Google Fitbit Air Leads Shift to Screen-Free Wearables
As consumers face digital burnout, hardware makers are launching screen-free devices like the Google Fitbit Air to shift health tracking and AI-driven insights entirely to smartphones.

A new wave of screen-free wearables is hitting the market, led by devices like the Google Fitbit Air, Garmin Cirqa, Polar Loop, and Amazfit Helio Strap. These display-free trackers represent a design subtraction, stripping away screens to combat digital fatigue and constant notifications. Even Apple is reportedly considering its own version of a screenless tracker, following the path forged by Whoop, which pioneered the category back in 2015.
Rather than displaying real-time alerts, these devices offload data analysis to smartphone apps, where artificial intelligence translates raw metrics. For example, the Google Fitbit Air provides basic charts for free, but requires a Google Health Premium subscription costing $10 a month to unlock AI-generated narrative explanations of health data. Similarly, Whoop has pivoted from targeting elite athletes to a broader audience, charging a $199 annual subscription to help users manage sleep and recovery.
For developers and health tech practitioners, this shift moves the user interface challenge from hardware displays to mobile AI software. Instead of designing micro-interactions for wrists, engineers must build sophisticated models to interpret complex biometrics like heart-rate variability and VO2 Max. Peter Richardson, cofounder of Counterpoint Research, notes that AI-guided wellness is in its early stages but will advance significantly. This transition helps mitigate what University of Nottingham researcher Elizabeth Marsh identifies as technostress and information overload caused by constant digital interruptions. By removing the screen, these devices allow users to collect continuous health data, like the Garmin Cirqa's automatic workout mapping, without the anxiety of persistent wrist notifications.
