AMD MI430X GPUs to Power €387.8M LUMI-AI Supercomputer

The EuroHPC Joint Undertaking has signed a €387.8 million contract for the LUMI-AI supercomputer, leveraging AMD hardware to drastically scale up Europe's sovereign AI capabilities.

The EuroHPC Joint Undertaking signed a €387.8 million procurement contract with French vendor Bull to deliver the LUMI-AI supercomputer. Scheduled for deployment in the second half of 2027 at CSC's data center in Kajaani, Finland, the system will be powered by AMD Instinct MI430X GPUs and 6th Gen AMD EPYC 256-core processors. Funding is split equally between the EuroHPC JU, via the EU's Digital Europe Programme, and the LUMI AI Factory consortium comprising Finland, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Norway, and Poland.

LUMI-AI is designed to deliver ten times the AI capacity and nearly double the high-performance computing capability of the existing LUMI system. Built on Bull's liquid-cooled BullSequana XH3500 architecture, the supercomputer integrates IBM Storage Scale and Nokia networking alongside Bull's BXI interconnect. The AMD Instinct MI430X GPUs offer up to 288 TFLOPs of peak theoretical FP64 performance, 9.2 PFLOPs of peak theoretical FP4 performance, and 432 GB of HBM4 memory with 23.3 TB/s of bandwidth. The system will also integrate with LUMI-IQ, a quantum computer from IQM Quantum Computers, to enable hybrid workflows.

For AI practitioners and researchers, this deployment represents a massive leap in accessible, sovereign compute power within Europe. The MI430X's support for the open ROCm software platform ensures that developers can easily run, train, and fine-tune large-scale models without proprietary software lock-in. Startups and small-to-medium enterprises will gain unprecedented access to high-bandwidth, low-latency infrastructure capable of handling massive, dynamic, and confidential datasets.
