  • Spider-Man: Brand New Day: everything we know about the MCU film so far

2026 is aiming to be a huge year for cinema, thanks in part to the release of Marvel and Sony’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Being actor Tom Holland’s fourth solo film as everyone’s Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, this superhero film will surely be a huge cinematic event, especially after the massive acclaim received by his previous blockbuster, Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Now that the film’s title has finally been revealed, there has been much speculation as to what audiences will see in this new chapter of Spider-Man’s story on supposed leaks and comic book lore. There is a decent amount of facts and rumors surrounding this big-budget film, so here’s a guide to what has and hasn’t been confirmed about Spider-Man: Brand New Day so far.

When will Spider-Man: Brand New Day come out?

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is scheduled to premiere on July 31, 2026. This places the film’s release date roughly three months after Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters. This should build even more hype for Spidey’s next adventure, depending on what becomes of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes after they face Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom for the first time.

What is Spider-Man: Brand New Day about?

Naturally, the story of Marvel’s next Spider-Man film remains a secret. However, the film’s title implies the story is inspired by the comic book storyline of the same name. The “Brand New Day” arc follows Peter after he wipes the world’s memory of his secret identity, which resulted in him ending his relationship with MJ (which is what occurred in No Way Home).

Whether or not the film’s story will take place before, after, or during Avengers: Doomsday is unknown.

Who will star in Spider-Man: Brand New Day?

    • Tom Holland as Peter Parker/Spider-Man
    • Zendaya as Michelle Jones-Watson (“MJ”)
    • Sadie Sink

While the list of confirmed characters and cast members is short at this time, Holland said via a video at CinemaCon 2025 that Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be a “fresh start” for the franchise. This implies that, aside from MJ, the film will feature an entirely new cast of characters who inhabit Peter Parker’s world. It’s unknown how big of a role Zendaya’s character will play in the film, but for the sequel to undo Doctor Strange’s mind-wipe and have her get back together with Peter would seem like a rushed return to the status quo.

Since it is possible that Peter will find new love in his life, fans have spent a lot of time speculating as to who Stranger Things star Sadie Sink will play in Brand New Day. According to industry scooper Daniel Richtman, Sink’s character is reportedly described as “a sharp and free-spirited woman with a mysterious past. Strong-willed, intelligent, and not easily intimidated.”

Since Sink’s casting was announced, there have been predictions for her character that have ranged from the X-Men’s Jean Grey to cat burglar Felicia Hardy/Black Cat to even a new version of Mary Jane Watson. It has also been theorized that Sink will play Lily Hollister/Menace one of the primary villains in the “Brand New Day” storyline.

Similarly, there have been rumors of a female villain appearing in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, with a casting call reportedly being made that reads: “30s-50s, any ethnicity. A powerful and imposing figure. Seeking an actress with [a] strong and commanding screen presence and depth. Negotiation with someone (doesn’t say who).”

Other casting calls have been allegedly looking for people to play “A resourceful young man in his early 20s” and another man in their 30s to 50s to play “A no-nonsense authority figure who sees the world in black and white. Loyal, determined, and willing to cross lines to maintain order.”

Who is the villain of Spider-Man: Brand New Day?

Since details about the film’s cast are still unfolding, it is still unclear who Spider-Man will face in his fourth solo movie. Despite this, the comic that shares the name of the film features Martin Li/Mister Negative as one of its villains.

In the comics, Mister Negative is both the owner of the F.E.A.S.T. organization of homeless shelters (which Aunt May worked for in Spider-Man: Far From Home) and the super-powered crime boss of the Inner Demons, who corrupts and brainwashes people to do his bidding. Mister Negative became incredibly popular thanks to his appearance in the hit Playstation 4 video game Marvel’s Spider-Man in 2018. Finally, this compelling and powerful villain may receive the big screen treatment that he deserves.

Though it seemed like Spider-Man was on a collision course with Tom Hardy’s Venom after No Way Home, the latter actor confirmed in an interview with AP Enterainment that his version of Eddie Brock won’t face off against Spider-Man. However, nothing is set in stone, especially when it comes to Marvel movies.

There is also a matter of the Venom symbiote he left behind in the mid-credits scene of No Way Home. Whether or not this will lead to Peter donning his iconic alien costume in Brand New Day and facing another version of Venom remains to be seen.

When does Spider-Man: Brand New Day begin filming?

Holland announced that production for his fourth Spider-Man film will commence in the summer of 2025. It is unknown what date principal photography will begin, nor is it known how and if Holland’s work on Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey in the same year will affect the production.

