I’ll be frank: I had mixed feelings, based solely on the trailers, about James Gunn’s Superman reboot. Sure, the casting seemed great, Gunn has a winning track record on superhero fare, and Krypto the dog stole the show every time he appeared. The trailers struck a nice balance between action, humor, and heart. Yet the film also seemed overpacked with super-character cameos, and it was hard to get any sense of the actual plot.
I’ve now seen the film, and those impressions were largely correct. But I’m happy to report that the positives far outweigh any negatives. Superman is a super-fun ride that unabashedly embraces its early comic book roots, naive optimism and all.

Actor Brad Pitt has raced back into cinemas with his latest film, F1. Directed by Joseph Kosinski, who previously helmed Top Gun: Maverick, this sports drama follows veteran racer Sonny Hayes (Pitt) when he is called upon by his old rival (Javier Bardem) to return to Formula One racing to partner up with a young rookie, Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris), in the last few races of the season.
After taking on the world of aerial combat, Kosinski brings his distinctive brand of cinematic flair to this depiction of competitive racing. Naturally, this makes for another captivating, blood-pumping blockbuster achievement. Though it seems to have left a better story in the rearview mirror, F1 makes up for it with a bevy of charismatic performances, engrossing visuals, and stirring moments.

F1‘s opening scene hooks its viewer with its introduction of the laid-back Sonny and his dazzling first race. This presents enough thrills and mystery to leave audiences wanting to see more of his character and learn more about him in the coming attractions. But beyond that, F1 presents a predictable story of an aged athlete, described in the film as “the greatest who never was,” as he tries to educate a younger protégé and regain his former glory. It’s essentially Top Gun: Maverick with race cars, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
Though the story of F1 is familiar, it still presents the right amount of severe character drama and lighthearted quips between Sonny, Joshua, and their teammates to make this an enjoyable summer blockbuster. Nevertheless, the script could ease up on the amount of expositional, on-the-nose dialogue, as journalists and news personalities fill the audience in on the story with heavy-handed commentary with very little subtlety.
Also, F1‘s story seems to brush past the challenges that the characters face, such as forged legal documents, Sonny’s vision problems, and his post-traumatic stress, without much difficulty or consequence. Despite its potholes, F1 features plenty of emotional and even inspiring moments that fit well in the sports film genre, particularly that fiery crash scene and Sonny’s climactic “flight” to the finish line. Overall, F1 presents a fun story with a decent amount of tension. However, the film struggles to ground itself in reality.

In F1, Sonny Hayes is a cocky, loose-cannon racing veteran who doesn’t play by the rules, similar to Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick. Meanwhile, Joshua Pearce is Sonny’s younger, equally arrogant partner, who’s desperate to prove himself and reach the top, which naturally leads to friction between the two. While this is the kind of dynamic seen between Maverick and Rooster in Top Gun: Maverick, Sonny and Joshua lack any prior history together to make their conflict more engaging.
Instead, their relationship is more of a clash of like-minded egos, and the film doesn’t spend enough time dissecting them and their backstories to make their characters feel true and unique. Likewise, Sonny and Joshua’s development feels rushed at times. Though the latter experiences the most growth in the film and follows Sonny’s example, his character presents so much more dramatic potential. Joshua talks about having to climb out from nothing to become the famed racer he is today, which could say a lot about the state of modern athletes. Instead, the film fails to expand upon his character to make him seem especially distinctive or relevant.
Likewise, Sonny is presented as a divorced husband and father coping with a gambling addiction and a traumatic racing accident, and there are some nuances to his character aching to be unlocked. However, F1 seems to speed past all that without adding anything fresh and captivating to his character. Pitt at least touts his trademark charisma in the role of Sonny, making his jerk of a character a lovable, entertaining presence in the film.
At the same time, many members of the film’s supporting cast shine just as brightly as Pitt. Idris brings the right balance of solemn intensity and cocky swagger as Joshua. Javier Bardem brings plenty of drama and humor as Sonny’s friend and struggling new boss, Ruben Cervantes. Kerry Condon, in particular, wins with her performance as Sonny’s tech director/love interest, Kate McKenna, sharing palpable chemistry with Pitt. Her character also stands out for the way she keeps her team together, arguably making her the movie’s secret weapon.

