  • Revenge of the Sith is the most underrated Star Wars movie, even by those who have come to appreciate it

The past five years have been a firm reminder of the power of nostalgia. Following the disappointing reception of the Star Wars sequel trilogy, some individuals began to view the prequels with greater fondness. Suddenly, movies that were mostly about failed trade negotiations and how terrible the Jedi actually were at their jobs started looking better and better.

That was especially true for Revenge of the Sith, the Star Wars movie that was received most warmly upon its release. In the 20 years since its release, though, Revenge of the Sith, and specifically that movie’s politics, has only become more relevant. It’s a movie about what it’s like to watch an entire political order fall and how much easier it is to let that happen than it might seem. Here are three reasons Revenge of the Sith continues to resonate today.

It’s the most overtly political Star Wars movie

Star Wars has always been political, but those politics are often more suggestions than anything concrete. The Rebels are the Vietcong, and the Empire is America, but none of that is stated explicitly.

That is not the case in Revenge of the Sith, a movie that, if anything, is too blunt about its worldview. This is a film where disinformation leads to the destruction of the Galactic Republic and its replacement with a Galactic Empire. It’s one in which Natalie Portman’s Padme Amidala explicitly points out that democracy has died, and the response is “thunderous applause.” Anakin Skywalker says, “If you’re not with me, you’re my enemy.”

Revenge of the Sith is operatic and blunt, but it’s a movie about democracy so decadent and self-absorbed that it becomes subject to the whims of a master manipulator.

Hayden Christensen is better in it than you remember

The backlash against Hayden Christensen’s Anakin Skywalker was swift and severe, but much of the stuff you remember comes from Attack of the Clones. In this installment, Christiansen seems to understand Anakin’s desperation to save Padme and how torn he eventually becomes as he becomes disillusioned with the Jedi. It’s a performance that definitely goes big in moments, but crucially, one that also lands many of the movie’s biggest scenes.

When Anakin is alone on a balcony in Coruscant, and you watch a single tear drift down his cheek, you come to understand just how much the events of the movie are tearing him apart. Christensen is playing a hero who becomes a villain, and he acquits himself better than you might remember.

John Williams goes on an absolute tear

Perhaps the most important reason for the success of Revenge of the Sith and of Star Wars generally is the continued greatness of John Williams. Although he’s just adding to his most iconic themes in Revenge of the Sith, he manages to write one piece of new music that feels genuinely elegiac. Anakin vs. Obi-Wan, which plays over the final confrontation between these former friends, is sweeping, sad, and beautiful in a way that the best Star Wars songs always are.

Just as importantly, Williams does some of his more unsettling work on this soundtrack, reminding us explicitly of Anakin’s journey into darkness. Revenge of the Sith is a movie about succumbing to the darkness, and Williams knows exactly how to meet that musical moment.

  • Hayden Christensen gets ready for Revenge of the Sith anniversary in hilarious new video

It wouldn’t be Revenge of the Sith without Hayden Christensen. In a hilarious new video, the Star Wars actor heads to a movie theater to purchase a ticket for the Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith 20th anniversary.

“One ticket, please,” Christensen tells the theater employee. When she asks what movie, the video turns to Christensen, who appears with a Star Wars popcorn bucket and a Darth Vader drink as The Imperial March plays in the background.

Tickets are now on sale at Fandango.com in select U.S. and international theaters, including AMC, Alamo Drafthouse, B&B, Cinemark, Fandango, Galaxy, Harkins, Marcus, Megaplex, and Regal Showcase. For the first time ever, fans can experience Revenge of the Sith in 4DX in certain theaters.

The Revenge of the Sith rerelease showings will begin on April 24 in the afternoon and evening. The movie will remain in theaters for one week.

Christensen joined the prequel franchise as Anakin Skywalker in Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones. Anakin is the Padawan apprentice to Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor). In Revenge of the Sith, Anakin completes his transformation to the dark side by aligning with Emperor Palpatine and becoming a Sith Lord named Darth Vader.

George Lucas’ prequel trilogy is widely considered inferior to the original trilogy. In the years following their release, there has been a critical examination with the prequels, especially Revenge of the Sith, which remains the strongest and most beloved of the prequels.

After a nearly 20-year hiatus from Star Wars, Christensen reprised his role in two Disney+ series: Obi-Wan Kenobi and Ahsoka season 1. At Star Wars Celebration Japan 2025, Lucasfilm announced Christensen will return as Darth Vader in Ahsoka season 2.

If you can’t make it to the theater, Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith is now streaming on Disney+.

  • New poster, tickets on sale for Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith 20th anniversary

Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith returns to theaters later this month for a special 20th anniversary rerelease.

Revenge of the Sith will be released in select U.S. and international theaters for one week only beginning April 25. Tickets are now on sale at Fandango.com. Theater chains showing the film include AMC, Alamo Drafthouse, B&B, Cinemark, Fandango, Galaxy, Harkins, Marcus, Megaplex, and Regal Showcase. Fans can see Revenge of the Sith in various formats, including 4DX.

Lucasfilm also released a new poster for Episode III. Created by graphic artist Matt Ferguson, the poster features Anakin Skywalker marching to execute Order 66. Behind Anakin is Darth Vader’s mask, while his famous lightsaber duel with Obi-Wan Kenobi stands above the title.

Revenge of the Sith is the final film in the prequel trilogy. Written and directed by George Lucas, the movie is set three years after the onset of the Clone Wars. Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) continues to train under Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor). Their relationship is strained when Anakin becomes closer to Chancellor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid). Meanwhile, Padmé Amidala, Anakin’s wife, whom he secretly married at the end of Attack of the Clones, is pregnant with twins.

Revenge of the Sith depicts the Republic’s fall and the rise of the Galactic Empire. More importantly, Anakin completes his turn to the dark side and becomes Emperor Palpatine’s new apprentice, Darth Vader.

Episode III also stars Frank Oz, Jimmy Smits, Peter Mayhew, Ahmed Best, Oliver Ford Davies, Temuera Morrison, Anthony Daniels, Silas Carson, Kenny Baker, Samuel L. Jackson, and Christopher Lee.

Though financially successful, the prequel trilogy was much maligned upon its release. However, Revenge of the Sith is widely considered the best entry in the trilogy.
