  • 3 great HBO Max crime dramas you should watch in July 2025

Although it’s had more than its fair share of branding issues over the years, HBO Max features an impressive library of movies across a wide array of genres. Because it owns decades of Warner Bros. classics, crime is a deep genre on the service.

We’ve pulled together three movies in that genre that are well worth your time. These movies range in decades and styles, but they’re also a reminder of just how many kinds of movies can fit into the brand descriptor of a crime movie. Check them out on HBO Max:

    End of Watch (2012)

A bracing, harrowing look at policing in one of Los Angeles’s most dangerous neighborhoods, End of Watch stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña as a pair of LAPD officers who push the rules but are undeniably faithful to their duties as officers. When they run afoul of the Mexican cartel, every aspect of their personal lives is upended, and they find themselves struggling to keep both their jobs and their lives.

Directed by David Ayer, End of Watch is certainly sympathetic to its central police officers, but the movie is also honest about all the ways the broader system is failing both the cops trying to enforce the law and the people who wind up on the other side of their actions.

    Blood Simple (1984)

The Coen brothers made a long career out of telling a wide variety of crime stories (as well as by making a variety of other fascinating movies), but Blood Simple is their first directorial effort, and it remains among their most potent. The movie tells the story of a bar owner who discovers that his younger wife is having an affair with one of the bartenders.

When he hires a cheap private investigator to kill them, he blackmails them instead, and all hell breaks loose. As is typical in Coen brothers movies, the farce is part of the point here and also a potent reminder that when everyone acts in their own self-interest, things can spin out of control with remarkable speed.

    M (1931)

One of the very first crime dramas of its kind, the influential M is set in an interwar Germany and follows the Berlin-wide hunt for a serial killer who is killing children. The killer’s crimes are so repugnant that even other criminal organizations organize to find him, and he finds himself increasingly isolated as he works to avoid capture.

Tense, surprising, and riveting almost 100 years after its release, M is a reminder that they have been making great crime films as long as they have been making great movies. M might seem like homework, but the second you turn it on, you’ll realize that it has earned every bit of its reputation as one of the best movies ever made.

  • Longer commercial breaks lower the value of ad-based streaming subscriptions

Amazon Prime Video subscribers aren’t the only streaming customers being subjected to longer commercial breaks lately. Warner Bros. Discovery’s (WBD) Max has increased the amount of commercials it shows to US subscribers from approximately four minutes per hour to about six minutes per hour.

A US support page for Max currently says that subscribers to Max with ads “can expect about 6 minutes of ads per hour.” But PCWorld noticed this week that this differs from what Max used to claim, which as recently as February was “about 4 minutes” of ads an hour, per the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine. Some of Max’s geographies have smaller ad loads. For example, WBD’s support page for Saint Kitts and Nevis says Max ad subscribers should expect about four minutes of ads hourly.

A 50 percent increase in the duration of commercials that US subscribers see puts Max’s ad load on par with that of Prime Video, which AdWeek reported last week also increased its ad load from four minutes per hour to six minutes per hour. For comparison, Netflix shows four to five minutes of ads per hour, according to earlier PC World reporting, and Peacock shows to five to seven minutes of ads hourly, per The Streamable.

  • 3 great Max crime dramas you should watch in June 2025

Max, HBO Max, whatever it’s called. Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming service remains one of the best places to go if you’re looking for a movie. The streaming service has never fully figured out how to make sure that its subscribers can actually see everything available there, though, which is why we’ve pulled together a list of three great crime movies that you can watch now.

Whatever flavor of crime movie you’re looking for, you should be able to find it on this list. Check them out below:

Need more recommendations? Then check out the best new movies to stream this week, the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on Max, and the best movies on Disney+.

    Public Enemies (2009)

Michael Mann has made a number of great crime films over the course of his career, but Public Enemies is perhaps his most underrated. The film, which tells the story of John Dillinger and the FBI’s quest to bring him down, is equal parts stylish and gritty and a throwback to an era when the most famous men in America were criminals.