Like with the pilots in Top Gun: Maverick, Kosinski places viewers right in the driver’s seat with the drivers as they battle each other with their cars like the chariot riders in Ben-Hur. This film immerses its audience thanks to the thrilling, up-close camerawork of the racers and their vehicles by Oscar-winning cinematographer Claudio Miranda (who also worked on Top Gun: Maverick). The panning shots filmed atop the moving cars are among the film’s most distinctive visual achievements, giving viewers a heart-pounding view of all the excitement.
F1 keeps up the intensity with super-swift editing courtesy of Stephen Mirrione, jumping from one character to another, from inside the cars to outside on the sidelines. The movie hardly gives its audience the time to breathe with its breakneck depiction of Formula One racing, making it all the more gripping. The thrills and emotion are also elevated by an excellent soundtrack and original musical score from the ever-reliable Hans Zimmer.
Is F1 worth a watch?
For those looking for an eye-catching, heart-pounding underdog story to enjoy in theaters this summer, F1 is the right choice. Kosinski’s movie doesn’t add that much depth or innovation in terms of storytelling, but it is still a sight to behold. F1 is a cinematic roller coaster from start to finish, with the film making up for its shortcomings with compelling performances from the cast and immersive action.

We’re about to enter a new era for DC Studios with the July release of Superman, writer/director James Gunn’s fresh take on one of the most iconic superheroes. And after months of tantalizing teases, we finally have the first official trailer, featuring a bickering Clark Kent and Lois Lane, plenty of action, villains being villains, kaiju, and of course, our favorite flying super-pup, Krypto.
As previously reported, Gunn has described his take as less of an origin story and more of a journey, with Superman struggling to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage and aristocratic origins with his small-town adoptive human family. Gunn tapped David Corenswet to play Clark Kent/Superman at 25, a bit more established than the young cub reporter of Smallville, for instance. Rachel Brosnahan plays Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo plays Jimmy Olsen, and Nicholas Hoult is arch-nemesis Lex Luthor. Luthor’s sidekicks are played by Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher and Terence Rosemore as Otis.
The cast also includes Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern (sporting a disastrous bowl haircut); Anthony Carrigan as Rex Mason/Metamorpho, who can transmute elements in his body to change forms; Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl; Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt/Mister Terrific, an inventor turned superhero; Maria Gabriela de Faria as Angela Spica/The Engineer, whose abilities stem from embedded nanotechnology; and Pruitt Taylor Vince and Neva Howell as Clark’s parents, Jonathan and Martha Kent, respectively. We’ll also see Frank Grillo reprise his role as Rick Flag Sr. from the animated series Creature Commandos; Sean Gunn as Maxwell Lord; and Milly Alcock as Superman’s cousin, Kara Zor-El/Supergirl.
As Tom Cruise loves to say, “See you at the movies.” Warner Bros. has announced the release dates for The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, the next Evil Dead installment, and M. Night Shyamalan’s next mystery.
Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema will release The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum on December 17, 2027. Andy Serkis will direct and star as Gollum, the slimy creature he originated in The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens — the Oscar-winning team behind 2003’s Return of the King — will produce The Hunt for Gollum with Zane Weiner. Walsh, Boyens, Phoebe Gittins, and Arty Papageorgiou will pen the screenplay for The Hunt for Gollum.
The Lord of the Rings franchise took a shot at anime with 2024’s The War of the Rohirrim. The gamble did not work, as Rohirrim received negative reviews and earned $20.5 million worldwide on a $30 million budget.
From Gollum to the Deadites, the next installment in the Evil Dead franchise will be released on July 24, 2026. Souheila Yacoub, who played Shishakli in Dune: Part Two, will star in the Evil Dead sequel.
Sébastien Vaniček will direct from a screenplay he co-wrote with Florent Bernard. Series creator Sam Raimi will produce with longtime Evil Dead producer Rob Tapert. New Line Cinema and Sony Pictures will co-finance the pic.

