Mistral AI raises €3B to scale sovereign open-weight models

Mistral AI announced it has secured €3 billion in Series D funding, pushing its post-money valuation past €21 billion. This represents the largest equity fundraising round in the history of European technology companies, coming just three years after the firm's launch. Samsung Electronics led the round, alongside co-leads Scaleup Europe Fund, which is managed by EQT, and existing investor PSG Equity. New backers like Advent, BlackRock, and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg joined existing investors including Andreessen Horowitz, NVIDIA, and Salesforce Ventures.

The capital injection will be used to scale Mistral's compute capacity for training powerful models, expand its infrastructure, and accelerate its global commercial footprint. Currently, the company operates across 20 countries and supports more than 125 global enterprises, including Airbus, ASML, and HSBC. This round follows a Series C funding round that was previously led by ASML.

For AI practitioners and enterprise developers, Mistral's massive funding signals a robust alternative to proprietary, closed-source AI ecosystems. The company is focusing on what it calls "sovereign, open-weight AI," which allows organizations to deploy state-of-the-art models without surrendering control of their data or infrastructure. By offering a full stack that includes open-weight models, private compute, and production products, Mistral aims to prevent vendor lock-in regarding pricing, roadmaps, and availability.

This approach enables developers to customize and audit models within their own private boundaries. Practitioners can run these systems locally or in predictable, private compute environments, ensuring that sensitive institutional knowledge and workflows are never exposed to external vendors. With backing from major industrial and hardware giants, Mistral is positioning its open-weight stack to handle mission-critical deployments in highly regulated and complex real-world environments.