Featuring a relatively grounded performance from Johnny Depp and Christian Bale as his capable foil, Public Enemies is a riveting examination of an era in American life when it felt like a particularly talented bank robber could get away with it forever.

Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai (1999)

One of the most unusual movies from a great year for movies, Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai follows a contract killer who operates under an ancient samurai code. His loyalty is to a low-level mobster who saved his life years before, and he tries to do his job with the kind of honor that is absent from modern crime.

In addition to being a brilliant crime thriller anchored by Forest Whitaker in one of his best performances, Ghost Dog is the kind of movie that feels completely impossible to replicate. It’s the only movie like it out there.

You can watch Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai on Max.

    Casino (1995)

In the wake of Goodfellas, Casino reteamed Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, and Martin Scorsese for what was seen as an underwhelming follow-up. Now, Casino is differentiated enough from its predecessor to stand on its own merits, which are considerable. The film follows a low-level gangster who finds himself assigned to Las Vegas as the city is erupting with activity.

After finding early success in the job, he begins to struggle with his ex-wife, his enforcer, and the corrupt politicians that have come to define the city. A harder, edgier, and less funny movie than Goodfellas, Casino is nonetheless a worthy gangster epic.

  • 3 underrated HBO Max movies you should watch this weekend (May 30-June 1)

The Final Destination movies are back in the cultural zeitgeist thanks to the success of Final Destination Bloodlines. The Final Destination movies occupy five of the spots in HBO Max’s top 10. Expect Bloodlines to reach the same heights of popularity once it hits the streamer.

Luckily for cinephiles, there are more options on HBO Max besides entries from the iconic horror franchise. One underrated movie to stream is Magic Mike’s Last Dance, the final film in the adult dancing trilogy. Find out how to watch Last Dance and two other movies below.

We also have guides to the best new movies to stream, the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on Max, and the best movies on Disney+.

    Magic Mike’s Last Dance (2023)

Magic Mike’s Last Dance was originally conceived as a streaming original. However, Mike Lane’s final bow was worthy of the big screen, so Warner Bros. gave it a theatrical release. After leaving the stage, Mike Lane (Channing Tatum) finds himself broke without a job thanks to a business deal gone wrong.

While working as a bartender in Florida, Mike gets a lifeline from Max (Salma Hayek Pinault), a wealthy socialite who hires the former stripper to work as a choreographer for a play in London. As hard as he tries to break away from dancing, Mike keeps coming back to the stage. It’s his destiny, but in Last Dance, Mike wants to write his own rules in this fitting end to an underrated trilogy.

Belichick & Saban: The Art of Coaching (2019)

Bill Belichick is one of the five greatest coaches in NFL history. The same can be said for Nick Saban in college football. Belichick and Saban have combined to win over a dozen Super Bowls and national championships. You would think these two alphas are competitors on different sides. It turns out that Belichick and Saban have been close friends for over 40 years.

Known for being private and tight-lipped about their personal lives, Belichick & Saban: The Art of Coaching is an all-access look into the duo’s relationship and the coaching principles that have led to success. Want to know the secret behind these two titans? Watch the documentary, and you might learn a thing or two.

Stream Belichick & Saban: The Art of Coaching on Max.

    Sweethearts (2024)

Long-distance relationships are a tale as old as time for many college freshmen. In Sweethearts, best friends Ben (Nico Hiraga) and Jamie (Kiernan Shipka) are both dating their respective high school sweethearts. During their first semester, the two friends agree to break up with their significant others over Thanksgiving.

The night before Thanksgiving, Ben and Jamie go out to a party in their hometown, which leads to a chaotic night of hijinks, regrets, and revelations. Plus, there might be a little romance sprinkled at certain moments. Sweethearts is a warm, effective movie about the importance of friendship. It also perfectly captures the anxiety that many young people face when returning home for the first time from college.

  • 5 best HBO Max movies to watch on Memorial Day

Memorial Day occupies its awkward corner at the end of May as a time both to honor our fallen heroes and to celebrate the unofficial beginning of summer. To that end, both war films and summer films are called for to while away the long weekend before we can start preparing our out-of-office emails. Here are five movies on HBO Max worthy of any post-barbecue evening — three movies about summer and two about war.

