  • Mia Goth cast opposite Ryan Gosling in Star Wars: Starfighter

    Welcome to the Star Wars universe, Mia Goth.

    Per The InSneider newsletter, Goth has been cast in Star Wars: Starfighter. Goth joins Ryan Gosling in the upcoming space opera from director Shawn Levy.

    Much of the plot and character details are under wraps. However, The Hollywood Reporter reports that Gosling will play a character who must protect his young nephew against evil pursuers. Goth will portray one of the villainous pursuers.

    Levy will direct from a screenplay by Your Friends & Neighbors creator Jonathan Tropper. Filming is expected to begin this fall.

    Goth is reportedly playing the role that was once eyed by Oscar winner Mikey Madison, who had discussions about playing the villain in Levy’s Starfighter. Ultimately, the Anora star walked away after a pay dispute.

    Lucasfilm announced Star Wars: Starfighter in April at the Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo. Star Wars: Starfighter will be its own movie, one that’s not connected to the Skywalker Saga. It will be set roughly five years after the events of Star Wars: Episode IX — The Rise of Skywalker and feature a group of new characters.

    “This is a standalone,” Levy said during the official announcement. “It’s not a prequel, not a sequel. It’s a new adventure. It’s set in a period of time that we haven’t seen explored yet.”

    Goth rose to prominence in Ti West’s X film series, which includes X, Pearl, and MaXXXine. Goth is one of the stars of Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, which arrives on Netflix in November. Goth will play Elizabeth Lavenza, the fiancée of Oscar Isaac’s Victor. Next year, Goth can be seen in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey.

    Lucasfilm has not released a Star Wars theatrical film since 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker. Several filmmakers have been attached to future Star Wars movies, including Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, James Mangold, and Lucasfilm chief creative officer Dave Filoni. None of those movies have entered production.

    The theatrical drought for Star Wars ends next summer when The Mandalorian and Grogu opens on May 22, 2026.

    Star Wars: Starfighter hits theaters on May 28, 2027.

  • Shawn Levy and Ryan Gosling’s Star Wars film is coming in 2027

    It’s been an open secret for a while that Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy is preparing his own Star Wars movie. What we didn’t realize was this project will leap over most of the other Star Wars movies and land a release date near the 50th anniversary of the franchise. At Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo, Lucasfilm officially announced Levy’s film and confirmed that Barbie‘s Ryan Gosling will headline Star Wars: Starfighter.

    The original Star Wars hit theaters on May 25, 1977. Starfighter will arrive 50 years and three days later on May 28, 2027. Production will begin this fall. Levy and Gosling both appeared on stage in Tokyo during the announcement. Levy also indicated that the story will be set five years after The Rise of Skywalker, but it’s not a direct sequel to that film.

    Gosling added that “this script is just so good. It has such a great story with great and original characters. It’s filled with so much heart and adventure, and there just really is not a more perfect filmmaker for this particular story than Shawn.”

    Levy was reportedly in contention for Avengers: Doomsday before the Russo brothers returned to helm that film and its sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars. Now, Doomsday will hit theaters just a few weeks before Starfighter. Avengers: Infinity War and Solo: A Star Wars Story were both released within weeks of each other in May 2018, and only the former was a hit.

    During Celebration, Lucasfilm also confirmed that Simon Kinberg’s new trilogy remains in development alongside movies by Dave Filoni, James Mangold, Donald Glover, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, and Taika Waititi.

    Miami Blues (1990)

    Alec Baldwin was never the A-list movie star he probably could have been, and it’s in part because he took on roles like Miami Blues. In the film, Baldwin plays a sociopathic criminal who becomes romantically involved with a prostitute.

    He then assumes the identity of a police officer and goes on a crime spree. All the while, he’s trying to convince his new love that everything is fine. Miami Blues is demented, hilarious, and dark in ways that movies rarely get to be anymore. Of all the movies to ape the style of the Coen brothers in this era, Miami Blues is one of the very best.

    10 Cloverfield Lane (2016)

    This sideways sequel to Cloverfield, 10 Cloverfield Lane, follows a young woman who wakes up in a bunker after what she’s been told is some sort of apocalyptic event. As she bonds with the two men she’s trapped with, she begins to suspect that the older one (John Goodman) is more sinister than he appears.

    The movie’s slow-drip tension culminates in a stunning climax, but part of what makes 10 Cloverfield Lane so good is that it doesn’t feel like a Cloverfield sequel at all. It’s an entirely different kind of movie, and that’s part of what makes it so exciting.

    Half Nelson (2006)

    The movie that definitively proved that Ryan Gosling has the juice, Half Nelson, tells the story of a middle school teacher who bonds with one of his students as he continues to nurse a heroin addiction.

    The movie, which is quiet, observational, and never preachy, manages to avoid the cliches that define most movies about teachers and their students. Instead, Half Nelson is about two people trying to survive their circumstances and help one another when they can. Gosling is brilliant, subtle, and devastating.
