Nvidia Acquires Hugging Face for $12.9 Billion

Nvidia has reached an agreement to acquire Hugging Face, the popular open-source artificial intelligence platform, in a transaction valued at $12.9 billion. The acquisition represents Nvidia's second-largest deal to date, trailing only its $20 billion purchase of Groq assets in December. Through this acquisition, the chipmaker aims to extend its footprint deeper into AI software and developer tools, moving beyond the graphics processing units that have fueled its massive market dominance.

According to Hugging Face chief executive officer Clément Delangue, he initiated contact with Nvidia over the summer to secure the additional funding, scale, and operational support required to sustain the platform's rapid growth. Nvidia chief executive officer Jensen Huang confirmed that Hugging Face will remain open to the broader AI community. Nvidia intends to inject more funding into the platform, upgrade its underlying infrastructure, and assist a wider range of developers and organizations in adopting its tools.

The acquisition follows a recent cyberattack on Hugging Face. Delangue noted that the security incident highlighted the critical importance of open-source AI, while Huang suggested that open models enable security teams to collaborate more effectively to defend against digital threats. For AI practitioners, this deal ensures that Hugging Face's vast repository of models and datasets will benefit from Nvidia's robust infrastructure and financial backing, potentially accelerating model training and deployment pipelines while preserving the open-source ecosystem they rely on daily.
