  • 3 action movies on Netflix you need to watch in July 2025

Action remains one of the more popular genres on Netflix. One of our picks for July, The Old Guard 2, is currently one of the 10 most popular movies on the service. Fans of Gerard Butler will be happy to see that PlaneDen of Thieves 2: Pantera, and London Has Fallen are all available to stream.

It’s hard to go wrong with action on Netflix. At worst, you’ll find a mediocre 100-minute thriller with some good action that passes the time. Thankfully, the three movies below all have redeeming qualities to make them worthy of a stream.

We also have guides to the best new movies to stream, the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on HBO Max, and the best movies on Disney+.

Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation (2015)

To some fans, Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation is the best entry in the franchise. I don’t have that same belief, but it’s certainly in the top three. Ghost Protocol reinvigorated the franchise after a slight misfire in Mission: Impossible IIIRogue Nation took what worked in Ghost Protocol — large-scale action set pieces —and infused it with suspenseful espionage not seen since Brian De Palma’s Mission: Impossible.

When the CIA decommissions the IMF, Ethan Hunt refuses to turn himself in and becomes a fugitive. He becomes a lone wolf and searches for the Syndicate, a sinister organization filled with rogue agents and field operatives. Thankfully, Ethan’s trusty team, including Benji (Simon Pegg) and Luther (Ving Rhames), is not far behind and ready to help out their leader. Rogue Nation is best known for introducing Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson), who is arguably the best character in the series behind Ethan.

    Pacific Rim (2013)

Have you ever watched Power Rangers? At the end of every episode, the Power Rangers combine their vehicles (“Zords”) into a gigantic humanoid robot, the Megazord. Now imagine if Megazords fought humongous sea monsters. That’s essentially the gist of Pacific Rim. Oh, there’s one major caveat — Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro co-wrote and directed the movie.

After enormous monsters (“Kaiju”) emerge from the sea, humanity builds Jaegers —giant robots that are piloted by two humans — to defend their cities. The Kaiju eventually defeat most of the Jaegers, leaving mankind in dire straits. Desperate, the military recruits Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnam), a former pilot who reluctantly agrees to fly a Jaeger alongside a rookie named Mako (Rinko Kikuchi). Del Toro has a deep understanding of science fiction. However, it’s his eye for action and spectacle that allows Pacific Rim to soar.

    The Old Guard 2 (2025)

In the beginning stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, Netflix released The Old Guard in July 2020. Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, The Old Guard quickly became one of the streamer’s best original action movies. Five years later, the sequel, The Old Guard 2, is finally streaming. About six months after the events of the first film, Andy (Charlize Theron) and her newly formed team of mercenaries are still serving as Earth’s protectors.

While most of the group is immortal, Andy lost her power to heal herself, meaning she can die. When the first immortal (Uma Thurman) threatens to eliminate millions of humans, Andy and Co. answer the call, despite knowing it’s a trap. The sequel clearly missed Prince-Bythewood’s direction, especially when staging action sequences. However, adding Thurman to play the villain is a major upgrade, and her eventual showdown with Theron is worth the watch.

  • 3 great free movies to stream this weekend (May 16-18)

The box office still belongs to Marvel thanks to the success of Thunderbolts*. The MCU offering has grossed $278 million worldwide heading into its third weekend in theaters. However, Final Destination Bloodlines is poised for a franchise-best opening weekend that would top the box office.

Theaters will be offering new summer blockbusters every week for the next three months. When you can’t make it to the theater, try streaming a free movie on a FAST service like Tubi and Pluto TV. These services continue to increase in popularity due to their no-cost options. Our recommendations for this weekend include a surprise horror hit, a Mission: Impossible entry, and a puzzling thriller.

We also have guides to the best new movies to stream, the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on Max, and the best movies on Disney+.

    Barbarian (2022)

Cash your ticket if you had a member of The Whitest Kids U’ Know crafting one of the best horror movies of the last five years. Zach Cregger surprised audiences in 2022 with Barbarian, a horror movie set at a rental home in Detroit. Tess Marshall (Georgina Campbell) is surprised to find Keith (Bill Skarsgård) staying at her Airbnb.

