As advanced AI video generators like ByteDance's Seedance drastically lower production costs, synthetic actors are rapidly replacing human performers across China's entertainment sector.
The rapid adoption of generative video models like ByteDance's Seedance 2.0, Seedance 2.5, and Wan 3.0 is fundamentally reshaping China's digital entertainment landscape. According to the China Netcasting Services Association, approximately 128,000 short dramas were published in the country during the first quarter of 2026 alone. This figure represents three times the total volume recorded for the entirety of 2025, with an astonishing 95 percent of these new releases being entirely AI-generated.
This massive shift is driven by extreme cost efficiencies. Shen Yang, a professor at Tsinghua University, noted that producing one minute of AI-generated video now costs between $90 and $120. This price point represents a mere ten percent of the traditional production costs associated with hiring human actors and crew. Consequently, production houses are aggressively transitioning to digital avatars to maximize their output while slashing overhead.
For industry practitioners, this technological leap has created a highly volatile employment market. China's entertainment and livestreaming sectors are massive, directly employing 690,000 people, while another 15 million individuals rely on livestreaming as their primary source of income. Many human performers are now facing displacement. Some actors report being forced to digitally clone their voices and physical likenesses into proprietary AI tools before being laid off. This practice has fueled a surge in AI-related labor disputes over the last two to three years.
For media creators and developers, these developments demonstrate that AI-generated video has matured from an experimental novelty into a highly viable commercial standard. The introduction of newer models like Seedance 2.5 and Wan 3.0 has further elevated visual fidelity, making synthetic actors nearly indistinguishable from real humans. While this transition offers unprecedented scalability for content platforms, it forces creative professionals to navigate a landscape where personal likenesses are heavily commodified and traditional performance jobs are rapidly evaporating.
