  • 3 great Max crime dramas you should watch in April 2025

If you’ve ever scrolled through Max, you’re likely aware that the streamer’s catalog of movies is fairly extensive. Because Max doesn’t have the most impressive algorithm, though, a lot of those movies are totally buried, even if you know what you’re looking for.

Looking for crime movies on Max that are actually worth your time can be deeply frustrating, which is why we’ve made the job a little bit easier. We’ve pulled together 3 great crime dramas that are all available on Max and all worth your time this month. Whatever you’re looking for, you’ll hopefully find something worth enjoying here.

We also have guides to the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on Maxand the best movies on Disney+.

    The Accountant (2016)

One of the surprise cult hits of 2016, The Accountant stars Ben Affleck as a freelance criminal accountant who makes most of his money working for dirty organizations. When he takes on a legitimate client and begins to suspect that they’re hiding something, the body count starts to rise, and we begin to see that numbers aren’t the only thing this awkward guy is good at.

Although it’s one of Affleck’s strangest lead performances, The Accountant is undeniably effective. It’s a tight, coherent action movie about the biggest crooks in America and the dude on the spectrum who’s willing to take them down.

You can watch The Accountant on Max.

    The Bling Ring (2013)

Sofia Coppola’s retelling of the story of the fame-obsessed teenagers who began to rob the houses of the rich and famous received mixed reviews when it was first released. In the decade since, though, the movie has only come to feel like a more accurate reflection of a culture that prioritizes wealth and fame above everything else.

The Bling Ring also features the best performance of Emma Watson’s career as Nicki, the group’s ringleader and a young woman who knows exactly what she wants, even if those desires make her the villain.

You can watch The Bling Ring on Max.

    High and Low (1963)

One of the greatest crime thrillers ever made, High and Low tells the story of a wealthy Japanese businessman dealing with a kidnapping. When his chauffeur’s son is taken instead of his own, he has to decide whether to pay the ransom. As the kidnapping plot continues to unfold, the movie examines the way class structures Japanese society and just how completely the driver is at his boss’s mercy.

Surprisingly taut and brisk despite its two-and-a-half-hour runtime, High and Low is one of several genuine masterpieces from director Akira Kurosawa and one you should definitely check out, whether you like old Japanese movies or not.

You can watch High and Low on Max.

  • Ben Affleck, Jon Bernthal play reunited brothers in The Accountant 2 trailer

Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal form a brotherly tag team in the trailer for The Accountant 2.

After the events of The Accountant, Christian Wolff (Affleck) continues to travel the country while living in his airstream trailer. Christian even tries speed dating, though that doesn’t go so well. Christian, aka The Accountant, still uses his mathematical genius to launder money for some of the top criminals in the world.

Raymond King (J.K. Simmons), Christian’s old contact in the Treasury Department, is tragically murdered. While examining the body, King had “Find the Accountant” written on his arm. U.S. Treasury Deputy Director Marybeth Medina (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) recruits Christian to investigate King’s murder and find the killers.

This case can’t be solved strictly with numbers. Christian needs more muscle. Enter his brother, Braxton (Jon Bernthal), a highly trained mercenary. Together, the brothers uncover a network of killers that must be stopped. The action-packed trailer ends with Christian and Brax executing a two-man ambush as they kill everyone in their path.

Daniella Pineda and Allison Robertson also star.

Gavin O’Connor returns to direct The Accountant 2 from a screenplay by Bill Dubuque. O’Connor and Affleck have now collaborated on three films: The Accountant, The Way Back, and The Accountant 2.

Released in 2016, The Accountant was a surprise hit, grossing over $155 million on a budget of $44 million.

Amazon MGM Studios will release The Accountant 2 in theaters on April 25, 2025. Fans can see the movie early on April 15 with exclusive Tax Day screenings. Tickets are now available on the film’s official website.

  • 3 underrated movies on Amazon Prime Video you need to watch in April 2025

Glenn Close and a haggard looking Mila Kunis sit in a waiting room in Four Good Days.
    Vertical Entertainment

Looking for a classic movie to watch on a lazy day or night? With so many great movies coming out, sometimes it’s nice to look back and rewatch something you loved from your past. In some cases, it might have been a movie you always meant to watch but never got around to.

The three underrated movies on Amazon Prime Video you need to watch in April 2025 are ones you might have heard of and that received their fair share of praise, but are easy to have missed. The casts are top-notch, however, and the stories are riveting in each one.

Need more recommendations? Then check out the best new movies to stream this week, the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on Max, and the best movies on Disney+.

