GST/HST Tax Holiday on Select Items in Canada

GST/HST Tax Holiday on Select Items in Canada

The Canadian government has announced a temporary GST/HST tax holiday on select items, starting on December 14, 2024 and ending on February 15, 2025. This tax holiday is intended to provide relief for Canadian consumers during the holiday season and beyond.

During this period, no GST/HST will be charged on the following items:

Children’s clothing and footwear
Children’s diapers
Children’s car seats
Select children’s toys
Jigsaw puzzles
Video game consoles, controllers, and physical video games
Physical books
Printed newspapers
Christmas and similar decorative trees
Most food and beverages and related services
This tax holiday applies to all stages of the supply chain, from manufacturer to wholesaler to retailer. This means that businesses will not charge GST/HST on these items, and consumers will not pay GST/HST at the checkout.

This tax holiday is a welcome relief for Canadian families, especially during the holiday season when expenses tend to increase. It will help Canadians save money on essential items and make their budgets go further.
