In spite of this abundance of choices, though, it can be paralyzing to find something that’s worth your time. That’s why we’ve put together this list of three movies on Amazon Prime Video that will all be worth your time.

Whether you’re looking for something serious and contemplative or want to laugh and have a good time, this list should have something for you.

Need more recommendations? We also have guides to the best new movies to stream, best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on Max, and the best movies on Disney+.

    The Thin Red Line (1998)

Terrence Malick is a director like no other, which makes describing his films exceptionally difficult. The Thin Red Line is set in the Pacific theater during World War II and follows a group of soldiers preparing for the Battle of Guadalcanal.

Featuring an array of talented young actors, the movie is ultimately a meditation on the nature of life, death, and war, featuring the kinds of digressions and tangents that make Malick’s movies so distinct. The Thin Red Line also features an all-time great score from Hans Zimmer and cameos from actors like George Clooney, who were almost completely cut out of the final version.

You can watch The Thin Red Line on Amazon Prime Video.

    Bowfinger (1999)

Without exaggeration, one of the funniest films ever made. Bowfinger is a showbiz story about an aspiring filmmaker who finally decides to make the movie of his dreams. To make his dream of moviemaking a reality, he decides to partner with one of the biggest stars in Hollywood, filming an entire movie around him without being aware that he’s in it.

Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy make for a perfect comedic tag team here, and Bowfinger has enough gags to leave you rolling long after the credits are over. It’s got a little heart, too, but really, Bowfinger has two comedic geniuses at the top of their game, and that’s what makes it special.

You can watch Bowfinger on Amazon Prime Video.

The Last Temptation of Christ (1988)

Martin Scorsese’s chronicling of the life of Jesus Christ was controversial at the time and, even all these years later, still reads to some as sacrilege. The movie follows Jesus as he becomes a savior, even as he is plagued by doubt and confusion about whether he is everything he claims to be.

The movie’s final sequence, which involves Jesus imagining a normal life for himself, was controversial, but it’s also what makes the entire enterprise work. Willem Dafoe is exemplary in the central role, and Last Temptation is still one of Scorsese’s most fascinating, thought-provoking movies all these years later.

You can watch The Last Temptation of Christ on Amazon Prime Video.
