  • 3 great free movies to stream this weekend (April 18-20)

It’s only April, but A Minecraft Movie will undoubtedly become one of the highest-grossing films of the year. The Minecraft adaptation has earned over $565 million worldwide in two weeks. Surpassing $1 billion globally is now in play, which would be a monumental win for Warner Bros. Speaking of Warner Bros., Sinners opens this weekend and could reach $50 million domestically.

If you’ve already bought tickets to see A Minecraft Movie and Sinners, save some money by streaming a film on a free FAST service. While the newest movies remain in theaters, there are plenty of classics to select on these services. This weekend, our recommendations include a baseball comedy, a terrifying horror, and a Jim Carrey staple.

We also have guides to the best new movies to stream, the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on Max, and the best movies on Disney+.

    Major League (1989)

It may not feel like it because of the cold weather, but April marks the start of baseball season. The Cleveland Guardians are in second place in the AL Central, but over 30 years ago, the Cleveland Indians were a laughingstock in the Major League. In this fictional storyline, new owner Rachel Phelps (Margaret Whitton) plans to move the team to Miami once ticket sales plummet.

Phelps creates a team of amateurs, aging veterans, and unqualified players to create a losing baseball team. The plan works until some players — including Jake Taylor (Tom Berenger) and Rick Vaughn (Charlie Sheen) — get wind of Phelps’ relocation plans and rally behind a common goal: win the whole f—— thing. Major League relies on comedy over drama, but be prepared to sing Wild Thing when the Indians have a chance to win the one-game playoff.

Stream Major League for free on Pluto TV.

    Hereditary (2018)

This summer, Ari Aster will release his fourth feature film, Eddington. Seven years ago, Aster made his directorial debut with Hereditary, the feel-good movie of the year … kidding. It’s quite the opposite. Hereditary is terrifying beyond belief as Aster crafts a harrowing story built on grief and trauma.

After the death of her mother, Annie Graham (Toni Collette) and her family — husband Steve (Gabriel Byrne), son Peter (Alex Wolff), and daughter Charlie (Milly Shapiro) — struggle to process their sorrow and grow further apart. After another tragedy rocks the family, sinister secrets about their ancestry are unearthed, leading to some of the most disturbing scenes you’ll witness in the genre. Hereditary might keep you up at night, but at least you’ll go to bed knowing you watched a master at work behind the camera.

Stream Hereditary for free on Tubi.

    Liar Liar (1997)

Jim Carrey was “the guy” in 1997. After a legendary 1994 that included Ace Ventura, The Mask, and Dumb and Dumber, Carrey earned a record-breaking $20 million salary for 1996’s The Cable Guy. At the top of the world, Carrey headlined 1997’s Liar Liar, a comedy that utilizes the star’s physical humor.

Attorney Fletcher Reede (Carrey) is excellent in the courtroom because of his innate ability to lie. Unfortunately, Fletcher’s fibbing crosses over into his real life and negatively affects his relationship with his young son, Max (Justin Cooper). On his birthday, Max makes one wish: for his father to tell the truth. Somehow, the wish comes true, and Fletcher cannot tell a lie. Honesty is great, but not when you need to win a court case that will decide your future.

Stream Liar Liar for free on Tubi.

  • 3 underrated (HBO) Max movies you should watch this weekend (April 18-20)

When one hit show ends, another one begins. That’s HBO’s superpower — the network releases nearly every water-cooler TV show. With The White Lotus complete, the focus shifts to The Last of Us season 2, which will now air in the coveted Sunday night slot. Once “that scene” every video gamer knows is coming, the internet will break.

Enough about television. Let’s discuss some movies to watch this weekend before The Last of Us. HBO’s homepage is dominated by its most popular movies, including Y2K, Logan, and 2073. Let’s look further into the library and find something more underrated. Our three suggestions include a horror sequel, a sports story, and a DCEU entry.

We also have guides to the best new movies to stream, the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on Max, and the best movies on Disney+.

    The Conjuring 2 (2016)

Did you know The Conjuring Universe is the highest-grossing horror franchise of all time? Let’s take things back to the second film in the franchise, The Conjuring 2. Set about six years after the events of the first film, The Conjuring 2 revisits paranormal investigators Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga) as they tackle a new case in London.