  • Marvel’s Spider-Man 4 finally has an official name

Spider-Man 4 has been slowly lurching forward since 2021, when Marvel and Sony’s Spider-Man: No Way Home reset the board for Tom Holland’s title character. That fits into the newly revealed name of the upcoming Spidey sequel, as revealed by Holland during CinemaCon.

Via Deadline, Holland wasn’t available to appear in person at CinemaCon, due to his commitments to Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. However, Holland did share a video message for theater owners thanking them for their support before revealing that Spider-Man 4 will be called Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

In Marvel’s comic book universe, Brand New Day was the name for Spidey’s light reboot after Peter Parker’s marriage with Mary Jane was retconned away alongside any knowledge of his secret identity. Holland’s Peter underwent a similar fate at the end of No Way Home, and not even MJ (Zendaya) remembers him now.

Thus far, the only cast member confirmed other than Holland is Stranger Things actress Sadie Sink. The rumors about who Sink will play have ranged from the X-Men’s Jean Grey to another version of Mary Jane. Regardless, Sink is far more likely to play another love interest from Peter’s long romantic history in the comics. Zendaya is also expected to return for Brand New Day, but has yet to be officially announced.

Shang-Chi Destin Daniel Cretton appeared in person at CinemaCon for the Brand New Day presentation. Cretton will direct the film for Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures. He promised attendees that he is “exploring the next stage of this amazing character with a team of incredible artists of the world. How to swing, how to create an emotional story and a ride we haven’t seen before.”

Spider-Man: Brand New Day will hit theaters on July 31, 2026.

  • Where is Tom Holland’s Spider-Man in Avengers: Doomsday?

Is the friendly web-slinger going to show up in Avengers: Doomsday?

Yesterday, Marvel announced its principal cast for Avengers: Doomsday. MCU veterans like Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, and Sebastian Stan were all announced in the Doomsday cast. One name was noticeably missing: Tom Holland.

Holland plays Peter Parker/Spider-Man and remains one of the most popular characters in the MCU. Yet Holland was not one of the nearly 30 actors confirmed for Doomsday, begging the question about his involvement in the fifth Avengers film.

Rumors have circulated about Holland’s involvement since Doomsday became official at 2024’s Comic-Con. One report stated that Holland would be the lead in Doomsday, though that’s unlikely to happen after the casting announcements.

Could Marvel withhold Holland’s appearance to keep his involvement as a surprise? Absolutely. Look at Holland’s last Spidey movie, No Way Home, as a prime example of holding casting news close to the vest. Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield had to lie about their involvement in No Way Home for nearly a year, but lo and behold, the two Spider-Man actors teamed up with Holland for the final act.

Reporter Jeff Sneider wrote that Doomsday will feature around 50 Marvel characters. Given that the studio only revealed 27 names, Marvel could announce the other 23 as the release date approaches or keep them as a surprise.

The 28-year-old is currently filming Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. With Avengers: Doomsday now in production, Holland cannot be in two places at once. Daniel Richtman reported that a stunt double will film some of Holland’s scenes as he finishes work on The Odyssey.

Even if Holland does not appear in Doomsday, his Peter Parker will return in Spider-Man 4, coming to theaters on July 31, 2026. Avengers: Doomsday arrives two months prior on May 1, 2026.

  • How will Spider-Man 4 reinvent The MCU’s webslinger?

Tom Holland’s fourth Spider-Man film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is one of 2026’s most highly anticipated blockbusters. Spider-Man: No Way Home set a high bar for the titular hero back in 2021, making fans wonder how Marvel Studios will follow this movie and whether or not it will succeed in theaters.

Though the wait has been long and confusing, Marvel Studios has finally found director Jon Watts’s replacement in Destin Daniel Cretton, and filming for Spider-Man 4 is set to commence in the summer of 2025. With so much hype built around this fourth solo film, one can only imagine how the story could change the MCU’s Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.

Will Spider-Man lead the new Avengers?

Since Spider-Man 4 is scheduled to premiere a couple of months after Avengers: Doomsday, it is possible that the latter’s story will lead into the web-slinger’s next adventure. If so, Spider-Man 4 may show Peter Parker taking a leading role in the war against Doctor Doom. No Way Home showed him beginning to work as a team leader, fighting alongside his two variants from across the Multiverse to save his world from destruction. His fourth film could show him following in Iron Man’s footsteps and leading the new Avengers against Doom or whatever threat they have to face.

    A more distinctive style

Destin Daniel Cretton made quite an impression with his superhero martial arts film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. At one point, he was even supposed to direct the fifth Avengers movie, showing how much faith Marvel Studios has in his skills and judgment as a filmmaker. Though Jon Watts did extraordinarily well with his Spider-Man films, Cretton could present a new look to the franchise with Spider-Man 4 that could further set it apart from the rest of the MCU.

Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy continues to stand out today thanks to the director’s unique and dynamic visual style. Cretton could bring his own distinctive style to create a unique cinematic experience for audiences. The eye-catching visuals and blinding choreography presented in Shang-Chi hint at the kind of film Cretton will create for Spidey’s next solo outing.

    A darker tone

    Sony / Sony

Spider-Man: No Way Home showed Peter entering darker regions than before, as he lost his Aunt May and nearly killed the Green Goblin in a vengeful rage. Since Peter now lives alone in a world that no longer remembers his civilian identity, he could have to face even more inner demons as an isolated vigilante. This approach could help distinguish the hero’s next adventure from the more lighthearted films in the MCU. It could also make for a refreshing change of pace as audiences continue to suffer superhero fatigue after Marvel’s latest projects.

    Will Spider-Man find new love?

    Sony / Sony

Since Peter decided not to tell MJ about their past together at the end of No Way Home, they may remain apart in the hero’s next film. Zendaya is set to reprise her role as MJ in Spider-Man 4, but it is unclear what her role and relationship with Peter will be like in the movie. While Peter and MJ were a terrific couple, and Holland and Zendaya have incredible chemistry together, having them reconnect so soon after No Way Home may cheapen the sacrifice Peter made to protect MJ from his life as Spider-Man.

However, there is still a chance that Petter will find love in his new life, possibly one who is more equipped to live in his world as a superhero. Peter has had many romantic interests in the comics, so there are multiple routes that his love life will take. While Gwen Stacy is a likely candidate, fans have been pining for Peter to finally have a relationship with Felicia Hardy/Black Cat on the big screen, which could allow Marvel to do something different with Spider-Man for his next movie.

    Will Spider-Man have new friends?

Just as Peter may find a new love interest, the hero may also find a new group of friends to support him. Since Ned and all his other classmates have forgotten who Peter is, the latter may start fresh and find new pals as he fights crime or continues his studies. Peter was studying to receive his GED at the end of No Way Home, so this may lead to him attending Empire State University and making new friends like in the comics.

Will Peter meet Venom and more?

For a while, Sony’s Spider-Man Universe seemed to be building up to Tom Hardy’s Venom joining Tom Holland’s Spider-Man on the big screen, along with the other members of the former’s rogues’ gallery. However, a slew of critical and commercial failures seem to have crushed Sony’s plans, especially now that the Venom trilogy has concluded. There was a lot that Sony could’ve done by having Spider-Man encounter characters like Venom, Morbius, Knull, and Kraven the Hunter.

However, parallel universes still leave that opportunity on the table. Since Spider-Man 4 seems like it will be another Multiverse film, Marvel could finally pay off all that buildup and have Peter encounter Venom and multiple other characters from Sony’s Spider-Man Universe.

  • Spider-Man 4 cast adds Stranger Things star Sadie Sink to Tom Holland MCU movie

Spider-Man 4 is turning to Hawkins, Indiana, for some star power. Stranger Things actress Sadie Sink has been cast in Spider-Man 4.

Per Deadline, Sink joins a cast that includes Tom Holland, who returns as Peter Parker.

Sink’s role is expected to be “significant.” Though her role has not been specified, some theories tie the actress to the X-Men. Jeff Sneider reported in December that Sink is being considered to play Jean Grey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Because of Sink’s red hair, the actress could potentially play a version of Mary Jane Watson. All of these casting rumors remain unconfirmed.

Sink is best known for playing Max Mayfield on Netflix’s Stranger Things. Sink recently wrapped production on the fifth and final season, which arrives later this year. Sink can be seen in O’Dessa, Hulu’s post-apocalyptic musical streaming on March 20.

The X-Men are coming to the MCU sooner rather than later. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige revealed that the “Mutant Era” has begun, thanks to Deadpool & Wolverine. Grey is a significant character in the X-Men, so introducing her in a story with Spider-Man makes some sense.

As for other cast members, Zendaya is expected to return as Michelle “MJ” Jones-Watson. However, Zendaya has not signed a deal yet. It is unknown if actors from the Holland-led trilogy, including Jacob Batalon as Ned, will return for Spider-Man 4.

Holland’s fourth solo Spider-Man movie is a sequel to 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home. At the end of No Way Home, Peter had Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) create a spell to erase his existence from everyone’s memory to protect the universe. The world does not remember Peter Parker, but Spider-Man lives on, as seen in the final scene with a new suit.

Destin Daniel Cretton is directing Spider-Man 4, with Sony’s Amy Pascal and Feige attached as producers. Production on Spider-Man 4 is expected to begin after Holland finishes filming Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey.

    Spider-Man 4 opens in theaters on July 31, 2026.
