OpenAI Pauses $200 Pro Plan Due to High Astra Demand

OpenAI has temporarily suspended new subscriptions for its high-end Pro membership tier, which costs $200 per month. The decision comes in response to an overwhelming surge in demand for Astra, the company's latest and most advanced artificial intelligence model. Thibault Sottiaux, OpenAI's product leader for core offerings like Codex and ChatGPT, announced the pause on social media, explaining that the Pro tier places the heaviest burden on the company's computing infrastructure.

According to Sottiaux, halting Pro sign-ups represents the "smallest step" the company could take to preserve system stability while ensuring the widest possible access to its services. While the $200 tier is temporarily locked to new users, other options remain unaffected. Developers and consumers can still access OpenAI's services through its API, as well as its lower-cost Go and Plus subscription plans. Enterprise and Business accounts also remain active.

Astra launched on September 3 and has been progressively rolling out across OpenAI's various service tiers. The model is designed to deliver significant advancements in complex reasoning, coding, and computer-use capabilities. OpenAI has positioned Astra as a generational breakthrough, even framing its release as the dawn of the artificial general intelligence era. This positioning has fueled massive interest, creating a level of demand that Sottiaux described as entirely unprecedented, even compared to the company's previous periods of rapid growth.

For AI practitioners and developers, this suspension highlights the physical infrastructure bottlenecks currently limiting state-of-the-art model deployment. Those who did not secure a Pro subscription before the freeze will have to rely on the API or lower-tier plans to test Astra's capabilities. The infrastructure strain appears to have escalated quickly, especially considering that OpenAI had increased usage limits for Codex users just last month. The company has not yet provided a timeline for when Pro subscriptions will reopen.