The Hodgson family believes their youngest daughter has been possessed by a demon. Though initially hesitant to help, the Warrens eventually step in once they encounter the true demon, a sadistic nun. The Conjuring 2 recaptures the haunted house vibe of the first movie but doubles down on the ghost story. A sequence involving the nun in the hallway legitimately might be one of the scariest scenes of the last 10 years.

Stream The Conjuring 2 on Max.

    Eddie the Eagle (2016)

Eddie the Eagle is a formulaic sports movie about an obscure British athlete, Michael “Eddie” Edwards (Taron Egerton). All Eddie wants to do is compete in the Olympics. When the Summer Games are ruled out, Eddie tries his luck with skiing in hopes of competing at the 1988 Winter Games. Eventually, Eddie pivots to ski jumping, a sport the United Kingdom has not participated in at the Olympics in 60 years.

Eddie is far from graceful on the snow, but his determination is admirable. This positive attitude gets the attention of Bronson Peary (Hugh Jackman), a former American ski jumper, who agrees to train Eddie. Again, Eddie the Eagle doesn’t reinvent the underdog story. However, Egerton displays an undeniable charm as Eddie, and the movie’s never-give-up message still plays in this often-cynical world.

Stream Eddie the Eagle on Max.

    Aquaman (2018)

When discussing the DCEU, the failures are mentioned more than the hits. Considering Warner Bros. had to bring in James Gunn and Peter Safran to reboot DC, it’s understandable why fans bring up the negatives before the positives. While Batman v. Superman and Justice League dominate the conversation, Aquaman is one of the few hits of the DCEU. What’s also rarely mentioned: this film made over $1 billion worldwide.

After fighting beside the Justice League, Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa), aka Aquaman, returns to his fishing town, where he occasionally intervenes as a vigilante. Mera (Amber Heard) convinces Arthur to help save Atlantis from his half-brother, King Orm (Patrick Wilson), who plans to become Ocean Master and wage war on the surface world. To save both worlds, Arthur must embrace his destiny and become the true King of Atlantis. It’s not perfect, but Aquaman is a fun, CGI-infused adventure with a confident Momoa as its lead.

    Stream Aquaman on Max.

  • 3 great Hulu movies you need to stream this weekend (April 18 – 20)

Given the success of A Minecraft Movie in theaters, our first instinct for this week’s update was to suggest some great Jack Black movies on Hulu. Unfortunately, there aren’t any great Jack Black movies on Hulu. Year One and Gulliver’s Travels are far from his best work. But while we can’t recommend any of Black’s films on Hulu right now, there are three great Hulu movies that you need to stream this weekend.

The first is a terrific crime thriller that flew way under the radar last year. Our second pick of the week features Jude Law in a different kind of thriller that dramatizes some dangerous events from the early ’80s. And our final pick of the week features an engaging romance between two of the most recognizable TV stars of their era. It’s an onscreen pairing that works surprisingly well.

Need more recommendations? We also have guides to the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on Max, and the best movies on Disney+.

    Lake George (2024)

Boardwalk Empire‘s Shea Whigham gets a juicy leading role in the neo-noir thriller Lake George. After spending a decade in prison for insurance fraud, Don (Whigham) is a man who truly has nothing left to lose. His benefactor, Armen (Glenn Fleshler), escaped the consequences of their actions and doesn’t want to pay Don back for the favors he’s owed. Instead, Armen wants Don to kill his ex-girlfriend, Phyllis (Carrie Coon).

Thankfully for Phyllis, Don likes her plan better. She proposes that they team up to rob Armen’s stashed cash and slip out of town to start a new life. That’s all much easier said than done. Don may have traded one manipulator for another, but Phyllis seems like she has a real heart underneath the schemes. Maybe they’ll both have a chance to get what they deserve.

    Watch Lake George on Hulu.

    The Order (2024)

The Order is loosely based upon real events that took place in the early ’80s. Bob Mathews (Nicholas Hoult) leads The Order, a violent militia that’s too extreme even for the broader white supremacy movement. It’s not enough for Mathews to see other races subjugated. He wants to start a race war and overthrow the U.S. government. And he’s got just enough followers to be dangerous.

FBI agent Terry Husk (Jude Law) and an inexperienced police officer, Jamie Bowen (Tye Sheridan), have a common interest in stopping Mathews’ plot before it can go too far. As their investigation turns up the heat on Mathews, it only makes things more dangerous for Husk and Bowen.

