Shopify lets browser-based AI agents complete checkouts
Shopify has enabled browser-based AI agents to complete purchases on its merchants' sites, paving the way for fully automated shopping experiences that bypass traditional web scraping.

E-commerce giant Shopify has expanded its support for agentic commerce by allowing browser-based AI agents to complete checkout transactions on merchant websites. Announced by Gil Greenberg, a staff product manager at Shopify, the update integrates WebMCP support into the checkout process, including Shop Pay. This allows AI assistants to finalize purchases with user authorization, moving beyond basic product search and cart-building capabilities.
To facilitate this, Shopify introduced three new API tools: get_checkout, update_checkout, and complete_checkout. These tools allow browser-based agents to inspect a checkout, modify details like shipping addresses or delivery options, and submit the order. Instead of relying on fragile web scraping or visual screenshots, agents can now interact directly with structured data. Greenberg noted on X that these tools let agents avoid navigating "HTML built for humans" by utilizing structured APIs.
The system relies on Shopify's Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), which standardizes product discovery, cart management, and checkout operations. While Shopify already offers a hosted Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for server-to-server agent operations, the WebMCP standard is tailored specifically for agents operating directly within a buyer's browser. Leading AI agent developers like Muse and Instinct have already established direct partnerships with Shopify to leverage this technology, with the Instinct partnership launching alongside the announcement.
This move positions Shopify in stark contrast to other e-commerce giants like Amazon, which have actively blocked automated agents from purchasing on their platforms. For developers and retailers, Shopify's open approach simplifies the creation of shopping assistants. By providing native, secure endpoints for transaction completion, the platform reduces the friction of automated purchasing while ensuring that required disclosures and merchant handoffs remain compliant and accurate.
