  • Brett Goldstein equates Ted Lasso season 4 with bringing a cat back to life

Apple TV+’s breakout comedy Ted Lasso was supposedly going to end after three seasons. But amid rumors of another season to come, Apple TV+ officially ordered Ted Lasso season 4 last month with series co-creator Jason Sudeikis reprising his title role once again. Brett Goldstein will also be back as Roy Kent, and he recently made an unusual analogy about the return of the series that may sound like it was lifted from Stephen King’s Pet Sematary. But according to Goldstein, it was something that happened to a friend of his.

Via Deadline, Goldstein shared the story during an appearance on the Wild Card podcast. “I have a friend that I went to university with, and I think about this a lot,” said Goldstein. “He had a cat that died. He loved his cat, and the cat was run over, and they buried the cat… And he was a child. They buried the cat in the garden, and he lay in bed so sad, so upset and crying, and he prayed and he prayed and he wished. ‘I wish the cat would come back.’ And then the cat did come back, and it turned out the cat they buried wasn’t their cat… And so, I’m like, no wonder this guy is f***ed in the head, because he thinks death isn’t real, so of course he’s insane. He’s such a weird guy, cause he thinks he can bring things back from the dead.”

“I guess I’m saying I feel like that kid,” added Goldstein. “Like ‘We buried [Ted Lasso]… We all cried, we had a funeral. Are you saying we can bring anything back?’ It’s too much power.”

Of course, if the fourth season of Ted Lasso fails to live up to the first three, another Pet Sematary reference may be appropriate: “Sometimes dead is better.”

A recent report suggested that Ted Lasso is recasting the role of Ted’s son, Henry, who was previously played by Gus Turner. Besides Goldstein and Sudeikis, Hannah Waddingham will return as Rebecca Walton alongside Jeremy Swift as Leslie Higgins.

Apple TV+ hasn’t set a premiere window for Ted Lasso season 4 yet.

  • Ted Lasso is recasting this supporting role for season 4

Last week, Apple TV+ confirmed what had been rumored for months: Ted Lasso will return for season 4. A handful of original cast members are already set to come back, including series co-creator Jason Sudeikis as Ted Lasso himself. However, one key supporting role close to Ted is being recast for the fourth season.

According to Deadline, the series is now searching for a young actor to play Ted’s son, Henry, who was previously portrayed by Gus Turner across the first three seasons. Because Henry lived in the United States with his mother, he only had limited screentime in the show’s original run. For season 4, Henry is being given a larger role now that his father is back in Kansas. Deadline’s report indicates that Henry has become a skilled soccer player at only 12 years old. He’s also “inherited some of his father’s quirks.”

Although Turner has been invited to audition for the role that was once his, it’s possible that Henry’s newfound soccer skills may be a key trait for whoever plays the part going forward. It’s also currently unclear if Andrea Anders will reprise her role as Henry’s mother — and Ted’s ex-wife — Michelle.

What we do know is that Hannah Waddingham will return as Rebecca Walton, alongside Brett Goldstein as Roy Kent, and Jeremy Swift as Leslie Higgins. The options for that trio were picked up last year, well before the show’s return was official. Shortly after that happened, Sudeikis shared that he felt good about the series’ then-potential comeback.

Juno Temple is reportedly in talks to rejoin the cast as well, as is Brendan Hunt, one of the other co-creators on the series. Hunt has already been involved with the fourth season as a writer and an executive producer, but he doesn’t currently have an acting deal to reprise his role as Coach Beard.

Apple TV+ hasn’t set a date for Ted Lasso season 4 yet.

    • Apple TV+ has officially renewed “Ted Lasso” for a fourth season.
    • The show’s future was uncertain after the season three finale, which aired in 2023.
    • Jason Sudeikis will return to the show. The rest of the cast has yet to be announced.

It’s been almost two years since the season three finale of “Ted Lasso” aired.

But AFC Richmond fans now have a reason to celebrate once again, as Apple TV+ announced earlier this week that the Emmy-winning comedy will be back for a fourth season, with star Jason Sudeikis returning in the titular role.