We also have guides to the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on Max, and the best movies on Disney+.

    Mystic Pizza (1988)

Mystic Pizza, the story of three waitresses at a real-life Connecticut eatery the summer before college, does everything movies of this type are supposed to do in creating an impossibly bucolic world: everyone owns waterfront property, it’s perpetually a beautiful New England summer, and townies look like Julia Roberts.

Also, everyone survives exclusively on pizza, though it is Connecticut-style pizza, which proves you can’t have everything. With a script co-written by Pulitzer Prize-winning dramatist Alfred Uhry, Mystic Pizza has a pedigree far more prestigious than its (forgive me) cheesy reputation.

Stream Mystic Pizza on HBO Max.

    Seven Samurai (1954)

For any other filmmaker, Seven Samurai would be a career-defining masterpiece. For Akira Kurosawa, it was merely an entry in his impossibly illustrious 1950s, alongside Rashomon, Ikiru, and Throne of Blood. Takashi Shimura (also a co-star of Rashomon and Ikiru) leads a band of mercenaries contracted to engage in a great battle to protect a village from bandits.

Seven Samurai was made in the rubble of Japan’s recovery from World War II, and it is, unmistakably, a war film. It is a portrait of what makes a society both at peace and at war — its organization, discipline, fears, entertainment, and weaknesses — and its selective need for those who can protect it in a crisis, only to discard them once that crisis has passed.

Stream Seven Samurai on HBO Max.

    Aftersun (2022)

Aftersun, a Charlotte Wells film loosely based on a summer trip the director took with her own father as a child, feels like a memory. Set at a low-grade beach resort in Turkey, the film follows Wells’ counterpart, 11-year-old Sophie (Frankie Corio), and her 30-year-old father, Calum (Paul Mescal).

Calum’s youth gets him confused for Sophie’s brother more than once, and the keen sense that his childhood was interrupted by Sophie’s arrival pervades the film. Mescal received his first Oscar nomination for this achingly gorgeous memory play.

    Stream Aftersun on HBO Max.

The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (1943)

Forty years of British war-making are soaringly summarized in this superb film by the prototypical British wartime filmmakers, Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger (The Red Shoes). Roger Livesey is Clive Wynne-Candy, who climbs from enlisted man in the Boer War to major general during World War II, guided by a sense of stereotypically English honor that becomes more archaic as the century winds on.

There is something unique about the way Powell and Pressburger use Technicolor. Their films, especially this one, have a texture and richness almost nothing can match; one wants to lick them off the screen.

Stream The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp on HBO Max.

    A Tale of Summer (1996)

Gaspard (Melvil Poupaud) has a problem. He’s waiting patiently by the seaside in the north of France for his on-again, off-again girlfriend, Lena (Aurélia Nolin), but he’s also being pursued by Solene (Gwenaëlle Simon) and nursing a will-they-won’t-they friendship with waitress Margot (Amanda Langlet).

This, if you’re curious, is what passes for a problem in France. Éric Rohmer’s exquisitely French romance, lazy and contemplative as a perfect summer’s day, never ceases to delight as the years go on.

  • 3 underrated HBO Max movies you should watch this weekend (May 23-25)

One of Warner Bros. bigger releases of the year finally arrives on HBO Max. Mickey 17, Bong Joon Ho’s sci-fi black comedy based on Edward Ashton’s novel, hits the service on May 24. One of the film’s legacies will be its box office disappointment. However, Bong remains a master of social critique, and Mickey 17 will find a new life on streaming once more people see it.

Mickey 17 is only one of the many movies on HBO Max. (Yes, HBO Max is coming back.) When you look past the homepage, you’ll find some underrated movies that are worth streaming. Our picks are a Final Destination entry, a Judd Apatow dramedy, and a twisty sci-fi thriller.

We also have guides to the best new movies to stream, the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on Max, and the best movies on Disney+.

    Final Destination 5 (2011)

The year is 2025, and a Final Destination movie rules the box office. Is America back? Before Final Destination Bloodlines, the last entry in the franchise was 2011’s Final Destination 5. The fifth movie begins with its trademark premonition set on a suspension bridge.