Another Evil Dead movie should not come as a surprise after the overwhelming success of 2023’s Evil Dead Rise. The fifth installment in the franchise became a box office smash, grossing $147 million worldwide on a budget of less than $20 million.
After tackling a psychological thriller, M. Night Shyamalan will write and direct the supernatural love story Remain. Jake Gyllenhaal, Phoebe Dynevor, and Ashley Walters will star. Shyamalan will produce with Ashwin Rajan, Marc Bienstock, and Theresa Park. Remain follows Tate Donovan, a New York architect who travels to Cape Cod to design his friend’s house after being discharged from a psychiatric facility. Struggling to cope with his sister’s death, Donovan meets Wren, a young woman who will change his world.
Remain is based on an original story by Shyamalan and novelist Nicholas Sparks. (Yes, the same Nicholas Sparks behind romance novels like The Notebook and A Walk to Remember.) Shyamalan and Sparks are independently working on the screenplay and the book, respectively. The movie and novel will follow the same characters and plot.
Sparks’ novel hits stores on October 7, 2025. Shyamalan’s movie arrives in theaters one year later on October 23, 2026.
A judge has thrown out a lawsuit challenging Warner Bros.’ right to distribute James Gunn’s Supermanin 10 countries, including the U.K. and Ireland. The lawsuit was first filed in January by Mark Peary, the nephew of late Superman co-creator Joe Schuster, and argued that Schuster’s estate had the right to cancel the Superman copyright in certain territories.
In a ruling first released on April 24, U.S. District Judge Jesse Furman held that the court has no authority to address the estate’s rights under foreign laws. “The Court concludes that it lacks subject-matter jurisdiction over this case; the case therefore must be and is dismissed,” he wrote.
Following the dismissal, Peary filed a nearly identical lawsuit in state court in New York on April 25. The lawsuit is seeking an injunction that could disrupt the release of Superman, which is set to hit theaters on July 11.
The copyright to Superman has been contested for decades, ever since Schuster and Jerome Siegel created the character and sold the copyright to him for $130 in 1938. In 2013, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeal rejected the Shuster estate’s claim that they still hold the copyright, finding that Shuster’s sister had signed away all rights after Shuster’s death in 1992.
Peary’s lawsuit argues that that ruling settled the copyright claim forever with regard to the United States, but left the question of foreign copyrights undecided. As the movie’s release gets closer, though, the likelihood that this lawsuit will be able to halt its release continues to decrease.
Now that its first season is in the books, we keep getting more evidence that The Pittwas a bona fide hit for Max. Varietyis reporting that the hospital drama averaged 10 million viewers across the first 14 episodes of its first season, according to Warner Bros. Discovery. This number is the average number of people who watched the show both when it premiered and in the days afterward, as opposed to on the day of each episode’s release.
WBD also said that the first episode has now hit 16.2 million viewers and that each episode has outperformed the previous one in night-of viewership for 13 straight weeks. The release of these viewership numbers is atypical for WBD, which typically only releases viewership numbers for shows that also air on HBO. WBD likely shared these numbers because of how successful The Pitt has been.
The show, which is set in a Pittsburgh emergency room and is told in what is essentially real time over the course of a single shift, became a slow-building phenomenon that, as the viewership data suggests, eventually became appointment television.
The show has already been renewed for a second season, and part of the plan for the series is to allow it to function more like old-fashioned network television. In addition to the show’s content, that also means longer seasons, and that the second season will debut just a year after the first.
In addition to catching on with viewers, The Pitt has also earned plenty of critical acclaim, and both fans and critics are already anticipating the show’s second season.
As trade war tensions between the U.S. and China escalate, one of America’s most powerful exports is taking a hit — not soybeans or semiconductors, but stories.
The planned expansion for Hogwarts Legacy has been canceled amid ongoing restructuring at Warner Bros, according to a report from Jason Schreirer at Bloomberg. The expansion was slated for release later this year alongside a Definitive Edition of the game and would have introduced new storylines, side quests, and more — again, according to reports from last year.
According to the sources (who chose to remain anonymous), the cancellation came after concerns that the additional content wouldn’t justify the price the company planned to ask for the expansion. Warner Bros’ video game division has already faced numerous hard decisions in 2025, including the closure of three studios and the cancellation of the Wonder Woman video game. The company said it wanted to double down on its biggest franchises following those closures and specifically mentioned Harry Potter as one of those franchises, but that wasn’t enough to save this expansion.
Avalanche Software is still working on a sequel to the first game. Now that the expansion has been canceled, the team will be able to devote more resources to the development of Hogwarts Legacy 2. It’s possible that some of the planned content of the expansion could resurface in the sequel in the form of sidequests and additional storylines.
The first Hogwarts Legacy has been a runaway success, selling more than 34 million copies and drawing in a huge number of Harry Potter fans. That said, the game was met with legitimate criticism surrounding its beautiful, though often empty-feeling, open-world design.
Hogwarts Legacy 2 doesn’t have an official release date, although estimates place it sometime in the 2026-2027 window. If accurate, the game will launch near the time the new HBO Original Harry Potter series is planned to air and could capitalize on the renewed focus for the franchise.