    Watch The Order on Hulu.

    Enough Said (2013)

The Sopranos‘ James Gandolfini had one of his final roles on the big screen in Enough Said opposite Seinfeld‘s Julia Louis-Dreyfus. This romantic drama/comedy features Gandolfini and Louis-Dreyfus as Albert and Eva, a pair of single parents who have a lot in common with each other. Despite Eva’s initial reservations, she joyfully starts a relationship with Albert.

However, Eva has a secret that she’s been keeping from both Albert and his ex-wife, Marianne (Catherine Keener). Eva is close to both and doesn’t want to lose either one by revealing her conflicting relationships with them. That could potentially end her connection with them, but keeping this secret won’t help Eva in the long run.

    Watch Enough Said on Hulu.

  • 3 underrated Netflix movies you should watch this weekend (April 18–20)

Feel like you’ve already seen everything worth watching on Netflix? Think again. Beneath the countless trendy titles and familiar blockbusters lies a goldmine of underrated films that never got their due. These aren’t your typical popular picks, and are actually overlooked films that can deliver unforgettable stories when they find the right audience.

If you’re in the mood to mix things up this weekend, why not take a chance on something different? Whether you’re looking for a wacky sci-fi story, a heartfelt road comedy, or an acclaimed British drama, the streaming giant has some hidden gems that deserve more attention. These understated flicks can entertain, inspire, and amaze — they definitely deserve a spot on your weekend watchlist.

We also have guides to the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on Max, and the best movies on Disney+.

    They Cloned Tyrone (2023)

Fontaine (John Boyega), a drug dealer trying to keep a low profile in his predominantly Black neighborhood, finds himself in a bizarre situation after being gunned down — only to wake up the next morning completely unharmed. Alarmed and confused, he partners with the pimp Slick Charles (Jamie Foxx) and sex worker Yo-Yo (Teyonah Parris) to investigate. Their attempt at uncovering the truth reveals a government conspiracy that’s so outrageous it’s almost too wild to believe. The trio soon realizes that these secrets involving cloning and psychological manipulation are embedded into their community.

They Cloned Tyrone is a riotous fusion of ’70s blaxploitation aesthetics and modern-day sci-fi tropes, resulting in an amusing yet bold take on systemic and structural racism. Directed by Juel Taylor, the inventive debut soars thanks to its leads, with the chemistry between Boyega, Foxx, and Parris being off the charts. The 2023 film dropped quietly on Netflix with minimal fanfare, lost amid the summer blockbuster noise. It has developed a small but vocal cult following that recognizes that in an oversaturated platform packed with formula, They Cloned Tyrone stands out as a rebellious original.

They Cloned Tyrone is streaming on Netflix.

    The Fundamentals of Caring (2016)

Paul Rudd stars as the former writer Ben in The Fundamentals of Caring. While still reeling from a personal tragedy, Ben signs up for a six-week caregiver course. Ben then lands a job assisting Trevor (Craig Roberts), a sarcastic teenager with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Their shaky relationship is complicated by each individual’s emotional baggage, but things take a turn when Ben convinces Trevor to break out of his daily routine and go on a spontaneous road trip to visit the world’s lamest roadside attractions. Along the way, they pick up the runaway Dot (Selena Gomez) and the pregnant hitchhiker Peaches (Megan Ferguson).

Director Rob Burnett adapts Jonathan Evison’s novel with a gentle hand, with The Fundamentals of Caring taking what could’ve been a formulaic road-trip dramedy and transforming it with sincere heart and humor. Among standout performances from its cast, it’s incredible to see Rudd dial down his usual charm to deliver an uncharacteristically restrained and deeply empathetic performance. The chemistry between the two leads is the emotional anchor of the film — awkward, honest, and genuinely earned. Despite its overall quality and Rudd’s star power, this gem flew under the radar in 2016 and now sits on Netflix as a rare feel-good film waiting to be discovered.

The Fundamentals of Caring is streaming on Netflix.

    The Dig (2021)

Set in the quiet countryside of 1939 Suffolk, England, The Dig follows the widowed landowner Edith Pretty (Carey Mulligan) as she hires self-taught archaeologist Basil Brown (Ralph Fiennes) to excavate mysterious mounds on her estate. What begins as a straightforward dig quickly becomes a discovery of immense historical significance — the unearthing of the Sutton Hoo burial ship, a stunning relic from the Anglo-Saxon era. As the excavation gains attention, officials from the British Museum swoop in, threatening to overshadow Brown’s contributions. Meanwhile, Edith continues to battle her worsening illness and becomes closer to Basil, who tries to fight for recognition.

