    Kicking and Screaming (1995)

For his feature directorial debut, Noah Baumbach tackled the anxiety and fears of recent college graduates in Kicking and Screaming. Grover (Josh Hamilton) dreams of being a writer, but when his girlfriend (Olivia d’Abo) leaves for Prague, he feels stuck in the mud.

Grover now spends most of his days hanging with other slackers, including Max (Chris Eigeman). The guys all know adulthood is inevitable; they’re just unsure how to face it. Kicking and Screaming is a must-watch for twentysomethings who are petrified of the “real world.”

    Trainwreck (2015)

Amy Schumer plays a woman afraid of commitment in the aptly titled Trainwreck. Amy Townsend (Schumer) is a promiscuous partier who has no faith in monogamy. Amy is a self-saboteur — anyone who comes close to her, she will inevitably push away.

Then, Amy meets sports doctor Aaron Conners (Bill Hader), and things begin to change. She’s falling in love with Aaron while panicking at the same time. Is she capable of love? This is the star-making performance that turned Schumer into a household name.

  • 3 rom-coms on Netflix you need to watch in May 2025

Sofia Carson is quickly becoming one of Netflix’s most valuable stars. Carson first proved her worth in Purple Hearts, the romantic drama that became the streamer’s third most watched movie of 2022. Carry-On, a thriller with Carson and Taron Edgerton, is Netflix’s second most popular English-language movie ever. Now, Carson has The Life List, the romantic dramedy that has spent five consecutive weeks in the top 10.

If you haven’t seen The Life List, rom-com fans should put it in their queue. Otherwise, watch one of the three rom-coms below, including a baseball drama, a Ryan Gosling-led comedy, and a charming story about an engagement.

We also have guides to the best new movies to stream, the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on Max, and the best movies on Disney+.

For Love of the Game (1999)

How can you not be romantic about baseball? Sam Raimi — yes, the same director behind The Evil Dead and Spider-Man franchises — explored a love story told through baseball in For Love of the Game. Aging pitcher Billy Chapel (Kevin Costner) is on his last legs. The Detroit Tigers plans to trade Chapel after his final start against the New York Yankees.

While on the mound, Billy reflects on the relationship with his girlfriend, Jane Aubrey (Kelly Preston), the love of his life who plans to leave him for a job in London. Billy is so distracted by his thoughts about Jane that he doesn’t realize the perfect game he’s pitching until the bottom of the eighth inning. Can Billy finish the job? Frankly, does the game even matter if he can’t share his success with Jane?

    Crazy, Stupid, Love (2011)

Crazy, Stupid, Love maximizes its charming, attractive, and talented cast to its benefit. Written by Paradise’s Dan Fogelman, Crazy, Stupid, Love follows Cal Weaver (Steve Carrell), a middle-aged man who’s shell-shocked to learn that his wife, Emily (Julianne Moore), had an affair and wants a divorce.

Depressed, Cal tries to get back into the dating market. Cal’s attempts at attracting women go so poorly that they catch the attention of the handsome womanizer, Jacob Palmer (Ryan Gosling). Under Jacob’s tutelage, Cal learns the art of picking up women. For a lovely rom-com, Crazy, Stupid, Love still has one of the best plot twists in any genre of the past 15 years.

    The Five-Year Engagement (2012)

Couples in serious relationships can probably relate to the drama at the center of The Five-Year Engagement. Sous chef Tom Solomon (Jason Segel) and his PhD graduate girlfriend Violet (Emily Blunt) are engaged. However, their engagement transforms into a curse-like situation.

Every time the couple plans to tie the knot, something happens to derail their plans. This leads to a breaking point where regret and doubt seep into their relationship. Even though things fall apart, you’re rooting for Tom and Violet to make it work because of the soothing chemistry between Segel and Blunt.

  • 3 rom-coms on Netflix you need to watch in April 2025

Romance continues to be one of the most popular genres on Netflix. One of our recommendations this month happens to be a new release, The Life List. Since its debut on March 28, The Life List has remained in the top 10 for most popular movies on Netflix. Frankly, it will likely stay on that list for a few weeks.

That’s only one of many rom-coms to watch on Netflix. There are two more recommendations below. Admittedly, one is more drama than comedy. The other is an iconic, raunchy rom-com. All three movies are worth your time.

We also have guides to the best movies to stream this week, the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on Maxand the best movies on Disney+.

    The Life List (2025)

A girl holds a book on a seat.
    Nicole Rivelli / Netflix

The Life List is part rom-com and part quarter-life crisis. Alex (Carry-On’s Sofia Carson) was once an aspirational kid. Unfortunately, she forgot about her dreams once she hit adulthood. After her mother dies of cancer (Connie Britton), Alex learns that the will has a major stipulation: Alex must complete the bucket list she made as a teenager. If Alex completes it, she will receive her inheritance.

What does a 13-year-old’s bucket list look like? Some of the list includes a one-on-one basketball game, an open mic night, and a trip to her childhood home. The more activities she crosses off, the more Alex realizes how much she has lost herself over the years. This list is a chance for rediscovery and, much to her surprise, a shot at love.

    Pride & Prejudice (2005)

Pride & Prejudice – 20th Anniversary Release Official Trailer – Only in Theaters April 20

Pride & Prejudice is a romance with more drama than comedy. Is it a rom-com? Probably not, but hey, the movie is about to get rereleased for the 20th anniversary, so why not talk about it? The best Pride & Prejudice adaptation belongs to Joe Wright, who took the iconic Jane Austen novel and made Keira Knightley an Oscar nominee thanks to her excellent portrayal of Elizabeth “Lizzy” Bennet.

Elizabeth and her four sisters face pressure from their overbearing parents to find a suitable husband. Elizabeth, the most straightforward out of the group, wants to marry for love, not for wealth or social status. When she meets Mr. Darcy (Matthew Macfadyen), Elizabeth has her reservations. Over time, Elizabeth starts to see Darcy’s true colors, culminating in an iconic scene that will warm your heart.

    Wedding Crashers (2005)

Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn in a wedding party in Wedding Crashers.
    New Line Cinema

The raunchy rom-com is a thing of the past. However, Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson might have headlined the greatest entry into the genre back in 2005 with Wedding Crashers. For single friends Jeremy (Vaughn) and John (Wilson), the best time of the year is wedding season. It’s like Christmas, and their presents are women.

The secret to the duo’s success is to crash wedding receptions and prey upon vulnerable women. It works nearly every time. Jeremy and John plan to pull off the ultimate crash at a wedding hosted by the Secretary of the Treasury, William Cleary (Christopher Walken). The boys didn’t plan to fall in love with Cleary’s other daughters, Gloria (Isla Fisher) and Claire (Rachel McAdams). The crashers must play like champions to get out of this mess.
