WhatsApp is testing a new chat feature that ensures better privacy
Do you have that one friend in your group chat who can’t keep a secret to save their life? WhatsApp is giving you a solution to that problem with “advanced chat privacy,” a new feature currently being tested that allows you to block other people from exporting chats or automatically saving photos and other media you send them without your consent.
WABetaInfo reported on Monday that the toggle for the new chat privacy feature was spotted in the latest app beta for Android and iOS over the weekend. The idea of “advanced chat privacy,” which works for both individual and group chats, is to give its users better control over the information they share with anyone they’re chatting with to reduce the risk of accidental leaks, unauthorized data sharing, and archiving messages outside of the chat without their knowledge.
When the “advanced chat privacy” feature is toggled on, everyone in the group chat and the individual chat will be notified when the setting is turned on. This automatically blocks chat participants from exporting the entire chat history to outside networks and automatically saving media onto their device galleries, especially when the content of the chats and media contain sensitive information. The setting also disables Meta AI, which answers questions and generates images within the chat. However, “advanced chat privacy” is managed on a per-chat basis, meaning it won’t be automatically applied to every chat from WhatsApp’s general settings page. You would have to open the settings from the chat of your choice to enable the feature.

1. Launch the Google Play Store or Apple App Store and search for WhatsApp.
2. Open the official WhatsApp app list and install the available updates.
3. Once updated, launch the WhatsApp app on your phone.
4. Switch to the Updates tab at the bottom of the app.

6. Select whether you want to add text, voice, an image or a video.

Too many WhatsApp groups? There’s a fix coming for that
If you’re in far too many WhatsApp groups and wish there was a way out, a new update could soon be rolling out to help.
The new feature, spotted in WhatsApp beta, is expected to arrive in a stable update soon.
Currently chat broadcast, or broadcast list, can be used to send a single message to multiple recipients. A great way to avoid creating a new group, right? Nearly.
The issue here has always been that you can’t control messages. This appears to be about the change with a new “limit messages” feature.
Usefully, this allows you to limit the number of messages sent in that particular broadcast. A monthly cap is set on the number of messages that can be sent in that particular broadcast group.
So if you have the broadcast set to a 30 day limit, for example, that will default to a 30 message limit.
WhatsApp will show you, at the top of the broadcast, how many recipients are in there as well as how many messages they have left out of the total available for the period. This comes up as a prompt alert, in the beta version at least.
How can I try this in WhatsApp?
At this stage the new broadcast chat features are only available in WhatsApp Android beta 2.25.10.8.
If you want to try you will have to be part of the Google Play Beta Program.
Failing that you can wait for this to roll out on the stable WhatsApp version in what should be an update that’s coming soon – based on how developed this already is in the beta.
Make WhatsApp default on iPhone
This news comes after the recent iOS 18.4 update which allows iPhone users to set WhatsApp as their default service both for messaging and for calls.
To do this make sure you’re updated to iOS 18.2 or newer, go to Settings, then Apps then Default Apps where you can select the Messaging and Calling menus to set WhatsApp as default.

iPhone users can now get setup so that WhatsApp is their default messaging and calling app.
If your iPhone is updated to iOS 18.2 then the functionality is already available for you right now.
This means that whenever you hit a phone number or call button in a browser, WhatsApp will open. The same applies to messaging from anywhere like Contacts, Maps and beyond.
Apple isn’t saying you have to do this, or stay doing this, but has simply opened up the options so you can have your phone setup personalized to whatever serves you best.
How to default to WhatsApp on iPhone
First up ensure you’re running iOS 18.2. Up to date? Move on.
Next step is to open Settings and then roll on down to the Apps section.
From here you’ll want to go deeper into Default Apps. You should then be met with a list of compatible apps.
Select WhatsApp in both the Messaging and Calling menus.
That’s it. You’re setup so the next time you need to call or text from another part of the iPhone, it’ll send you straight to your WhatsApp setup.
Note it’s listed in beta
While this appears to be available in the latest iOS version, it’s actually noted as a feature for the WhatsApp testflight beta.
The beta is a version of WhatsApp that can be downloaded and used by anyone that wants to try the latest features first. Of course it can mean there are sometimes bugs not quite worked out yet, so this isn’t for everyone.
It appears to work perfectly well with the latest standard WhatsApp beta version on iOS (version 25.8.74 in the App Store). When that applies to all versions of the standard WhatsApp is less clear.