The Dig is an introspective period drama inspired by the real 1939 excavation. Directed by Simon Stone, it slowly but surely becomes less about the ancient treasure and more about its characters’ buried emotional lives. Though critically praised when it first premiered—even receiving five nominations for the British Academy Film Awards—The Dig remains an unsung triumph among Netflix’s selection of dramas. Its contemplative tone and deliberate pacing don’t exactly scream box office gold, but its understated storytelling and character-driven story will likely impress cinephiles looking for more quiet marvels.

The Dig is streaming on Netflix.

  • 3 great free movies to stream this weekend (April 11-13)

Two words: chicken jockey. That phrase has swept the nation thanks to the success of A Minecraft Movie. The fantasy comedy movie shattered expectations with over $163 million domestically, the highest-grossing opening weekend for a movie based on a video game. Expect Warner Bros. to greenlight a sequel in no time.

Perhaps chicken jockey isn’t your thing. It doesn’t have to be! Perhaps you’re content with staying home this weekend and watching a movie. If that’s the case, save some money and watch a free movie on a FAST service. Start with these three movies: a charming rom-com, a Boston crime thriller, and a family comedy.

We also have guides to the best new movies to stream, the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on Max, and the best movies on Disney+.

How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003)

Hollywood needed to bottle up the chemistry between Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and spread it to the ineffective rom-coms that nearly ended the genre years later. Andie Anderson (Hudson) is an advice columnist looking for her next big story. Andie decides to tackle relationships head-on by proving she can get a man to date and dump her within 10 days.

Meanwhile, Benjamin Barry (McConuaghey) is a hotshot executive who bets his boss that he can make any woman fall for him within 10 days. As fate would have it, Andie and Benjamin unknowingly link up and try to execute their respective plans. Again, you can’t fake chemistry, and these two actors form a winning pair.

Stream How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days for free on Pluto TV.

    The Town (2010)

Ben Affleck began his career comeback in 2007 with Gone Baby Gone. Three years later, Affleck leveled up, returned to his Boston roots, and helmed one of the best heist movies of the 21st century in The Town. Doug MacRay (Ben Affleck) and his three friends, Jem Coughlin (Jeremy Renner), Gloansy MacGloan (Slaine), and Dez Elden (Owen Burke), rob banks for cash in Charleston.

During one of their heists, Jem takes a hostage, bank manager Claire Keesey (Rebecca Hall), much to Doug’s dismay. Though they release her without harm, Doug checks in on Claire to find out what she knows. Going against his better judgment, Doug falls in love with Claire and starts picturing a future outside of crime. However, the local mobster (Pete Postlethwaite) doesn’t plan on letting Doug escape so easily. The Town proved Affleck had the goods behind the camera, setting the stage for his Oscar-winning moment in Argo.

Stream The Town for free on Pluto TV.

    Grown Ups 2 (2013)

Last week, Grown Ups was one of the recommendations. If you watched the Adam Sandler comedy, you might as well continue down this road and watch the sequel, Grown Ups 2. Three years after the events of the first movie, Lenny Feder (Adam Sandler) moves his family back to his hometown to be closer to his friends: Eric Lamonsoff (Kevin James), Kurt McKenzie (Chris Rock), and Marcus Higgins (David Spade).

Between raising children and facing their own mortality, these four middle-aged friends all realize that they can’t outrun their problems, no matter how many jokes they make or beers they drink. Grown Ups 2 doesn’t reinvent the wheel. It’s Sandler and Co. riffing on each other for our entertainment. Sounds good to us.

Stream Grown Ups 2 for free on Tubi.

  • 3 underrated Netflix shows you should watch this weekend (April 11-13)

Exploring Netflix can be fun, but eventually, you might realize that you don’t subscribe to the app because you love to scroll through it. If you’re looking for a show that you can sit down and enjoy, we’ve made sure that the algorithm doesn’t steer you the wrong way.

Each of these shows is relatively compact, and they all speak to different tastes. If you’re looking for an intriguing murder story, we’ve got that. This list also has a taste of sci-fi and horror, so whatever you might be looking for, this list will hopefully keep you covered.

