  • Avengers: Doomsday begins filming as Russo Brothers tease photo of Doctor Doom

The Avengers have assembled in London for their next outing. Filming has begun on Avengers: Doomsday, and the Russo Brothers took to social media to tease the film’s infamous villain.

“Day One…” the Russo Brothers wrote on Instagram with a photo of a chair that reads, “Victor Von Doom.” The chair is in the spirit of the Doomsday casting announcement, which was also done by showing the actors’ names on a chair. The chair of Victor Von Doom belongs to Robert Downey Jr., who will play Doctor Doom in the next two Avengers movies.

Downey and the Russo Brothers exited Marvel after 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. Downey’s Iron Man stole the Infinity Stones to execute the snap to defeat Thanos and his army. While this move saved the world, it killed Iron Man.

After Endgame, the Russo Brothers directed Cherry, The Gray Man, and The Electric State. The brotherly duo produced Citadel, Prime Video’s global espionage action series. Downey and the Russo Brothers announced their triumphant return to the MCU at 2024’s San Diego Comic-Con.

Like most Avengers films, Doomsday has a large ensemble cast of superheroes and villains. The announced cast features Chris Hemsworth, Vanessa Kirby, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright, Paul Rudd, Wyatt Russell, Tenoch Huerta Mejía, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Simu Liu, Florence Pugh, Lewis Pullman, Danny Ramirez, Joseph Quinn, David Harbour, Winston Duke, Hannah John-Kamen, Tom Hiddleston, and Pedro Pascal.

The biggest reveals so far involved the inclusion of the X-Men from the 20th Century Fox movies. This includes Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier/Professor X, Ian McKellen as Erik Lensherr/Magneto, Alan Cumming as Kurt Wagner/Nightcrawler, Rebecca Romijn as Raven Darkhölme/Mystique, James Marsden as Scott Summers/Cyclops, Channing Tatum as Remy LeBeau/Gambit, and Kelsey Grammer as Hank McCoy/Beast.

Tom Holland, who plays Peter Parker/Spider-Man, is noticeably absent from the cast. Holland will return to the MCU for his fourth solo outing in Spider-Man: Brand New Day two months after Doomsday in July 2026. If Holland does not show up in Doomsday, he’ll likely play a major role in Avengers: Secret Wars.

Avengers: Doomsday opens in theaters on May 1, 2026.

  • The Russo brothers were initially ‘resistant’ to directing the next two ‘Avengers’ movies

The Russo brothers have done more for Marvel than basically any other directors, but the duo were initially reluctant to return to Marvel for Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. The directors behind Infinity War and Endgame said that they initially turned down the offer to direct the next two Avengers movies, even though it would mean reuniting with Robert Downey Jr.

While speaking with Omelete, Joe Russo said that Downey Jr. was already attached to return, and that he was the one who made the initial overture to them.

“Then Robert tried to talk us into doing [ Doomsday and Secret Wars] and we said ‘no,’” Joe Russo said. “We just didn’t have a story. We didn’t have a way in. We were resistant for a while.”

Stephen McFeely, who co-wrote the last two Avengers movies and is a close collaborator of the Russos, was the one who ultimately cracked the story and convinced the Russos they should return for both movies.

“One day, Stephen McFeely, one of our chief collaborators, said, ‘I have an idea,’” Joe Russo added. “We went, ‘That’s the story!’ That story has to be told; it’s a really powerful story!”

The Russos of course did not disclose exactly what that story might be, and we still know remarkably little about what Doomsday and Secret Wars are actually about. Doomsday is set hit theaters on May 1, 2026, and Secret Wars on May 7, 2027, closely mirroring the release dates for Infinity War and Endgame, which went on to set box office records. Marvel is clearly hoping that Doomsday and Secret Wars will be similarly successful.

  • Behind the scenes of The Electric State

Anthony and Joe Russo’s new sci-fi adventure film, The Electric State, is adapted from the graphic novel by Swedish artist/designer Simon Stålenhag. So naturally the directors wanted to create their own distinctive look and tone—complete with a colorful array of quirky misfit robots who team up with their human counterparts to take down an evil corporation.

(Some spoilers below but no major reveals.)

The Electric State is Stålenhag’s third book, published in 2018. Like much of work, it’s set in a dystopian, ravaged landscape: a reimagined America in an alternate 1990s where a war between robots and humans has devastated the country. Paragraphs of text, accompanied by larger artworks, tell the story of a teen girl named Michelle (Milly Bobby Brown) who must travel across the country with her robot companion, Cosmo (Alan Tudyk), to find her long-lost genius brother, Christopher (Woody Norman), while being pursued by a federal agent (Giancarlo Esposito).
