  • 3 underrated Amazon Prime Video movies you should watch this weekend (April 25-27)

Streaming is convenient, but finding a movie to watch on a weekend evening can be more time-consuming than actually viewing the movie. Amazon Prime Video is one of several services you might be interested in using to find something to watch. We’ve done the hard work of actually finding a movie for you.

All three of these movies are, to one extent or another, underrated, and each deserves a far better than the reception they’ve received to date. Whatever you’re looking for, you’re sure to find something great on this list:

Need more recommendations? We also have guides to the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on Max, and the best movies on Disney+.

    Macbeth (2015)

Look, you probably know the deal with Macbeth. It’s one of Shakespeare’s most famous plays and tells the story of a Scottish lord who becomes convinced that he’s destined to become king and does whatever it takes to get there.

What makes this version of the story work, in addition to brilliant central performances from Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard, is director Justin Kurtzel’s sense of scale. There have been plenty of artful versions of Macbeth, but this one might be the most impressive on a visual level.

You can watch Macbeth on Amazon Prime Video.

    Bull Durham (1988)

There have been many great movies about baseball, and Bull Durham remains one of the best. Set in the world of minor league baseball, the film stars Kevin Costner as a minor league vet nearing the end of his career who finds himself in a love triangle with a baseball fan and a rising star pitcher on his team who is destined for the majors.

The brilliant movie is romantic about baseball and cynical about the industry built around it. Bull Durham came out just two years after Field of Dreams and cemented both Costner’s status as a movie star and our willingness to watch him in basically any baseball movie.

Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead (2007)

A brilliant, subversive crime saga anchored by two brilliant performances from Philip Seymour Hoffman and Ethan Hawke, Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead follows two playing brothers who decide to rob their parents. When their father decides to hunt down the criminals who have ripped him off, he begins to chase down his own sons, leading to a series of interwoven crises as these brothers try to clean up the mess they’ve made.

Directed by Sidney Lumet, one of the masters of this kind of movie, Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead manages to feel chaotic without ever feeling out of control. Thanks to its remarkable ensemble cast, it’s the kind of movie you’ll be riveted by from beginning to end.

  • Steven Soderbergh says that mid-budget movies underperforming at the box office is ‘not a good thing for movies’

After Steven Soderbergh’s Black Bag underperformed at the domestic box office despite a strong critical response, the director reflected on the movie’s public reception. In speaking with The Independent, Soderbergh said that the muted reception for his movie is a bad omen for Hollywood more generally.

“This is the kind of film I made my career on,” he said. “And if a mid-level budget, star-driven movie can’t seem to get people over the age of 25 years old to come out to theaters — if that’s truly a dead zone — then that’s not a good thing for movies. What’s gonna happen to the person behind me who wants to make this kind of film?”

“I know for a fact, having talked to somebody who works at another studio, that the Monday after Black Bag opened, the conversation in the morning meeting was: ‘What does this mean when you can’t get a movie like this to perform?’ And that’s frustrating,” he continued.

Black Bag stars Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett as two British spies who begin to do some clandestine work on one another. The movie was released by Focus Features, and Soderbergh said that the studio told him the movie will turn a profit.

Still, “the bottom line is that we need to figure out a way to cultivate this audience for movies that are in this mid-range, that aren’t fantasy spectacles or low-budget horror movies,” the director said. “They’re movies for grown-ups, and those can’t just go away.”

Soderbergh added that many of his most famous movies might not get made today: “Erin Brockovich wouldn’t get made today; Traffic wouldn’t get made. Unless you get Timothée Chalamet who, god bless him, seems to be interested in doing different kinds of movies. But that window is getting smaller and smaller for filmmakers to climb through.”

  • Michael Fassbender auditioned for James Bond, but recommended Daniel Craig for the part

Now that James Bond is under new ownership, there’s been plenty of speculation about who might be cast as the iconic character in the next film installment. Michael Fassbender, meanwhile, is revealing that the last time the Broccoli family was casting the character, he was one of the people who auditioned.

“I met with Barbara Broccoli just you know through passing and I actually went in to an audition phase before Daniel [Craig] was cast, but I don’t think I was ever in the mix,” Fassbender said during an episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast. “But I remember going into that room and meeting with her and [Michael G.] Wilson and I think I was like, ‘Daniel Craig is…’ I don’t know why I was promoting him. I should have been promoting myself.”

Fassbender added that he had also bombed an audition for Mad Max: Fury Road after showing up at the Warner Bros. lot an hour late. “This is what I was saying. I was terrible at auditions,” he said. “Obviously Daniel did a fantastic job and went on to be, I think, the most successful Bond in history. But that was it really, there was never a conversation after that.”

Fassbender was several young, international stars who auditioned for the role at the time.

Martin Campbell, who directed Casino Royale, Craig’s first Bond film, said that Henry Cavill made an excellent impression during his audition. Ultimately, though, he ended up being too young for the part.

“He looked great in the audition. His acting was tremendous,” Campbell told Express UK. “And look, if Daniel didn’t exist, Henry would have made an excellent Bond. He looked terrific, he was in great physical shape… Very handsome, very chiseled. He just looked a little young at that time back then.”

  • Michael Fassbender recalls ‘awful’ Mad Max: Fury Road audition

Michael Fassbender had his eyes set on entering the Wasteland in Mad Max: Fury Road. However, that never happened.

Fassbender recently spoke about his Fury Road tryout on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, calling it one of his “worst” auditions.

“Oh my God. It was awful,” Fassbender said.

The Oscar nominee explained how the audition started poorly even before entering the room due to getting lost on the way to the Warner Bros. lot.

“I was going to Warner Bros. in the Valley, not complicated,” Fassbender explained. “I got lost, and I ended up getting to the audition almost an hour late. I was not in the correct headspace.”

Upon arriving late, Fassbender met George Miller’s acting coach, who immediately worsened the situation.

“It was so excruciating,” Fassbender said when describing the acting coach. “I’ve been classically trained, so I have my process of, obviously, there’s an objective that the character has and activities that I’m gonna play to get it. So I felt like you’re teaching granny how to suck eggs here. This guy really got on my nerves.”

Fassbender hilariously explained how the coach wanted him to “physicalize” his performance after reciting a phrase. This only added insult to injury, as Fassbender could not convey the coach’s instructions.

“I couldn’t wait to get out of there. Obviously, I didn’t get the part,” Fassbender jokingly admitted. “Tom Hardy got the part, and deservedly so.”

As Fassbender stated, Hardy went on to play “Mad Max” Rockatansky in Fury Road, one of the most critically acclaimed action movies of the 21st century.

Perhaps Fassbender could get another crack at the Wasteland if Miller makes another Mad Max movie.