We also have guides to the best new shows to stream, the best shows on Netflix, the best shows on Hulu, the best shows on Amazon Prime Video, the best shows on Max, and the best shows on Disney+.

    The Midnight Club (2022)

Mike Flanagan has made a number of hugely successful horror series for Netflix, but The Midnight Club is probably the most underseen and underrated. The series focuses on eight terminally ill teenagers who are living in a home together and gather each night at midnight to tell scary stories and search for signs from the beyond.

A thoughtful meditation on the nature of death (like much of Flanagan’s work), The Midnight Club has plenty of scares, but its structure gives it the opportunity to tell a wide variety of different kinds of scary stories without abandoning its central characters for too long. It’s definitely not perfect, but it’s well worth watching.

You can watch The Midnight Club on Netflix.

    Terminator Zero (2024)

An anime series adapted from the world of Terminator, Terminator Zero is set in an entirely different part of this universe and is all the better for it. The show follows a computer programmer living in 1997 who has been developing a program that is designed to compete with Skynet.

The day before Judgment Day, the programmer discovers he and his family are being chased by a robot assassin. Plus, a man from 2022 has traveled back in time to save them. That classic Terminator formula is helped tremendously by the vivid animation and by the fact that this series is set in Japan. It’s a brilliant zag for a franchise that, at least theatrically, seems to have stalled out.

You can watch Terminator Zero on Netflix.

    Ripley (2024)

Although it came out just last year, it already feels like Ripley didn’t get as much love as it deserved. The series, which stars Andrew Scott as the titular character, is an adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s The Talented Mr. Ripley that manages to sit nicely alongside the theatrical one we already have.

If you aren’t aware, the story follows Ripley as he’s recruited to track down the scion of a wealthy man living dangerously in Europe. As he becomes more ensconced in the life of this wealthy heir, things get messy and eventually violent. Scott is brilliant in the central role, and the series features some of the best black-and-white cinematography of the past decade.

You can watch Ripley on Netflix.

  • 3 underrated (HBO) Max movies you should watch this weekend (April 11-13)

With The White Lotus season 3 completed, HBO has two hit shows premiering this weekend: The Last of Us season 2 and Hacks season 4. The former set viewership records on its way to becoming a beloved video game adaptation. The latter recently won the Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series.

While HBO continues to dish out great television, the movie library on Max isn’t too shabby. Blockbusters like The Lord of the Rings and DC movies are fun, but you can find some underrated hits within each genre. Try something new this weekend and give one of these three movies a shot.

We also have guides to the best new movies to stream, the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on Max, and the best movies on Disney+.

    Greenland (2020)

Greenland is another example of “Gerard Butler channeling his inner 1990s action hero to save the world.” Instead of defeating another man, Butler tackles one of his biggest obstacles yet: Mother Nature. Humanity’s time is limited after a world-destroying comet hits Earth’s atmosphere.

John Garrity (Butler), his estranged wife (Morena Baccarin), and his son (Roger Dale Floyd) must reach an evacuation flight that will take them to an underground bunker in Greenland. The clock is ticking because people will fight (and kill) their way into that bunker. Good luck stopping Butler in a scrap.

    Stream Greenland on Max.

    Y2K (2024)

Nostalgia is a powerful drug. In Y2K, Kyle Mooney travels back to 1999 and reminisces about the year 2000 problem in a horror-fueled comedy. It’s New Year’s Eve in 1999. Best friends and social outcasts Eli (Jaeden Martell) and Danny (Julian Dennison) decide to crash the popular high school party so the former can talk to his crush, Laura (Rachel Zegler).

When the clock strikes midnight, anarchy ensues from an unlikely source: technology. The sentient creatures — essentially anything electronic — go on a killing spree and take over the town. The remaining survivors must work together to end the Y2K event before AI becomes the dominant race. If anything, Y2K will further your appreciation for Fred Durst.

    Stream Y2K on Max.

    The Lighthouse (2019)

Robert Eggers is a master of worldbuilding. He’s a meticulous filmmaker who puts so much thought and care into every frame. The Lighthouse is arguably his most divisive film. Admittedly, two men working at a New England lighthouse in the 1890s isn’t the most invigorating premise.

