  • 3 underrated Amazon Prime Video movies you should watch this weekend (May 30-June 1)

If you’re scrolling through Amazon Prime Video and looking for something great to watch, you may have noticed that it can be hard to find anything in particular. Hours of searching benefit no one, even if it’s something that many of us find ourselves doing on a regular basis.

That’s why we’ve pulled together this list of three underrated films available on Prime Video right now. Each of them is well worth your time, no matter what kind of movie you might be looking for.

We also have guides to the best new movies to stream, the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on Max, and the best movies on Disney+.

    Air (2023)

One of the miracles of Air is that it depicts a bunch of guys who made a shoe. The film follows Sonny Vaccaro, a basketball executive at Nike who becomes convinced that Michael Jordan is a generational star. As Nike puts all of their efforts into signing the talented player, we come to understand the lengths the company went to to manufacture Air Jordan.

The brand, and Jordan himself, became hugely successful as a result of the deal. Even though this is, fundamentally, a movie about a big business bet that pays off, it’s also endlessly charming and anchored by Matt Damon in full movie star mode.

You can watch Air on Amazon Prime Video.

    The Aviator (2004)

One of Leonardo DiCaprio’s best performances, The Aviator stars DiCaprio as Howard Hughes, the famously eccentric billionaire and filmmaker who dated many famous women in Hollywood.

Directed by Martin Scorsese, The Aviator highlights Hughes’s mental illness and brilliance and the way those two were almost always at war with one another. This is the movie where DiCaprio showed everyone exactly what he was capable of, and even 20 years later, it’s hard to think of many performances better than this one.

You can watch The Aviator on Amazon Prime Video.

    Hotel Rwanda (2004)

A heartbreaking look at the Rwandan genocide, Hotel Rwanda follows a hotel manager trying to shield as many people from harm as possible. The story’s message follows similar beats from other movies like Schindler’s List. Hotel Rwanda is remarkable because of its depiction of recent history in this African setting.

Don Cheadle received boatloads of praise for his central performance in the film, and deservedly so. Hotel Rwanda looks at the abject evil of its central story in the face in an attempt to understand it.

You can watch Hotel Rwanda on Amazon Prime Video.

  • Universal has lost the Jason Bourne rights, and there may be a reboot coming

For over two decades, Universal Pictures has been the home of Robert Ludlum’s spy action hero Jason Bourne, which led to five feature films set in that world. But now, the rights to Bourne have lapsed, and the Ludlum estate reportedly has interest from other major Hollywood studios and streamers to bring Jason Bourne to a new home.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Skydance, Apple Studios, and Netflix have already met with representatives for the Ludlum estate, and there’s more than just Jason Bourne in play. The rights for all of Ludlum’s books and characters are up for grabs. However, THR notes that Universal could still potentially regain the rights if it “makes an attractive bid,” but the studio had let the property languish on the big screen for the better part of a decade.

Matt Damon played Bourne in the first film, The Bourne Identity, in 2002. He reprised his role across three sequels, most recently in 2016’s Jason Bourne. There was a separate Damon-less sequel called The Bourne Legacy in 2012, which introduced Jeremy Renner as Aaron Cross, a man who was subjected to the same program that made Bourne a formidable killer. Cross and Bourne have yet to cross paths on the big screen, and now that may never happen.

As recently as 2023, Universal considered making a sixth Bourne movie with Damon back in the role. Conclave director Edward Berger even came on board to develop the story. Although that project didn’t come together, a new Jason Bourne film could either start the franchise over from scratch with a reboot or invite Damon back to his signature role at least one more time. Those plans aren’t likely to be finalized either way until the Bourne rights have a new deal in place.

  • Ben Affleck says he doesn’t have ‘many friends’ except Matt Damon

    Ben Affleck and Matt Damon
Ben Affleck and Matt Damon have been best friends for decades.

    • Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s relationship goes back decades, when their moms introduced them as kids.
    • Affleck told BI at the “The Accountant 2” premiere that he doesn’t have many close friends.
    • “You don’t need a million friends. You need a few,” Affleck said.

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s decadeslong friendship is precious — just ask Affleck.

“It’s a beautiful thing,” Affleck told reporters at the red carpet premiere of “The Accountant 2” at the SXSW Film & TV Festival Saturday. “You know, I don’t have very many — none of us really have very many friends. You don’t need a million friends. You need a few. You need good ones.”

“I’m really lucky to have had a friend in Matt,” he added.

Affleck and Damon’s friendship extends back to their childhood, when their moms introduced them as kids in the 1980s. They’ve come a long way since working as uncredited extras together on the 1989 Kevin Costner movie “Field of Dreams,” including winning an Oscar together for writing “Good Will Hunting” in 1998.

It’s not just Affleck who’s gushed about their friendship. In 2023, Damon reflected on how his bond with Affleck changed after his dad died in 2017, calling his friendship with Affleck one of “the three most significant partnerships” in his life.

In addition to their busy acting careers — Damon can next be seen leading the stacked cast of Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey,” while Affleck returns for “The Accountant 2” in April — both have thriving behind-the-scenes careers as producers.

In 2022, they founded Artists Equity together, and “The Accountant 2” is one of the films they’ve produced. It’s a far cry from their days sharing a bank account and hoping their power wouldn’t get turned off.

“It’s been very rewarding to create an opportunity for other people, directors and artists, to kind of be able to take responsibility for and manage and have a more creative say in their projects,” Affleck said, adding that “The Accountant 2” director Gavin O’Connor had a strong vision for the film. “We wanted to set him up to succeed, and I feel like this movie, frankly, really validates that approach.”

“The Accountant 2” is in theaters April 25.