Sam (Nicholas D’Agosto) saves his ex-girlfriend Molly Harper (Emma Bell), boss Peter Friedkin (Miles Fisher), and a few others from dying on the bridge. However, you can’t cheat Death in this franchise, and the Grim Reaper returns with a vengeance. Final Destination 5 plays the hits, but the twist ending provided an effective wrinkle to a tried-and-true formula.

Stream Final Destination 5 on Max.

    Funny People (2009)

Funny People is a fascinating movie in Apatow’s filmography. Excuse the pun, but Funny People is not Apatow’s funniest or best. It’s fairly flawed, but the performances from Adam Sandler and Seth Rogen continue to age rather well. After being diagnosed with leukemia, movie star George Simmons (Sandler) returns to stand-up comedy. While at a comedy club, George meets Ira (Rogen), a struggling comedian looking for his big break.

George decides to take Ira under his wing while also fixing the flawed relationships in his life. There’s a great movie in the first half of Funny People, as it focuses on an imperfect man grappling with mortality. Apatow just needs to cut some scenes out of the second half.

    Stream Funny People on Max.

    Companion (2025)

Released in January, Companion didn’t quite have the same impact as Barbarian. However, Drew Hancock’s sci-fi thriller had some fun moments in this twisty take on a robot movie. Iris (Sophie Thatcher) heads to a remote cabin for a weekend getaway with her boyfriend, Josh (Jack Quaid), and a few other friends.

The next day, Sophie finds herself covered in blood. What happened? Although the trailer spoiled one of the twists, I’ll refrain from saying anything. One of the guests is a subservient android designed to be a companion to another human. We’ll stop there and let you put the rest of the pieces together.

  • 3 underrated HBO Max movies you should watch this weekend (May 16-18)

Did you see the latest trailer for Superman? The new footage hammered down the emotional dilemma Superman faces as he tries to find his place in the world. Fans of James Gunn will know the filmmaker has a knack for telling impassioned stories, i.e., the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy. Gunn clearly wants to make an emotional superhero epic. We’ll find out if that happens on July 11.

Superman will likely stream on HBO Max by the end of 2025. For now, try streaming some under-the-radar movies this weekend. Our suggestions include a South Park documentary, a wild neo-noir, and a mystery romance.

We also have guides to the best new movies to stream, the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on Max, and the best movies on Disney+.

6 Days to Air: The Making of South Park (2011)

South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone are geniuses, full stop. The duo are two of the most prolific creators in the entertainment industry, with multiple Emmys and Tonys to prove it. Sure, some of South Park’s humor may be viewed as lewd or vulgar, but my god is it hilarious. Many people don’t know how much effort goes into making one episode of South Park.

6 Days to Air is a fascinating view into the construction of one of the most successful adult animated TV shows. Most television shows are completed weeks to months in advance. South Park elects to finish the show hours before it airs to capitalize on current events. Watching Parker, Stone, and their team come up with the voices and stories is like watching Picasso paint. Fans are in for a treat as the writers make HumancentiPad, an episode that parodies iPhones and The Human Centipede.

Stream 6 Days to Air: The Making of South Park on Max.

    Inherent Vice (2014)

Inherent Vice is ranked in the back half of Paul Thomas Anderson’s filmography. Unfortunately for Inherent Vice, it’s sandwiched between two of PTA’s best movies, 2012’s The Master and 2017’s Phantom Thread. What this neo-noir has in its favor is comedy. Inherent Vice might be one of Anderson’s funniest movies.

The underrated crime movie stars Joaquin Phoenix as Larry “Doc” Sportello, a private detective asked by his ex-girlfriend Shasta (Katherine Waterston) to help keep her new boyfriend out of a mental hospital. Shasta eventually goes missing, forcing Doc to navigate a complicated world of crime, drugs, and cops. At times this movie is incoherent and confusing. I suggest going with the flow and treating it like a sophisticated stoner comedy.

    Stream Inherent Vice on Max.

