Microsoft unveils a redesigned Copilot super app

Microsoft has officially launched its revamped Copilot application, structuring the interface around three primary tabs: Home, Code, and Autopilot. The Home tab serves as the central hub, merging Copilot Chat and Cowork while introducing a "Today" dashboard to track emails, meetings, and Teams threads. The Code tab, powered by the same technology behind GitHub Copilot, operates in a secure sandbox, allowing employees to build and share internal applications, trackers, and automations.

The third tab, Autopilot, is a cloud-based rebranding of the company's Scout assistant. Operating on its own cloud computer instance, Autopilot functions as an autonomous digital teammate that runs continuously, even when the user is offline. It integrates directly into Teams, Outlook, and shared documents, utilizing Microsoft IQ to understand organizational workflows. To support these agentic capabilities and handle models like Astra and Fable, Microsoft is introducing usage-based billing for the Cowork, Code, and Autopilot features, while standard tasks remain covered under the traditional user subscription license.

For IT administrators and developers, this shift introduces both new capabilities and management requirements. Administrators will need to employ Microsoft's new FinOps for AI tool to monitor and control usage-based expenditures. The Home and Code tabs will debut in the Frontier early-access program in the coming weeks, with Autopilot entering private preview later this month. Additionally, the Code tab will reach preview for Microsoft 365 Premium and Pro subscribers later this year. This consolidation represents Microsoft's bid to turn Copilot into what CEO Satya Nadella calls "a new OS for work," shifting the tool from a simple chatbot to a comprehensive enterprise infrastructure.