However, Eggers blends multiple genres — horror, psychological thriller, and comedy — into a gripping meditation on isolation and the human psyche. Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson, the lighthouse keepers, fully commit to the roles of two men descending into madness. Additionally, The Lighthouse has some of the best cinematography and production design from that year.

    Stream The Lighthouse on Max.

  • 3 great Hulu movies you need to stream this weekend (April 11 – 13)

Hulu has added several new films in the past week, including movies that either flew under the radar in theaters or skipped them altogether. While not all of the latest additions are on the same level, two are easy picks for the three great Hulu movies to stream this weekend.

The two films in question are a thriller called Magpie and a harrowing period drama, Small Things Like These. To lighten the mood, we’re kicking things off with an action comedy starring Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon, which also recently arrived on Hulu.

Need more recommendations? We also have guides to the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on Max, and the best movies on Disney+.

The Spy Who Dumped Me (2009)

Audrey Stockman (Mila Kunis) is having a particularly bad birthday in The Spy Who Dumped Me. As the title of this action comedy implies, Audrey has been dumped by her boyfriend, Drew Thayer (Justin Theroux), on her special day. But she had no idea that he was a spy until enemy agents showed up to kill them.

That leaves Audrey and her best friend, Morgan Freeman (Kate McKinnon), on the run with intel that’s apparently worth killing for. Neither woman knows whom they can really trust except each other. And they’re going to have to survive a wild trip to Europe if they want their old lives back.

Watch The Spy Who Dumped Me on Hulu.

    Magpie (2024)

Star Wars actress Daisy Ridley and former Star Trek: Discovery cast member Shazad Latif co-star as a married couple in the neo-noir thriller Magpie. The marriage of Anette (Ridley) and Ben (Latif) is anything but happy, even though their young daughter, Matilda (Hiba Ahmed), has been cast to star in a Hollywood project alongside a famous actress, Alicia (Matilda Lutz).

While chaperoning his daughter on set, Ben develops romantic feelings for Alicia. At the same time, Anette is stuck at home taking care of their newborn and feeling the pressure from her husband. Annette can only be pushed so far before she snaps, and her breaking point may be sooner than expected.

    Watch Magpie on Hulu.

    Small Things Like These (2024)

For one of his first movies after his Oscar-winning turn in Oppenheimer, Cillian Murphy starred in a period drama called Small Things Like These. Bill Furlong (Murphy) is a coal merchant who is attempting to support his family in Ireland in the late 1980s when he discovers a young pregnant woman, Sarah (Zara Devlin), locked in a shed at a convent.

Bill doesn’t immediately realize he’s discovered proof that the nuns at the convent are abusing the women in his care. However, he definitely notices the attempt by Sister Mary (Emily Watson) to silence him through threats and bribery. If Bill asks too many questions or even talks about what he’s seen, he risks reprisals. But after everything he’s lived through, can Bill really turn a blind eye to Sarah’s suffering?

Watch Small Things Like These on Hulu.

  • 3 underrated Netflix movies you should watch this weekend (April 11–13)

Endlessly scrolling through Netflix with nothing jumping out? We’ve all been there. The streaming giant’s homepage is often full of flashy blockbusters and trending titles, but some of the best movies on Netflix are the ones that aren’t plastered everywhere. These hidden gems might not have gotten the spotlight, but they’re packed with great stories, strong performances, and “Why didn’t I watch this sooner?” energy.

This weekend, skip the obvious picks and go for something off the beaten path. Whether you’re up for a suspenseful period film, a heartbreaking war story, or a drama inspired by real events, Netflix has you covered. These underrated movies may have little to no hype, but that’s exactly why these unexpected favorites deserve a spot in your queue.

We also have guides to the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on Max, and the best movies on Disney+.

    The Wonder (2022)

In the aftermath of Ireland’s Great Famine, English nurse Lib Wright (Florence Pugh) is summoned to a secluded village to observe Anna O’Donnell (Kíla Lord Cassidy), an 11-year-old girl who claims to have survived without food for four months. Director Sebastián Lelio’s The Wonder follows Lib as she investigates this “divine miracle,” which has attracted people from around the country, curious to see the young girl. Lib, tasked with uncovering the truth, approaches the situation with scientific skepticism, which soon leads to a clash with the village’s deeply rooted religious convictions.

