  • Yellowstone spinoff: Luke Grimes to star as Kayce Dutton in Y: Marshals at CBS

Kayce Dutton is heading to CBS. The network has ordered Y: Marshals, a new Yellowstone spinoff starring Luke Grimes.

Kayce Dutton will join an elite unit of U.S. Marshals in the spinoff. Per the logline (via Variety), Kayce will be “combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana, where he and his teammates must balance family, duty, and the high psychological cost that comes with serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence.”

SEAL Team’s Spencer Hudnut is the writer, executive producer, and showrunner on Y: Marshals. Taylor Sheridan, the creative visionary behind the Yellowstone universe, will executive produce the spinoff for MTV Entertainment Studios with David C. Glasser. Additional executive producers include Grimes, John Linson, Art Linson, Ron Burkle, David Hutkin, and Bob Yari.

Y: Marshals will be a sequel series set after the events of Yellowstone, the flagship show that aired on Paramount Network for five seasons from 2018 to 2024. CBS has ordered 13 episodes of Y: Marshals and plans to film the show this summer for a 2026 midseason premiere on Sunday nights.

In the Yellowstone series finale, Kayce signed over the Yellowstone ranch to the reservations for $1.25 an acre, the price James Dutton paid to settle there in 1883. In return, Kayce was given a small plot of land to live on with his wife, Monica (Kelsey Asbille), and son, Tate (Brecken Merrill). It’s unknown if Asbille, Merrill, or any other Yellowstone character besides Kayce will appear in the spinoff.

Y: Marshals is one of several planned Yellowstone spinoffs. Two prequel series, 1883 and 1923, previously aired on Paramount+. Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser will reprise their roles as Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler in Dutton Ranch (tentative title), a Paramount Network series set to air this fall. Unlike Yellowstone, Y: Marshals and Dutton Ranch will stream on Paramount+.

The Madison, a spinoff starring Michelle Pfeiffer, and the prequel 1944 will also stream on Paramount+.

  • 1923 is over. Here are 5 more shows you should watch

It’s the end of the road for 1923. The popular Yellowstone prequel recently wrapped up its second season with an explosive finale. Created by Taylor Sheridan, 1923 explored the origins of the Dutton family in 1923. Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren star as Jacob and Cara Dutton, who face battles on all fronts to protect their ranch during the difficult times of Prohibition and the beginning of the Great Depression.

Sheridan created 1923 to be a two-season series. It’s unknown if the prolific showrunner will write a third season due to the high ratings. For now, here are five shows to watch if you liked 1923.

    Yellowstone (2018-2024)

    Paramount Network

If you’re going to pick one Sheridan show to pair with 1923, Yellowstone makes the most sense since it inspired the Ford-led prequel. Yellowstone introduces the world to the Dutton family, owners of the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch and arguably the most powerful family in Montana.

John Dutton (Kevin Costner) is the patriarch who controls every aspect of the ranch, the largest in the state. Along with his kids (Wes Bentley, Kelly Reilly, and Luke Grimes), the Duttons navigate political pressure and corporate greed as they face obstacles at every corner — wealthy businessmen, government officials, and an Indian reservation. Yellowstone is a Western soap opera dressed up as a drama (compliment). Plus, anyone who watches at least one episode will Google flights to Montana.

    American Primeval (2025)

American Primeval doesn’t pull its punches in its depiction of Western expansion. Executive produced by Peter Berg, American Primeval follows several interconnected storylines in 1857 during the Utah War. The most compelling storyline involves Isaac (Taylor Kitsch), a skilled woodsman who agrees to help Sara (Betty Gilpin) and her son, Devin (Preston Mota), get across the frontier.

The series also focuses on the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and its Mormon militia, which engage in violent and oppressive confrontations with other cultures in the area. If you’re looking for a series that glamorizes expansion, this ain’t it. It’s a violent watch, but an enthralling one where you can’t look away.

    Godless (2017)

    Netflix

Before he won multiple Emmys for his work on The Queen’s Gambit, Scott Frank created the underrated Godless, a Western drama set in 1884. Roy Goode (Jack O’Connell) is an outlaw on the run after betraying his boss, Frank Griffin (Jeff Daniels), a notorious criminal with a history of brutality and violence.

Roy attempts to find refuge in La Belle, a New Mexico town occupied by women after a mining accident killed most of the men. Hardened widow Alice Fletcher (Michelle Dockery) agrees to nurse Roy back to health. The town gets word that Frank and his gang are headed to La Belle, Alice and the other residents prepare to defend their town to the death. Considering how Westerns predominantly focus on men, Godless is a great change of pace and spotlight for a strong female-focused story.

    Hell on Wheels (2011-2016)

    FX

In the 2010s, AMC wasn’t only dedicated to The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, and Mad Men. Mixed in between those premier shows was Hell on Wheels, a Western drama set in the aftermath of the Civil War. Former Confederate soldier Cullen Bohannon (Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Anson Mount) is on a mission to find the Union soldiers who killed his wife and son.

Bohannon travels west to work on the construction of the Transcontinental Railroad, aka “Hell on Wheels.” Over the five-season run, Hell on Wheels shifts from a revenge plot to a show about political conflict, individual ambition, and the growth of the American frontier. This shift in tone and exploration of a new frontier is why Hell on Wheels lasted as long as it did.

    The Mandalorian (2019-)

Din Djarin flying while holding onto Grogu.
    Disney

How does a Star Wars show find its way on this list? The Mandalorian is essentially a space Western. Think of Clint Eastwood as an outlaw with an armored suit. Released in 2019, The Mandalorian is unquestionably the biggest Star Wars show on Disney+. The series stars Pedro Pascal as Din Djarin, a Mandalorian bounty hunter (“Mando”) working five years after the events of Return of the Jedi.

