Stripe buys AI routing startup OpenRouter for $7.5 billion
Stripe is acquiring AI gateway startup OpenRouter for a reported $7.5 billion, marking a major push into AI token expense management and developer infrastructure.

Stripe has confirmed its acquisition of OpenRouter, an AI model routing startup, for a reported $7.5 billion. This price represents a massive premium over OpenRouter's $1.3 billion valuation in May. Under the terms of the deal, which saw Stripe outbid competitors like Databricks, OpenRouter's founders will reportedly receive $1.5 billion, while investors will take home the remaining $6 billion. OpenRouter is expected to continue operating independently after the transaction closes in a few weeks.
In a leaked letter to investors, Stripe founders Patrick and John Collison jokingly attributed the acquisition to the "singularity" starting on January 1. More practically, the purchase deepens Stripe's integration with the AI economy. Currently, 88% of the Forbes AI 50, including major labs like OpenAI and Anthropic, use Stripe's payment services, as do 100% of Brex's fastest-growing startups.
This acquisition marks a pivot for Stripe from revenue collection to expense management, specifically targeting AI token costs. Stripe joins other tech firms entering this space, such as Databricks with its AI gateway, and Ramp and Rippling with their respective AI spend management tools. PitchBook analyst Franco Granda noted that the deal represents a "deliberate attempt to embed itself into the middle of capital flows in the AI era," giving Stripe leverage over frontier labs, hyperscalers, and neoclouds.
For developers and AI practitioners, the acquisition promises a more unified ecosystem where model routing and API cost management are tightly integrated. OpenRouter's platform allows developers to easily switch between different LLMs to optimize performance and cost. With Stripe's backing, developers can expect more robust tools to track, manage, and optimize their token expenses directly within their existing payment and financial workflows, making it easier to scale agentic workflows without losing control of API budgets.