The Wonder boasts a wholly unique premise based on the eponymous 2016 novel by Emma Donoghue. It soars thanks to Pugh’s restrained performance, which shows a woman torn between her duty and her conviction. This quiet story is set against a flawlessly shot Irish landscape, with its stark beauty adding to the film’s tense atmosphere. While its deliberate pacing and sparse story may fall short for those expecting a more intense payoff, the 2022 drama movie is worth watching for those who appreciate a slow and introspective period piece.

The Wonder is streaming on Netflix.

First They Killed My Father (2017)

Set in Cambodia in 1975, First They Killed My Father depicts the Khmer Rouge’s reign of terror from the perspective of five-year-old Loung Ung (Sreymoch Sareum). Her peaceful life in Phnom Penh is shattered when the Khmer Rouge seize power, forcing her family to abandon their home under the guise of temporary evacuation. The regime’s oppressive grip tightens as citizens are subjected to brutal labor camps. Loung’s father, Pa Ung (Phoeung Kompheak), is a former government official and soon becomes a target, prompting the family to adopt new peasant identities to survive. Eventually, Loung is separated from her loved ones and trained as a child soldier, forced to go through violence and loss.

Angelina Jolie’s directorial endeavor, First They Killed My Father, is one of the most important movies about the Cambodian genocide. This underrepresented dark part of history is depicted in an unflinching and often disturbing way in the 2017 Khmer-language film. Despite its critical acclaim and a nomination for Best Foreign Language Film at the Golden Globes, the movie remains underappreciated in popular discourse, rarely cited among the best movies based on true stories. Its Khmer-language presentation and devastating story may have limited its reach, yet these elements are integral to its impact and contribute to making it an essential watch for fans of the genre.

First They Killed My Father is streaming on Netflix.

    99 Homes (2014)

Andrew Garfield stars as construction worker Dennis Nash in 99 Homes, which sees him unemployed and struggling to support his young son, Connor (Noah Lomax), and mother, Lynn (Laura Dern). Set in Orlando during the aftermath of the 2008 housing crisis, Dennis’ bad situation gets worse when real estate broker Rick Carver (Michael Shannon) evicts them from their longtime home. Desperate and with few options, Dennis approaches Carver for work, initially taking on menial tasks. He’s soon roped into Carver’s more questionable schemes, even assisting in the very evictions that once messed up his family’s stability.

Directed by Ramin Bahrani, 99 Homes captures a man on the brink. Garfield and Shannon are impeccably cast as their respective characters, with one’s desperation and the other’s greed playing off of each other to create a thrilling drama. Its stellar performances didn’t translate to box office success, with the film grossing only $1.9 million against its $8 million budget. The Thin Red Line (1998)

Terrence Malick is a director like no other, which makes describing his films exceptionally difficult. The Thin Red Line is set in the Pacific theater during World War II and follows a group of soldiers preparing for the Battle of Guadalcanal.

Featuring an array of talented young actors, the movie is ultimately a meditation on the nature of life, death, and war, featuring the kinds of digressions and tangents that make Malick’s movies so distinct. The Thin Red Line also features an all-time great score from Hans Zimmer and cameos from actors like George Clooney, who were almost completely cut out of the final version.

    Bowfinger (1999)

Without exaggeration, one of the funniest films ever made. Bowfinger is a showbiz story about an aspiring filmmaker who finally decides to make the movie of his dreams. To make his dream of moviemaking a reality, he decides to partner with one of the biggest stars in Hollywood, filming an entire movie around him without being aware that he’s in it.

Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy make for a perfect comedic tag team here, and Bowfinger has enough gags to leave you rolling long after the credits are over. It’s got a little heart, too, but really, Bowfinger has two comedic geniuses at the top of their game, and that’s what makes it special.

You can watch Bowfinger on Amazon Prime Video.

The Last Temptation of Christ (1988)

Martin Scorsese’s chronicling of the life of Jesus Christ was controversial at the time and, even all these years later, still reads to some as sacrilege. The movie follows Jesus as he becomes a savior, even as he is plagued by doubt and confusion about whether he is everything he claims to be.

The movie’s final sequence, which involves Jesus imagining a normal life for himself, was controversial, but it’s also what makes the entire enterprise work. Willem Dafoe is exemplary in the central role, and Last Temptation is still one of Scorsese’s most fascinating, thought-provoking movies all these years later.