An old Imperial client hires Mando to retrieve a target and bring it to him alive. When Mando discovers the target, he sees that it’s a green infant named Grogu. Instead of returning the child to his client, Mando takes Grogu on a galaxy-trotting adventure to find the little creature’s home. The show works best when positioned as an “adventure of the week.” Fans have to wait one more year for the return of “Baby Yoda” in 2026’s The Mandalorian & Grogu.

  • Has Netflix found its version of Yellowstone with Ransom Canyon?

Every major network and streamer is searching for the next  Yellowstone. The Taylor Sheridan Western series is a ratings juggernaut and, thanks to its spin-offs, has its own television universe. Netflix will try to attract Yellowstone fans with its upcoming Western, Ransom Canyon, which finally has a trailer.

“In Ransom Canyon, everyone’s running from something or running to something,” Josh Duhamel’s Staten Kirkland states in the trailer. Staten, a widower still grieving from the loss of his wife, owns the Double K Ranch of Texas Hill Country. Staten’s way of life is threatened as competing families fight for control of the land. Despite the impending showdown, Staten tries to find love again with Quinn O’Grady (Minka Kelly), who returns to Ransom after a stint in New York to run the local dance hall.

With the battle for land combined with romance, Ransom Canyon mixes Yellowstone’s drama with Virgin River’s charm.

Besides Duhamel and Kelly, Ransom Canyon stars Lizzy Greene as Lauren Brigman, James Brolin as Cap Fuller, Eoin Macken as Davis Collins, Meta Golding as Paula Jo, Marianly Tejada as Ellie Catawnee, Jack Schumacher as Yancy Grey, Garrett Wareing as Lucas Russell, and Andrew Liner as Reid Collins.

April Blair creates, writes, and executive produces Ransom Canyon based on Jodi Thomas’ book series of the same name. Amanda Marsalis, David McWhirter, Meera Menon, and Michael Offer will direct. The first season consists of 10 episodes.

This is Netflix’s second original Western series of 2025. American Primeval, Peter Berg’s violent drama about expansion in the American West, became one of the most popular shows on Netflix upon its release in January.

Ransom Canyon streams on Netflix on April 17.

  • CBS reportedly developing Yellowstone spinoff for Luke Grimes

Late last year, the five-season run of Yellowstone came to a conclusion. Before the series finale in December, it was announced that Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser will reprise their roles as Beth Dutton and her husband, Rip Wheeler, in the first direct Yellowstone spinoff. Now, word has emerged that a second Yellowstone spinoff is in the works featuring Luke Grimes as Beth’s younger brother, Kayce Dutton.

According to Deadline, CBS is developing the new spinoff, which would be the first show in the franchise created directly for the network. SEAL Team veteran Spencer Hudnut will be guiding the series through development and may end up as the showrunner as well.

In the final episode of the series, Kayce sold the Yellowstone ranch — with the blessing of his sister and brother-in-law — to the Broken Rock Indian Reservation, whose ancestors controlled the land before the Dutton family claimed it for themselves. In return for that sweetheart deal, Kayce and his wife, Monica (Kelsey Asbille), as well as their son, Tate (Brecken Merrill), were allowed to remain in a house built on the land where they had set up a small family business.

Without the fate of the ranch to fight for, it’s unclear what the premise of the new series would be about. The report is vague about the details, but it suggests that it will connect to Kayce’s history as a Navy SEAL.

In addition to this potential series and the one starring Reilly and Hauser, a third spinoff, The Madison, is already well-underway. Michelle Pfeiffer will headline that show. In the meantime, Peacock recently added all of the episodes for Yellowstone season 5 part 2.

  • Here’s when Yellowstone season 5, part 2 will be streaming on Peacock

Yellowstone might be off the air, but the final episodes are finally heading to streaming. Yellowstone season 5, part 2 will exclusively stream on Peacock starting on March 16.

Taylor Sheridan’s Western drama aired the final six episodes of season 5 in November and December. Although the show aired on Paramount Network, Yellowstone does not stream on Paramount+. Instead, previous seasons of Yellowstone can be found on Peacock because of the show’s licensing agreement with NBCUniversal.

After the Yellowstone season 5, part 1 finale aired in January 2023, the show experienced a period of turmoil due to the alleged feud between Sheridan and star Kevin Costner. In a February 2023 report, Sheridan and Paramount were moving to end Yellowstone in its current form and create a spinoff starring Matthew McConaughey.

While the spinoff with McConaughey never happened, the Costner drama continued for over a year. The issues stemmed from Costner’s Yellowstone filming schedule and commitments to Horizon: An American Saga. Costner officially announced his exit from the series in June 2024.

Yellowstone season 5, part 2 revolved around two storylines: John Dutton’s demise and the battle to keep the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch.

Yellowstone season 5, part 2’s cast included Luke Grimes as Kayce Dutton, Kelly Reilly as Beth Dutton, Wes Bentley as Jamie Dutton, Cole Hauser as Rip Wheeler, Kelsey Asbille as Monica Long Dutton, and Gil Birmingham as Chief Thomas Rainwater.

During its run, Yellowstone became one of the most popular TV shows on cable. Sheridan created two prequel series — 1883 and 1923 — with another spinoff — The Madison — coming later this year. Reilly and Hauser also reached deals to reprise their Yellowstone roles for a spinoff series.
