SpaceX builds Texas foundry to bypass gas turbine shortage
SpaceX is building a specialized foundry in Texas to manufacture critical gas turbine parts, aiming to bypass energy bottlenecks for AI data centers despite rising pollution concerns.

Elon Musk has confirmed that SpaceX is building a specialized foundry on roughly 830 acres of land acquired between March and June near its Starlink facility in Bastrop, Texas. The site will manufacture the complex blades and vanes required for natural gas turbines. Musk stated that casting these components in-house could accelerate the deployment of new natural gas turbines by up to 18 months. This initiative directly addresses a severe bottleneck in AI infrastructure, as turbine manufacturer GE Vernova is already sold out of production capacity through 2030.
For AI practitioners, securing reliable power has become a constraint on par with acquiring advanced hardware like Nvidia's Blackwell GPUs. The International Energy Agency projects that global data center electricity consumption will roughly double by 2030. To bypass backlogged utility grids, hyperscalers including Amazon, Google, Meta, OpenAI, and Microsoft are building private, gas-fired plants. However, turbine manufacturing is limited by the extreme difficulty of casting blades that can survive temperatures of 3,000 to 3,600 degrees Fahrenheit—roughly 800 degrees hotter than the melting point of the metal alloy itself. Only four companies globally currently master this vacuum-furnace casting process.
By breaking into this tight manufacturing oligopoly, SpaceX could grant Musk-controlled AI ventures a massive operational advantage. While SpaceX and Tesla are also building 100 gigawatts per year of solar production capacity, Musk noted that natural gas is still required to supplement solar energy for several years. However, this transition carries severe environmental costs. In Memphis, where SpaceXAI has run gas turbines for its Colossus data centers since 2024, local advocates have accused the firm of operating without necessary permits. Furthermore, a study in Virginia's Data Center Alley estimated that emissions from just eight gas turbines could affect 2.5 million people, causing 3.4 to 6.5 premature deaths annually and between $53 million and $99 million in health-related damages.