“‘Ted Lasso’ has been nothing short of a juggernaut, inspiring a passionate fanbase all over the world, and delivering endless joy and laughter, all while spreading kindness, compassion and unwavering belief,” Matt Cherniss, head of programming for Apple TV+, said in a statement announcing the show’s return. “Everyone at Apple is thrilled to be continuing our collaboration with Jason and the brilliant creative minds behind this show.”

Here’s everything we know about the upcoming series.

Right now, only one returning cast member has been confirmed

Sudeikis, who also serves as an executive producer on the show, shared a rather Lasso-like statement while confirming his return.

“We all continue to live in a world where so many factors have conditioned us to ‘look before we leap,” Sudeikis said in a press release. “In Season 4, the folks at AFC Richmond learn to leap before they look, discovering that wherever they land, it’s exactly where they’re meant to be.”

Brendan Hunt and Brett Goldstein will return as executive producers — with Goldstein also continuing to serve as a cowriter on the series — but it’s not been confirmed whether they will also be back as cast members Beard and Roy Kent.

It’s also not known whether the rest of the show’s beloved ensemble, which includes Hannah Waddingham, Juno Temple, Nick Mohammed, and Phil Dunster, will reprise their roles.

However, one addition has been announced to the creative team. Jack Burditt, a TV producer who worked on the Netflix hit “Nobody Wants This,” will join as an executive producer as part of a new overall deal with Apple TV+.

Season four will shift focus to a women’s football team, Sudeikis has said

Sudeikis spoke about the new season on an episode of the “New Heights” podcast — hosted by former Philadelphia Eagles star Jason Kelce and his brother, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce — on Friday.

“We’re writing season four now,” Sudeikis said. “That’s the official word. Ted’s coaching a women’s team.”

When pushed for more details, including whether the new season would see his character come back to the US, Sudeikis said: “That’s too many questions,” adding: “I don’t know.”

The season three finale saw Ted return home to Kansas

“Ted Lasso,” which debuted in 2020, became one of AppleTV+’s most-streamed shows over its initial three-season run.

The season three finale — which many believed was the closing chapter — aired in May 2023. While it was not officially billed as a show finale, it wrapped up many major storylines and saw Ted return home to Kansas to be closer to his son (Gus Turner).

Apple TV+ has not yet announced a premiere date for the new season and did not respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.

  • It’s true, Ted Lasso is returning for a fourth season

When Ted Lasso’s third season ended in May 2023, the main character had left his beloved AFC Richmond team in England and returned to the U.S. to be with his son, Henry. It was a fitting end for a series finale, which many assumed it was. Nearly two years later, series star Jason Sudeikis announced that Ted Lasso would return to Apple TV+ for a fourth season.

Speaking to the New Heights podcast (via The Radio Times), Sudeikis says the fourth installment will see his character coaching a women’s team. Whether that’s a soccer team in the U.S. or a football team in Europe remains to be seen. Even Sudeikis doesn’t know the stories for the fourth season or where those stories will be set.

At the end of season three, Sudeikis’ character was firmly established in the U.S.. In contrast, the show’s other characters remained in the U.K. This included Hannah Waddingham’s Rebecca, Brett Goldstein’s Roy Kent, and Juno Temple’s Keeley Jones. Even Brendan Hunt’s American Coach Beard was still across the pond when the show last aired.

When Ted Lasso ended, most assumed the series was gone forever. At the minimum, some felt a spin-off series was on the table. Eventually, “rumblings” started that the show would return, assumingly with its original stars, which is where we are now.

Ted Lasso premiered in August 2020. Over three years, the series has won several Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Comedy Series in its first two years and Outstanding Lead Actor for Jason Sudeikis twice. Brett Goldstein and Hannah Waddingham have also received Emmys, with Goldstein winning twice.

With Sudeikis confirmed for season four of Ted Lasso, it likely won’t be long before we find out who else will be joining the cast for the new season. When the new episodes will be filmed and aired isn’t yet known.
