Anthropic and Gates Foundation Launch $200M AI Initiative

Anthropic is teaming up with the Gates Foundation in a $200 million, four-year alliance to apply its Claude artificial intelligence model to critical global challenges. Led by Anthropic's Beneficial Deployments team, the initiative will provide grant funding, Claude usage credits, and technical support. The primary focus is improving healthcare in low- and middle-income countries, where roughly 4.6 billion people lack essential medical services. Researchers will use Claude to accelerate vaccine and therapy development for neglected diseases like polio, HPV—which causes about 350,000 annual deaths, 90 percent of them in developing nations—and preeclampsia. The partnership will also integrate Claude with the Institute for Disease Modeling to make malaria and tuberculosis forecasts more accessible.

Beyond healthcare, the collaboration targets education and agriculture. In the US, sub-Saharan Africa, and India, the partners are co-developing tools to improve K-12 math tutoring, literacy, and career guidance. For the nearly two billion people relying on smallholder farming, Anthropic will build agriculture-specific datasets and benchmarks to optimize Claude for local crop management. In the US, the program will focus on portable skills records and tracking employment outcomes. For developers and researchers, Anthropic plans to build specialized connectors, benchmarks, and evaluation frameworks, allowing practitioners to measure how Claude performs on complex healthcare and agricultural tasks.

Alongside the foundation partnership, Anthropic is launching several immediate programs for the scientific community. The company is opening a research preview of its Model Hardware Standard, a specification designed to let AI agents safely control physical devices. Additionally, Anthropic is offering free Claude access to 10,000 scientists worldwide. Under this program, verified principal investigators can access a Claude Team subscription and add team members to Standard seats for free, or Premium seats for $15 per month, for up to one year. Finally, Anthropic is establishing a $5 million grant program to fund independent research into how AI technologies affect human well-being.