Despite her instincts telling her to leave, Tess spends the night with Keith. The next morning, things go off the rails. For fear of spoilers, I’ll stop there. Barbarian is a movie that you must see to believe. The twist is less effective the second time around, but if this is your first time, enjoy the madness.

    Stream Barbarian on Tubi.

Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation (2015)

It’s Mission: Impossible month in Hollywood, as audiences everywhere prepare for Tom Cruise to entertain them as Ethan Hunt one last time in Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning. As part of your rewatch, 2015’s Rogue Nation should be on your list. After the death of a station operative, the Senate decommissions the IMF and forces its employees to join the CIA.

Ethan refuses and goes on the run as he hopes to track down The Syndicate, a nefarious organization that threatens the global powers. Now a fugitive, Ethan recruits his old team and Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson) to join him in his hunt to destroy this rogue nation. To trigger your memory, Rogue Nation is when Ethan hangs off the side of a plane.

Stream Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation for free on Pluto TV.

    Escape Room (2019)

Final Destination Bloodlines is a franchise built on insane death scenes. These unfathomable sequences are like Rube Goldberg machines for murder. While Escape Room does not feature the violence of Final Destination, the elaborate life-or-death situations are something the two movies have in common.

Six strangers are invited to take part in an escape room challenge. If the players complete the tasks, they will win $10,000. Once the first challenge begins, the group quickly realizes failure to complete a mission will result in physical harm, with death being one of the possibilities. Starring Taylor Russell and Logan Miller, Escape Room is a brisk and entertaining 100-minute thriller specifically made for people who love to solve puzzles.

  • 3 great Hulu movies you need to stream this weekend (May 16 – 18)

Next weekend, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is probably going to be the action movie of the summer. So there’s no better time than to revisit the first five films in the franchise on Hulu. But only one of those flicks is among the three great Hulu movies that you need to stream this weekend.

This week’s other selections include a dark drama/thriller as well as a recently premiered Hulu original comedy movie. With selections like these, you can put off going to a movie theater for at least another weekend.

Need more recommendations? We also have guides to the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on Max, and the best movies on Disney+.

Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015)

It’s hard to believe that Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation came out only a decade ago, as it marked a turning point in the long-running film franchise. Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt has had to go rogue before, but this time there was no Impossible Mission Force to go back to after being declared a traitor and a terrorist. The reality is that Ethan got too close to a secretive terrorist organization known as The Syndicate, and it tried to destroy him.

Ethan’s life is spared by Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson), a Syndicate operative who has been officially disavowed by MI6. Unofficially, Ilsa is deep undercover and trying to bring down the Syndicate from within. It’s a dangerous spot to be in, and she needs Ethan’s help just as much as he needs hers. It would be a match made in Heaven if their lives weren’t constantly on the line.

Watch Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation on Hulu.

    Trust (2010)

Friends star David Schwimmer directed Trust, a dark thriller starring Clive Owen and Catherine Keener as Will and Lynn Cameron. The Camerons’ world is shattered when their 14-year-old daughter, Annie (Liana Liberato), is seduced online by a much older man (Chris Henry Coffey) who lures her to a mall and then a hotel before molesting her.

Annie initially hides the encounter from her parents because she still believes that the older man loves her, but when the truth comes out, Will becomes obsessed with finding her rapist. It becomes so all-consuming to Will that he constantly replays the incident in his mind. The pressure Will puts on Annie causes her to spiral even further out of control.

    Watch Trust on Hulu.

    Summer of 69 (2025)

The title of the new Hulu original movie Summer of 69 may suggest a flashback film, but the number has a different connotation in the context of the movie. This is a comedy about the unlikely friendship between a teenager named Abby Flores (Sam Morelos) and a stripper who calls herself Santa Monica (Chloe Fineman). Abby is desperately in love with her friend, Max Warren (Matt Cornett), so she hires Santa Monica to help her get the confidence she needs to romantically pursue him.

Santa Monica likes Abby, but she’s not helping her out of the goodness of her heart. She needs the astronomically high money that Abby promised to save her job at the strip club and pursue her dream of becoming the co-owner. But she and Abby may be very disappointed when their ambitions seem very out of reach.