    The Accountant (2016)

Ben Affleck stars in this action thriller as Christian Wolff, an autistic man who works to sanitize financial records for some of the biggest criminal and terrorist organizations around the world. After being hired to audit a robotics company, Christian uncovers serious embezzlement, which puts his life in danger.

The Accountant earned mixed reviews, receiving criticism largely for its portrayal of autism. However, the martial arts sequences and compelling story make The Accountant one to watch. Our reviewer calls it exciting and tense, loving the plot twists throughout. It’s especially worth watching now that a sequel is set to premiere on Amazon Prime Video later this month, with Affleck, Jon Bernthal, Cynthia Addai-Ribonson, and J.K. Simmons all reprising their roles.

    Secretary (2002)

While Secretary might come across as tone-deaf in today’s climate with the increased attention on the mistreatment of women, there’s something deeply fascinating about the erotic romantic comedy-drama. James Spader is E. Edward Gray, an eccentric attorney who hires a socially awkward young woman named Lee (Maggie Gyllenhaal) to work as his secretary. But the working relationship becomes complicated when E. Edward is sexually aroused by Lee’s subservient behavior. He uses this desire, however, to order Lee to stop harming herself, an act that previously landed her in a mental hospital.

What makes Secretary more palatable to those who might otherwise find it unsettling is that the BDSM relationship that occurs between the two is seemingly consensual. Each develops their sense of self through the experience, with Lee ironically finding a confidence she never had and E. Edward experiencing feelings of insecurity and shame that arguably make him more sympathetic. If nothing else, Secretary will spark conversation as it toes the line between offensive and bold commentary.

Stream Secretary on Amazon Prime Video.

    Four Good Days (2020)

Glenn Close, one of the best actors of this generation to have never yet taken home an Oscar, and Mila Kunis are a fantastic pair in Four Good Days, a drama based on the Eli Saslow Washington Post article How’s Amanda? A Story of Truth, Lies and an American Addiction. Margaret “Molly” Wheeler (Kunis) is a drug addict who returns to her mother, Deb (Close), claiming to be finally ready to get sober. She wants to stay for a few days before entering treatment, but the journey turns into one of intense self-reflection and healing.

A heart-wrenching story about the fractured relationship between a mother and daughter and the dark side of addiction, Four Good Days takes you through the perspectives of both the carer and the addict. The tragedy and hopefulness of Four Good Days is propped up by the fact that it’s a true story.

  • Ben Affleck says he doesn’t have ‘many friends’ except Matt Damon

    Ben Affleck and Matt Damon
Ben Affleck and Matt Damon have been best friends for decades.

    • Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s relationship goes back decades, when their moms introduced them as kids.
    • Affleck told BI at the “The Accountant 2” premiere that he doesn’t have many close friends.
    • “You don’t need a million friends. You need a few,” Affleck said.

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s decadeslong friendship is precious — just ask Affleck.

“It’s a beautiful thing,” Affleck told reporters at the red carpet premiere of “The Accountant 2” at the SXSW Film & TV Festival Saturday. “You know, I don’t have very many — none of us really have very many friends. You don’t need a million friends. You need a few. You need good ones.”

“I’m really lucky to have had a friend in Matt,” he added.

Affleck and Damon’s friendship extends back to their childhood, when their moms introduced them as kids in the 1980s. They’ve come a long way since working as uncredited extras together on the 1989 Kevin Costner movie “Field of Dreams,” including winning an Oscar together for writing “Good Will Hunting” in 1998.

It’s not just Affleck who’s gushed about their friendship. In 2023, Damon reflected on how his bond with Affleck changed after his dad died in 2017, calling his friendship with Affleck one of “the three most significant partnerships” in his life.

In addition to their busy acting careers — Damon can next be seen leading the stacked cast of Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey,” while Affleck returns for “The Accountant 2” in April — both have thriving behind-the-scenes careers as producers.

In 2022, they founded Artists Equity together, and “The Accountant 2” is one of the films they’ve produced. It’s a far cry from their days sharing a bank account and hoping their power wouldn’t get turned off.

“It’s been very rewarding to create an opportunity for other people, directors and artists, to kind of be able to take responsibility for and manage and have a more creative say in their projects,” Affleck said, adding that “The Accountant 2” director Gavin O’Connor had a strong vision for the film. “We wanted to set him up to succeed, and I feel like this movie, frankly, really validates that approach.”

“The Accountant 2” is in theaters April 25.
