Pentagon Adds ChatGPT and Grok to Military AI Platform
The US Department of Defense has expanded its GenAI.mil platform by integrating OpenAI's ChatGPT Mil and xAI's Grok for Government, giving millions of military personnel secure AI tools.

The United States Department of Defense has expanded its internal artificial intelligence capabilities by adding OpenAI's ChatGPT Mil and xAI's Grok for Government to its official platform, GenAI.mil. Prior to this integration, Google Gemini was the sole model available on the platform since its initial launch in December. This expansion significantly broadens the generative AI options available to the military's massive workforce.
The Pentagon reports that GenAI.mil currently serves more than 1.7 million active users out of its total pool of over three million employees and military personnel. The two new models are designated for distinct operational roles. ChatGPT Mil will primarily assist personnel with administrative tasks, logistics, and strategic planning. Meanwhile, the military is positioning Grok for Government to handle procurement analysis and supply chain management.
For practitioners operating within the defense sector, security remains the paramount concern. Both ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government run within a dedicated, highly secure environment that is completely isolated from their commercial counterparts. This air-gapped setup ensures that sensitive government data cannot leak into public training sets, and the platform does not collect any user data. This allows military personnel to leverage advanced LLMs for daily workflows without compromising national security protocols.
Notably absent from the updated platform is Anthropic's Claude. The model remains unavailable because Anthropic declined to grant the Pentagon unrestricted use of its technology. Consequently, the Trump administration classified the company as a supply chain risk, though a federal court ruled that classification unlawful in late August. For now, defense practitioners must rely on the newly expanded suite of Gemini, ChatGPT, and Grok.
