Paris-based generative AI developer Mistral AI has secured $3.5 billion in a Series D funding round, pushing its valuation to more than $24 billion. Samsung Electronics led the massive investment, with co-leadership from the Scaleup Europe Fund, managed by EQT, and existing investor PSG Equity. This funding comes exactly one year after the startup's $2 billion Series C round, which valued the firm at $13.7 billion. Since its inception in 2023, Mistral has now raised a total of $7.5 billion.

The deal solidifies Mistral's status as the most valuable foundation model developer in Europe. Globally, it joins a select group of seven private frontier labs valued over $20 billion, or eight if including China's ByteDance, with the remainder located in the United States and China. Mistral plans to use the capital to expand its frontier research, build out infrastructure, and accelerate its commercial growth. The startup currently operates in 20 countries and serves over 125 enterprise clients, including Airbus, ASML, BMW, and HSBC.

For enterprise AI practitioners, Mistral's massive war chest ensures a viable, independent alternative to U.S. giants like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. Unlike these competitors, Mistral focuses on giving businesses greater control by allowing them to customize and run models on their own local systems rather than relying solely on third-party cloud providers. This approach is highly appealing to developers and IT architects managing strict data sovereignty, privacy, and custom integration requirements.

The transaction also highlights a major resurgence in European venture capital. In the second quarter, European startups raised $24 billion, marking the region's strongest funding quarter in four years. This total represents a one-third increase quarter-over-quarter and is two-thirds higher than the $14.4 billion raised in Q2 2025. Other notable European AI deals this year include London-based Isomorphic Labs raising a $2.1 billion Series B led by Thrive Capital, and AI data center provider Nscale securing a $2 billion Series C at a $14.6 billion valuation, co-led by 8090 Industries and Aker.
