Debian rejects ban on AI-generated code contributions

The Debian Project has officially adopted a new policy regarding generative AI, choosing to permit its use in the development, maintenance, and documentation of the popular Linux distribution. Following a vote among the project's developers, the community decided that AI-assisted contributions will not face a blanket ban. Instead, the new guidelines state that the project "neither endorses nor prohibits" these tools, treating AI-generated submissions under the same rigorous standards applied to traditional human-written code.

Under the newly established rules, contributors are not required to disclose whether they used artificial intelligence to write their code, though the project encourages them to do so. However, the lack of a disclosure mandate does not absolve developers of accountability. Debian emphasizes that contributors remain fully responsible for the quality, correctness, maintainability, and legal compliance of their submissions. The policy explicitly warns against blindly uploading AI-generated material without thorough human review and testing, noting that doing so violates established development practices.

The decision highlights a growing divide within the open-source community regarding the role of automated coding assistants. While some developers welcomed the policy as a pragmatic way to boost productivity, others expressed strong opposition. At least one contributor announced they are leaving the project entirely due to the decision. This friction mirrors previous pushback faced by Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu, which encountered similar community resistance over its own AI policies. Nevertheless, prominent figures like Linux creator Linus Torvalds have signaled support for the technology, previously stating that Linux is "not one of those anti-AI projects."