    Where the Crawdads Sing (2022)

Audiences have proven time and time again that they will show out for mystery romance movies based on popular novels. Colleen Hoover adaptations are becoming more prevalent in Hollywood thanks to It Ends with Us. In that same vein, Where the Crawdads Sing was a sleeper hit in 2022, grossing over $144 million on a $24 million budget.

Based on Delia Owens’ novel, Where the Crawdads Sing stars Daisy Edgar-Jones as Kya, a young girl abandoned by her family and forced to live by herself in the North Carolina marsh. Despite being a social outcast, Kya is surprisingly charged with murdering local hero Chase Andrews (Harris Dickinson). The ensuing courtroom drama seeks to answer who killed Chase while revealing insight into Kya, who has been overlooked by society.

  • Game of Thrones prequel A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms pushed back to 2026

One of the ideas behind running two different Game of Thrones prequels at once was to keep the franchise alive on HBO and Max during the long breaks between seasons. However, the next prequel series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, will now be skipping 2025 altogether. And that may mean both House of the Dragon season 3 and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms could come out in the same year.

Via Variety, HBO confirmed the delay when it screened a trailer for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms during its upfront presentation. The trailer ended with a vague 2026 release window, but HBO CEO Casey Bloys suggested that it would be released in winter 2026. That would have it premiere on HBO and Max in either January or February 2026. HBO hasn’t announced when House of the Dragon will return. But if season 3 doesn’t premiere in 2026, then pushing it back to 2027 would mean a nearly three-year gap between seasons. House of the Dragon season 3 is currently in production.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms takes place only a century before Game of Thrones, and it’s based on George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas. The story focuses on a poor knight, Ser Duncan the Tall (Peter Claffey), who befriends Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell), a young boy who is secretly one of the Targaryen heirs to the Iron Throne. Several members of Egg’s family will appear in the series, including Prince Aerion Targaryen (Finn Bennett), Prince Baelor Targaryen (Bertie Carvel), and Prince Maekar Targaryen (Sam Spruell).

Much like the Song of Ice and Fire novels, Martin hasn’t written all of Dunk and Egg’s adventures yet, but he has touched upon their ultimate fates beyond their time together. Martin’s next novel, The Winds of Winter, has yet to be completed and there is no word on when or if it will be finished.

  • HBO, Max, or HBO Max? Warner Bros. Discovery finally chooses a name that makes sense

Matthew McConaughey said it best. “Sometimes you gotta go back to actually move forward.” Warner Bros. Discovery is taking McConaughey’s advice to heart as the company’s streaming platform will be rebranded as HBO Max.

On Wednesday, Warner Bros. Discovery executives announced the name change at their upfront presentation in New York. When the streamer first launched in 2020, it carried the name HBO Max. Three years later, WBD dropped HBO from the title, with the result being Max. The controversial decision has already been adjusted two years later, with HBO Max returning this summer.

“The powerful growth we have seen in our global streaming service is built around the quality of our programming,” David Zaslav, President and CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, said. “Today, we are bringing back HBO, the brand that represents the highest quality in media, to further accelerate that growth in the years ahead.”

During the presentation, Warner Bros. Discovery revealed that its streaming business has shifted profitability by almost $3 billion in two years. The streamer has added 22 million subscribers in new global markets. WBD believes they can surpass 150 million subscribers by the end of 2026.

The company believes they have distinguished themselves through their “quality and distinct stories.” A return to HBO Max will “further drive the service forward,” the press release said.

Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content, added, “With the course we are on and strong momentum we are enjoying, we believe HBO Max far better represents our current consumer proposition. And it clearly states our implicit promise to deliver content that is recognized as unique and, to steal a line we always said at HBO, worth paying for.”

HBO Max had a strong first two quarters thanks to hits like The White Lotus season 3, The Last of Us season 2, and The Pitt. 2026 should be an even bigger year for the service with House of the Dragon season 3 and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, followed by Harry Potter in 2027.

Max currently offers three paid plans: Basic with Ads at $10 per month, Standard at $17 per month, and Premium at $21 per month.
